President’s Message:
Several years ago, while barging with friends in France,
Lynda and I came across two barges of Danish men who were
also barging in the Alsace-Loraine region. All sixteen of them
were sans wives (which apparently is a Danish custom – sep-
arate vacations). They were a jolly group and our paths often crossed for a
few days. Each time we met or separated they would all burst into song:
“Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And never brought to mind? NOT!”
We will certainly never forget them or their Scottish ditty.
Nor will I ever forget my second term as President of Newcomers’. It
has been an opportunity to renew old acquaintances and make new ones.
Along the way, we have had great times and some not so great times but, all
in all, we created memories that will not be forgotten. I believe we accom-
plished our goal of bringing new life to the Club by encouraging our new
members to help carry the burden of Club operations by implementing the
plethora of activities we all seek and enjoy.
My heartfelt thanks go to an Executive Committee that has endured trials
and tribulations but nonetheless has contributed superbly to a successful
year. My special thanks go to four people who saved us. Carol Cook and
Gail Senteny stepped in and did not miss a beat when their successors were
unable to assume their duties due to illness and/or family necessities (First
Vice President Pat England returned to her tasks belatedly and Second Vice
President – well, not so much). And my Plan B Angels, Edwina Rosenbusch
and Lynda Fletcher, jumped into the breach and arranged for our luncheon
venues for the balance of the year when it became apparent that the Second
Vice President slot would remain vacant.
The General Board has also done a magnificent job and I thank you all for
your dedication to the Club. Without fail each of you performed your as-
signed tasks and more. The Club is indebted to you for your service. Many
of you have signed on for another term, for which I am sure Hank Merrill is
grateful.
All that said, it seems appropriate to announce your new executive offic-
ers for the year 2015-16. After a hard fought campaign the following were
elected. President: Hank Merrill, First Vice President: Karen Jurgens, Sec-
ond Vice President: Don Bonnema, Secretary: Pete Harmon, and Treasur-
er: Becky Bock. We wish them well in their new endeavors.

A MESSAGE FROM JUDY & JOE WINKLER
Dear Newcomer Friends,
After much thought, Joe and I have decided not to renew our member-
ship this year.
We have loved our associations and activities with Newcomers but
since we are now frequently at our home in St. George, we are finding
that our time here does not coincide with the activities we enjoy with
all of you.
If our situation changes in the future, we would like nothing better than
to rejoin. For those of you who would like to stay in touch with us,
our new contact information is as follows:
Salt Lake Address: Stays the same
Sun River St. George address: 1705 Morane Manor
St. George Utah 84790
Joe: [email protected] Phone (801) 462-5248
Judy: [email protected] Phone (801) 209-8405
Best Regards to all,
Joe and Judy Winkler
Mary Leaper had reverse shoulder replacement surgery on Feb. 13. She’s doing well and continued physi-
cal therapy is helping bring her back to normal. Mary would like to say, “Every good wish was a step toward
healing so thank you for that big push.” Calls and cards are welcome.
Pam Toth had shoulder surgery in February and is almost fully recovered. We hope to see Pam back at all her activities soon. Cards and calls would speed her on her way.
Congratulations to Phyllis McGuirk, our newest US citizen. A lot of hard work and dedication got you to
your goal. Welcome to the family!
John Hammel died the evening of March 22 due to heart failure complicated by pneumonia. Many of you
know that John and Gail had been active in the Gourmet group since its inception more than 15 years
ago. John was active in the planning and execution of our Thai meal in February. Our condolences go out to
Gail at this difficult time.

you! In Gourmet, groups of people come together once a month – usually on the first Saturday - to share a good
meal. As a participant of Gourmet you can expect to be a host home (for 8 or more people) at least one time
from September through June. Each month hosts get together to plan a meal. The host prepares the entrée and
individuals attending the dinner bring a menu item and their own beverage. Next Gourmet is Saturday, May
2 at 6:30 pm. RSVP no later than April 15. Contact Jody for more details.

Join us in May for a guided tour at the BYU MUSEUM OF ART. There are three
special exhibits: 1) Gabriel Dawe’s stunning Plexus no. 29. The two translucent
structures filtering through the Museum’s skylight appear to be luminous rays of
light refracted through a giant prism. The artist used a custom-made 15 foot tall needle to weave nearly 80
miles of thread in the creation on these site-specific architectural forms. 2) The infinite possibilities of Origa-
mi is a ground breaking exhibition that explores the evolution of Origami. 3) Art Deco Japan: Shaping Art
and Culture 1920-1945. Then we will tour their permanent American Art Collection. We will have lunch at
the Museum Café.
After lunch we can go through the newly renovated Life Science Museum if anyone is interested.
