VOCATIONAL education and training (VET) inMelton has the lowest enrolment rate in the westernmetropolitan region, new figures reveal.

Figures from a state government report released lastweek show only 1800 Melton residents were enrolled inVET in 2012 — behind 16,000 in Maribyrnong, 14,200in Brimbank, 8700 in Wyndham, 6900 in Hobsons Bayand 5800 in Moonee Valley.

Moorabool had 700 enrolments, an increase of 6 percent and the third-highest increase in the Central High-lands region. Moorabool also recorded a 38 per centincrease in course providers, with 18 in 2012.

The rate of enrolment in Melton increased 17 percent. There were 35 VET providers, an increase of59 per cent.

Brimbank/Melton Local Learning and EmploymentNetwork executive officer Graeme Brown saidenrolments across seven Melton schools that make up a‘VET cluster’ dropped 14 per cent in 2012.

‘‘Given that VET in schools is in decline, it’s a surprisethat generally there is an increase across all age groups,’’he said. ‘‘More mature people might be doing trainingand probably people doing re-training because of beingretrenched.’’

One of the key challenges recognised in the reportwas that a majority of Melton residents were enrollingwith training providers outside the area.

Mr Brown said an increase in private VET providersin other western metropolitan areas could be a factor.

‘‘Most of the training providers are located morecentrally in the inner-suburban areas. There’s been anincrease in the number of the registered trainingproviders. It’s really to do with that access and wherethe registered training organisation is located.’’

Mr Brown said more local providers would be benefi-cial because they often delivered a specific range ofcourses. ‘‘The more providers there is, the better thescope to access different types of training.’’

Customised Training Bacchus Marsh business devel-opment manager Cliff Rundle said while the figureswere a healthy sign for industry, a shortage of local con-struction jobs meant people should consider enhancingtheir resume with new skills. ‘‘My advice would be toskill up in the downtime. Industries have booms andbusts so an extra qualification will make you moreemployable.’’ — With Ben Cameron

‘Bit of paint’ would save churchBY BEN CAMERON

Up for grabs: St Patricks in Elaine is to be sold.Picture: Kate Healy, Ballarat Courier

AN Elaine resident has accused the CatholicChurch of ‘‘lies and spin’’ over the closure andsale of St Patricks church.

Parishioner Shane Dunne said he wasappalled the community was not given the rightof appeal after a recent newsletter told them thechurch was to be sold next month.

He described the stance of the Archdiocese ofMelbourne – which said the decision followedextensive community consultation, expertbuilding assessment and demographic predic-tions – as nothing more than ‘‘spin and lies’’.

‘‘Our church administrator Father [Licayan]Herman told me he was more than willing toopen up the church and see if there was interestin the church proceeding,’’ Mr Dunne said.

‘‘I have the support of 27 people who wantthe church to be left open. Father Hermanconsulted the parish council, but they didn’twant to hear about it.’’

Mr Dunne said claims the church was in poorcondition were overblown and he was preparedto maintain it out of his own pocket.

‘‘There’s nothing wrong with it. All it needs isa bit of paint. We want the opportunity toappeal this decision. We don’t want the churchgoing out on a bad note.’’

Monsignor Greg Bennett said the churchwould be sold on the condition it was not for‘‘profane use’’. ‘‘While these decisions can bepainful for the community involved, every efforthas been made to consult extensively . . . and thedecisions made are in the parish’s bestinterests.’’

Cash flows, but damage doneBY BENJAMIN MILLAR

NEW funding to support “innovation and struc-tural reform” in the TAFE system is too little toolate for Victoria University, according to critics.

The Australian Education Union last weekwarned that the state government’s promise of$50 million a year over the next four years wouldfail to undo the damage already inflicted at VUTAFE.

But VU hopes that part of the $200 millionfunding boost to TAFEs will be spread across its11 campuses, including Melton.

Deputy vice-chancellor Anne Jones said VUwelcomed the funding.

‘‘The west of Melbourne needs some of thatfunding to adjust to changes resulting from theloss of TAFE funding. We are also looking forsupport to further develop our plan for a nation-ally significant trades academy in Melbourne.’’

Higher Education and Skills Minister PeterHall said government changes to funding meantmore students were enrolling in vocationaleducation and training.

“There are now 670,438 government-fundedenrolments across Victoria, compared to426,905 in 2010,” he said.

AEU vice-president Greg Barclay said a Vic-torian TAFE Association report showed coursesincluding sport and fitness, hospitality, business,

tourism and boat building had been cut due to a$32 million shortfall for VU TAFE out of morethan $300 million statewide.

Friends of VU spokesman Paul Adams castdoubts on whether the institution would receiveany of the new funding. He said he believed themoney would be used for restructuring andchanges needed for regional universities.

‘‘To get back to where it was, VU would need50 per cent of the funding on offer over the nextthree years, which just isn’t realistic,’’ he said.

‘‘The way I would interpret this move is thatit’s recognition the state government reallystuffed up.’’

Home care benefitsfrom cash injectionBY STEPHANIE ZEVENBERGENand BEN CAMERON

ELDERLY and disabled residents in Melton andMoorabool will have a better chance of livingindependently after the state government tippedmore money into home and community care(HACC) programs.

Kurunjang resident Leo Johnson, 71, who wasdiagnosed with a brain tumour 12 months ago, said he wouldn’t be living at home if it wasn’t forHACC. About three months ago, Djerriwarrhhad handrails installed throughout his home tolessen his chance of having a fall.

‘‘It’s been very beneficial for me because I havean illness that means I have to have a bit of assist-ance showering and things like that,’’ MrJohnson said. ‘‘They’ve given me rails for thetoilet and shower and an external door so I canget in and out much easier. It’s certainly been abig help because if I had a fall my wife wouldn’tbe able to pick me up.’’

While Apple FM is lending its voice in supportof 37 community digital stations facing an uncer-tain future, breakfast announcer Mark Philip

said he did not expect FM services would eventu-ally be shut down.

‘‘There’s been no flagging of it from thegovernment. I don’t think they’ll scrap AM orFM,’’ he said.

‘‘To go digital costs a lot of money for newequipment and licensing; it would be a complete

He said Apple FM stayed afloat thanks tocommunity support, sponsorship and govern-ment grants.

The giant task of harvesting 100 tonnes of red wine grapes began in Melton

last week. Witchmount Winery enlisted the help of a machine harvester that

can pick six tonnes of grapes in an hour. Witchmount’s Steve Goodwin

(pictured), a winemaker for 30 years, says it’s the right time to pick grapes

for the winery’s shiraz. ‘‘The most important decision a winemaker makes is

when to pick the grapes. You have to be bang-on in terms of sugar level,

acidity level and, most important of all, flavour. The thing about having a

mechanical harvester is that you can do the harvesting at night rather than

early in the morning.’’ Harvesting will be finished by mid-April. The grapes

will eventually fill an estimated 100,000 bottles of wine.

Visit the Granular Products team, at site E20, Farm World 21-24thMarch, photos, information and reseller locations will be available to help manage Serrated Tussock and pasture productivity. GP FLUPROPANATE is available in 750 gram Shakers, that can be stored behind the seat, in the toolbox or on the quad-bike. Th e re-sealable and re-useable 15kg bucket is for larger applications or for re-fi lling the Shakers.

Unlike liquid applications, the granules are spread dry and therefore provide many applicator benefi ts. A low application rate of

1.5g /m2 or approximately a fl at teaspoon/ m2 (equivalent to 15kg/ Ha or 6kg/ ac), makes hard to access areas far easier to treat, than lugging long spray hoses or heavy backpacks to and fro.

GP FLUPROPANATE was originally developed for aerial application and targeting weeds under tree canopies. Other benefi ts are that there is Zero drift and that aerial application costs are signifi cantly reduced. GP FLUPROPANATE can improve pasture production through selectivity and residual control of Serrated tussock and allow other benefi cial pasture species to thrive, during the2 – 3 year residual window.

Meals on wheels: Edward Groot is launching a mobile soup kitchen. Picture: Paul Rovere

WE’VE all heard of Meals on Wheels, but aBacchus Marsh community group is planningto take food service to a whole new level.

The Marsh Food Bus organisers plan toestablish a mobile soup kitchen to feed thearea’s homeless. It be will at MooraboolCouncil offices by day and parked in a centrallocation a couple of nights a week to feed peo-ple in need.

Bus staffer Edward Groot said he feltcompelled to help after reading reports aboutthe growing problem of homelessness in Bac-chus Marsh.

‘‘Homelessness is apparently a big problem, not only in Bacchus Marsh,’’ he said.

‘‘We can’t give them a roof over their head, but we can at least try to give them a feed andlet their children go to bed without hunger.

‘‘There has been a soup bus operating verysuccessfully in Ballarat for the past three years. . . so hopefully we can do the same in theMarsh. I am sure, together, we can achieve it.’’

Mr Groot has five helpers on his books, butis looking to recruit an army of 100 volun-teers, who need only donate their time once amonth for a few hours.

‘‘So far the volunteer list is promising, butwe still need quite a bit more.’’

Mr Groot is also seeking a qualified electri-cian to help out, but donations of items suchas a stove or oven, hot water service, grey-

water tank, water pump, bar fridge or freezerand a rangehood to complete a fitout of thekitchen are also needed.

‘Of no fixed address’HOMELESSNESS is a hidden issue in the area, says aMoorabool councillor.

Moorabool Council does not keep records ofhomelessness. The previous Census revealed that 321people were homeless in the Bacchus Marsh and Mel-ton area. They included 48 people living in caravanparks and 91 in accommodation especially tailoredfor the homeless. Almost 150 were living in ‘‘severelycrowded dwellings’’ on Census night 2011.

Cr Tonia Dudzik says those statistics aren’t acomplete indicator of homelessness in the area.

‘‘Homelessness is a hidden issue,’’ she said.‘‘There is a culture of couch-surfing that many teen-

age homeless are caught up in. Only last week I heardabout a 17-year-old girl with a baby who is homelessin Bacchus Marsh.’’

Census stats showed 66 people were ‘‘stayingtemporarily with other households’’.

Cr Dudzik said churches, organisations like TheNeighbours Place and council’s community andfamily services provided valuable assistance to thosein need.

No green light for Barkstead road upgradeMOORABOOL Council has no plans to upgraderoads in the Barkstead area, despite residentscalling for action to address safety concerns.

The Weekly reported last month that residentspresented a petition to council demandingimprovements to the condition of the main road

into Barkstead. Maintenance work, includingsealing potholes, was carried out after thepetition was lodged and a council report said ‘‘noadditional works’’ were warranted.

Resident Michael Coll questioned council’sestimations that traffic volumes were very low.

‘‘The report . . . does not provide the dates ofthe study,’’ he said.

‘‘Traffic volumes in and around Barksteadhave increased considerably in the past fewyears.’’

The report found only one recorded casualty in

25 years, in 2011 when a vehicle ran off Bark-stead Road. The road was not considered afactor in the accident. ‘‘The roads in and aroundBarkstead are not considered to be less safe thanthe vast majority of roads in the shire,’’ it said.

COVERSTORY

Stuart Law was working at the desk of his Point Cook home when the wallaby bounded past the desk and down the tiled hall.

“It was surreal. I just sat there for a second and thought, did I just see that?” he said.

“Then I heard it. It had run into the laundry and was frantically trying to get out.”

Shutting the door to contain the stressed animal, Law rang a vet and then, on their advice, Wildlife Victoria. Within 15 minutes two experienced rescuers were on the doorstep.

“They gave it a tranquilliser because it was very, very stressed,” Law says. “They waited for it to calm, bagged it and took it away.”

The animal was released unharmed back into the bush, but rescuer Kym O’Connor was not so lucky. She suffered a deep gash to her thigh where the frightened, scrabbling animal had

ripped through her jeans. And it wasn’t the fi rst time; cuts and scrapes are among the hazards of macropod rescues. “Their claws can rip through anything,” O’Connor says.

The Point Cook rescue was just one in a busy day of wildlife rescues. On that day, Wildlife Victoria received almost 300 calls to attend distressed, disorientated and injured fauna. Increasingly displaced by the city’s sprawl, the native wildlife is tearing at suburbia, trying to fi nd sanctuary.

“People are always surprised to hear the majority of our calls come from suburban Melbourne,” Wildlife Victoria relationship manager Amy Amato says.

In past year, Wildlife Victoria received more than 3500 calls to help injured native birds, mammals and reptiles across Melbourne’s west and north-western suburbs.

The eastern grey kangaroo accounted for almost half of the 744 incidents in Macedon Ranges and also dominated callouts in Brimbank, Hume, Melton and Moorabool. Ringtail possums topped the list of animals requiring rescue in Moonee Valley, Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay.

Creatures great and small were hit by vehicles, chased by dogs, attacked by cats, became entangled in fences, were trapped in buildings, or were the victims of deliberate cruelty by people.

“It is happening more and more,” Amato says of the grim toll. ‘‘We have a darter, someone who actually tranquillisers the ’roos, and we have doubled the amount of callouts to him because

Clockwise from above: An orphaned baby possum is raised at an animal shelter; Kym O’Connor with a wayward black swan; a young female swamp wallaby is held at Collingwood police station; kangaroos graze at Atwood, near Melbourne Airport.

it’s just crazy out there. We think it has to do with the development that is going on around the fringe and the lack of planning. The habitat is just getting decimated.

“The developers have no plans for wildlife corridors for these animals to be able to move through into areas where they are safer, so they get pushed out on to roads and then they get disoriented and move closer and closer into town.”

Just how much wildlife exists in long-established inner urban areas is underscored by Wildlife Victoria statistics which show more rescues in Moonee Valley than in rapidly growing Melton and Moorabool local government areas combined.

Moonee Valley council is among the most proactive environmentally. It has created more than 30 hectares for conservation in the past four years.

It is home to more than 100 fauna species and 170 native fl ora species. These range from the nationally signifi cant powerful owl and the grey-headed fl ying fox to the iconic platypus in the Maribyrnong and swamp wallabies on the river fl ats as close to the city as Essendon.

Within the next month, the council is due to turn the fi rst sod on a $460,000 project to restore the natural stormwater course – sent underground in the concrete craze of the 1960s – through the river red gums in Napier Park.

One of only two stands of river red gums surviving in Melbourne, the Napier Park trees and the associated grassy woodlands foster an entire ecosystem, from the microbats, possums, cockatoos and lorikeets to the lizards and insects living in the leaf litter.

Council environment co-ordinator Sheridan Blunt says scarcely 20 per cent of the mammals that existed at the time of European settlement survive in the inner suburbs.

She says biodiversity is gradually increasing as environmental awareness grows.

“It has been very interesting how you manage a natural environment in a non-natural situation and that is the essence of urban ecology I guess,” she says.

“The more obvious biodiversity is still out in our rural areas, but to be honest that is being changed so rapidly through urbanisation, and also through farming techniques, that some of these species are fi nding more of a refuge in urban areas in some instances.

“It’s not black and white any more.”Naturalist and award-winning children’s

author Peter Macinnes says the key to conservation is “passing the light” from one generation to the next.

“There are a huge number of things living right out there in the suburban backyard,” he says.

“One of the tricks I like showing to young kids is to open an umbrella, turn it upside down, grab a branch and shake it into the umbrella.

“There is always a complete ecosytem there, all sorts of stuff falls off and who knows who might catch the bug.”

Why we sweated, and sufferedBY EUGENE BENSON

SUMMER rainfall figures from across the westernsuburbs have confirmed what most suspected: it’sbeen a long, dry, scorching hot summer.

Data from Melbourne Water’s network of raingauges across Melbourne’s west shows it was a drierthan average summer at all suburban locations.

But for storms in the last four days of summer, therainfall totals would have been far lower — with theFebruary downpours accounting for a third of thetotal summer rain in most suburbs.

Rockbank recorded 77 millimetres compared toits long-term average of 105, Diggers Rest 98 (aver-age 124) and Melton South 112 (average 115).

Melbourne Water spokesman Nic McGay said thesummer marked a return to more traditional hot anddry conditions, following exceptionally wetsummers in 2010-11 and 2011-12.

‘‘It was a similar story in the four major catch-ments (Maroondah, O’Shannassy, Upper Yarra andThomson) that harvest most of Melbourne’s water.

‘‘Water storages started summer at 81.2 per centand ended the season at 75.8 per cent full — adecrease of almost 100 billion litres.’’

Despite the decline, Melbourne’s storages finishedthe season at their highest end-of-summer levelsince 1997.

End is nigh forweighbridgeBUNGAREE’S weighbridgecould be permanently closed byApril after Moorabool Councildecided against prolonging itslimited life expectancy.

A report found the almost-50-year-old weighbridge was in ‘‘faircondition at best’’ and catered foronly 350 vehicles a year, mainlylocal farmers.

The obsolete bridge is notexpected to last longer than fiveyears.

Its immediate future is depend-ant on the current operator’sapplication for mandatoryaccreditation with the NationalMeasurement Institute. The NMIwill allow it to be operated untilresults are assessed.

If the application is unsuccess-ful, and no replacement operatorcan be found, the council will beforced to close the weighbridge.

The council report found therewere 23 public weighbridges inthe Melbourne metropolitanarea, including three in Ballarat.Deemed an ‘‘obsolete structure’’with limited ability to undertakerefurbishment or rehabilitationworks, the weighbridge can onlyaccommodate vehicles up to 15metres in length, unless concreteaprons are extended, whichwould cost the council up to$40,000. Total costs to renew thestructure were estimated at$750,000.

A Victorian Farmers Federa-tion spokesman said the organ-isation was not aware of anylocal concerns about the weigh-bridge’s future.

The council indicated it wouldwrite to weighbridge users andprovide details of alternatelocations. — Ben Cameron

Marsh musos bring it homeBacchus Marsh musician Benjamin Dowd-

(pictured, second from left) has been innew garage rock band Apes for little more

than a year, but he’s already made a seriousmark on the Australian music scene.

Together with fellow Bacchus muso SamReale (second from right), Dowd and the four-piece group formerly known as the Boo HooHoos have already taken out Triple J’sUnearthed competition, and they performed atMelbourne’s Big Day Out in January.

Dowd, 21, who manages bands at BacchusMarsh’s Border Inn, says the Big Day Outexperience was ‘‘insane’’.

‘‘To meet some of the international acts andsee how they operate was great. I met the singerfrom Deathgrips. He was insane on stage but sorelaxed off it. We’re not very similar — we getup to a few antics in real life.’’

Apes and fellow Bacchus Marsh band HollowEverdaze will feature at the 12th annualMyrniong Music Festival this Saturday.

Event organiser Alan Baulcher says thefestival is building a loyal following. ‘‘The firstyear we had 150 attend; we expect in excess of1000 this year.’’

The event was started by Myrniong Recre-ation Reserve committee volunteers.

‘‘We were concerned at the time that thereserve was getting very little use,’’ Baulchersays. ‘‘Our love for music, as well, played a part.So from humble beginnings Myrniong Music inthe Park began.’’

Saturday’s festival at the MyrniongRecreation Reserve starts at 1pm and will run inconjunction with community stalls.

Stallholders can register with Karen atMyrniong Primary School on 53687 232. Fundsraised will go towards upkeep of the reserve.

Debut album an entertaining tour

MELBOURNE SKA ORCHESTRAWhat: Melbourne Ska Orchestra (Universal)Details: melbourneskaorchestra.com

It’s all rather jolly and familiar, writes Myke Bartlett

The debut album fromMelbourne’s own ska sensation isexactly the sort of late-night

party album you’d expect, given itsenergetic live shows.

Its approach to the genre is wide-ranging — taking in ska’s Jamaicanroots and a looser, fruitier take on thetwo-tone sound.

Dean Went to Mexico recallsMadness’ Night Boat to Cairo, trumpets blaring a lethargic salute onthe banks of the Nile — or the banksof the Rio Bravo, in this case.

Elsewhere, Learn to Love Againfuses a ska shuffle to a BurtBacharach-style tune, slinky vocalssliding a melody for which DionneWarwick would have hiked to SanJose.

It’s all rather jolly, if familiar. Thealbum kicks off with a tequila-fuelledtake on the Get Smart theme: a ragged,

wordless and sweaty tune destined tofill dance floors.

The retro trappings stay in place forLygon Street Meltdown, a Batman-infused tale of gangsters and shoot-outs. It’s here that the album getsclosest to a sense of place and purpose, rather than snatching wildly atinfluences and genre tropes.

Certainly there’s nothingparticularly new here. The album islargely missing the socio-politicalimpetus that shaped the best ska.

As it is, this is an entertaining tourthrough a much-loved genre.

There’s plenty here to move yourfeet, if not your conscience.

HILARY McNEVINEATING OUT

Mt Alexander Road offers a feastof restaurants and cafes —Greek, Japanese and Mexican

cuisines are on offer, as are numerouswine bars. But what’s a food stripwithout a good Italian restaurant?

At No.528 on the busy road, Italy 528easily carries the flag for great Italianfood.

The open room, with a huge mural toone side, white walls and dark woodfurniture, is stylish and welcoming.

The restaurant, open now for twoyears, was previously a motorcycle shopthat was gutted and renovated, incorporating a wood-fired oven for chefand co-owner Antonio Caruso to weave

his pizza magic. Called variously apizzeria and cucina (kitchen), its pizzasare a menu highlight, but there are sometempting starters including a simplebruschetta of tomatoes, basil and extravirgin olive oil ($9.50).

Equally delicious, we discovered, wasa plate of buffalo mozzarella and SanDaniele prosciutto ($22) — the lusciouscheese and fine slices of prosciuttocomplementing each other with subtleflavours.

The pizza list takes up much of themenu with a varied selection toppedwith good, fresh produce, and combina-tions using only a handful of ingredientsso that the quality of each is highlighted.

Apart from the Margherita (small $8/large $15), all the pizzas come in justone generous size.

A sturdy, slightly seasoned base istopped with sweet tomato, cow’s milkmozzarella and the odd basil leaf. It’squite simply delicious.

Other pizzas include a Capricciosa($20), topped with ham, olives,

artichokes and mushrooms. Ours wassweet, salty and savoury; a delicious, classic pizza.

When I asked for a Broccolotta ($20)topped with fontina and burata cheeses, broccoli and lemon, I was told therewas no broccoli available but theyhappily served it to me with zucchiniinstead.

It was a thoughtful gesture andproved to be a great pizza withsaltiness from the fontina andcreaminess from the burata cut throughwith the addition of lemon and a bitefrom the zucchini.

If you want good Italian onMt Alexander Road, or the west ingeneral, Italy 528 is certainly worth a try.

The parts professionalsWhen their school teacher sought a

recommendation for a local spare parts dealer, ‘‘Borgies on Collins Road’’ came the quick reply from the students. This just goes to show, says owner Mario Borg, how well known the business has become in its 18-year history in Melbourne’s western suburbs, eight in Melton.‘‘We have lots of loyal customers who have followed us from our earlier days in Ardeer and Sunshine,’’ he said. ‘‘To think it all started when I tinkered with cars from the age of 14 — and that interest led to opening my own wrecking yard back in 1995.’’Helped in the offi ce by daughter Rebecca, Mario and his team sells a whole range of spare parts including engines, automatic and manual transmissions, guards, bonnets, doors and radiators — and that’s just for starters.‘‘We have heaps more in stock so if a customer wants to get a vehicle back on the road we’ll probably have just the right part, even hard-to-fi nd ones.

‘‘And if we don’t have the part, we can source it through our extensive contacts with more than 100 other wrecking yards. And our parts are affordable and come with a 30-day warranty.’’Along with secondhand parts for Holden — VB-VE Commodore, TS-AH Astra, XC-TM Barina, Vectra, Viva, HSV, Captiva and Cruze — Borgies also stocks new parts for all makes and models.‘‘For the past three years, we’ve been selling loads of new parts including brakes, water pumps, radiators, fuel pumps, alternators, starter motors, clutch kits and suspensions. Rebecca is our new parts pricing expert so a chat with her will set customers right.’’

Borgies Auto Spares Pty Ltd is at 7 Collins Road, Melton, and is open 9am-5pm Monday-Friday and 9am-1.30pm Saturday. Inquiries: 9743 5000 or borgies.com.au.

What’s not to love?Extras give this family-ready house added sparkle, writes Carole Levy

17 Carlyon Close, MeltonBedrooms: 4Bathrooms: 2Living areas: Study, lounge, family-meals, rumpusThe rest: Ducted heating and cooling, spa, pergola, outdoorbar, pond, double garage with remote-control and internalaccessPrice: $429,000Private saleAgent: Sweeney Estate Agents Melton, 8746 2055

It’s the little extras that give this spacious houseadded sparkle — things like porcelain floortiles, wall cavities, a spa in the ensuite, roller

blinds throughout, and an excellent outdoorentertainment area.

Plus everything’s finished to a turn, includinglandscaping front and back.

Beyond a stamped concrete driveway andwalkway, the front door opens to a wide hallwaywith garage access. The house has well-placedhallways which help keep it free-flowing

To the right is an open study and opposite isthe lounge room, both with carpet.

The hall ducks right to the large main bedroomwith a ceiling fan, walk-in wardrobe and an openensuite with dual vanity basins, an oval-shapedspa and enclosed toilet.

Further down this hall is the main bathroom, separate toilet and another bedroom with built-in wardrobe.

Two more bedrooms and the laundry aredown another hallway from the living hub.

The kitchen has a return island bench, two-door pantry, microwave nook, timber-lookcabinets, D’Amani dishwasher and a 900mm gascooker beneath a steel-and-glass rangehood.

The meals area nearby is tiled, while the familyroom carpeted — practical choices.

An adjoining tiled rumpus room has access toa pitched-roof pergola over timber decking.

Here, a rustic, timber-topped bar and a rock-edged pond fringed by tropical greenery creates arelaxed vibe for entertainment.

There’s a patch of grass for children to playand a pittosporum hedge lines the back fence.

Close to Catholic Regional College, WedgePark Primary School, a milk bar and bus stop, this property has loads of appeal for familieswanting a street-proud neighbourhood.

MELTON PLANNING SCHEME

Notice of Preparation of Amendment

Amendment C135

Authorisation A02481

The Melton City Council has prepared Amendment C135 to the Melton Planning Scheme.

In accordance with section 8A(3) of the Planning and Environment Act 1987, the Minister for Planning authorised the Melton Council as planning authority to prepare the amendment.

The land affected by the amendment is 761-797 High Street, Melton West, 683-687 High Street Melton West, Parcel No. 14 on SP18899B, Parcel No. 31 on SP18899B, Parcel No. 32 on SP18899B, and Parcel No. 33 on SP18899B.

The amendment seeks to rezone 761-797 and 683-687 High Street, Melton West from Farming Zone to Residential 1 Zone (R1Z), rezone Parcels No. 14 and 31 on SP18899B from Farming Zone to Road Zone Category 1, and rezone Parcels No. 32 and 33 on SP18899B from Industrial 3 Zone to Road Zone Category 1 (RDZ1).

The amendment proposes to remove redundant zoning to enable the effi cient use of land within an established urban area, as well as acknowledge the purpose of the land planned for a diamond interchange connecting to the Western Freeway

You may inspect the amendment, any documents that support the amendment and the explanatory report about the amendment, free of charge, at the following locations:

New Porsche previewedEwan Kennedy examines the hot new 911 GT3

Heading Down Under: Low, tough and aimed at the hard-edged driver, the all-new Porsche 911 GT3.

Inside look: The GT3 interior.

For those to whom a standard Porsche 911isn’t hard-edged enough there’s also theoption of the race-bred GT3 variant. Details

of the he latest GT3 have just been revealed, together with the information that it’s coming toAustralia later in the year.

Though the new 911 GT3 is based on the latest911 Carrera, there have been major changes tothe engine, transmission and dynamics thatalmost make it a separate model.

The GT3 is powered by a 3.8-litre six-cylinder

engine that for the first time has direct petrolinjection. It provides up to 350kW (475hp in‘real’ performance car terms). It has titaniumconnecting rods and forged pistons to let it rev allthe way to 9000 rpm.

Porsche 911 GT3 comes standard with a newseven-speed PDK automated-manual double-clutch gearbox with ultra-fast sequential shifting. It features shorter gear ratios than the standard911, resulting in acceleration from zero to100km/h in just 3.5 seconds. It gets to 200 in lessthan 12 seconds. In the right conditions this hotnew Porsche 911 GT3 can reach 315km/h.

For the first time, the PDK transmission allowsthe driver to leave the gear shifts entirely to theadaptive transmission control. It comes with twoswitching strategies: Sport and Race Track.

The use of active rear-wheel steering for thefirst time on the new 911 GT3 gives excellenthandling precision and a high level of lateraldynamics. Depending on road speed, the systemsteers in the opposite or the same direction as thefront wheels, to improve agility and stability.

Porsche GT3 also has an electronically

controlled, fully variable rear differential lockand dynamic engine mounts.

There’s a newly developed all-aluminiumchassis with many adjustments on offer to tailorit to specific road and track needs. Big, 20-inchforged alloy wheels with a single central locknutnow permit larger tyres.

This version of the GT3 has a rear bodysection that is 44 mm wider than the Carrera S,

it’s topped by a large fixed rear wing.At the rear axle, larger braking discs with a

380mm diameter are used, the ventilation holesof the discs have been redesigned, and cooling isimproved by way of additional brake coolingducts on the rear axle.

Limited numbers of the all-new Porsche 911GT3 will go on sale in Australia late in 2013.Pricing is not yet finalised.

Plenty to satisfy an automotive ‘Oliver’Derek Ogden and Ewan Kennedy road test the Audi A6 limited edition

Imposing: Only a few Australians will get the chance to enjoy the Audi A6 allroad quattro limited edition.

As if the Audi A6 allroad quattro were notspecial enough, the German automobilemanufacturer has brought out a limited

edition for those automotive Oliver Twists whoask for more.

The third generation of the Avant (that’s Audi-speak for station wagon) has just dropped inDown Under, and with only 150 cars — repletewith the latest features — on offer, it’s odds-on tohave buyers digging deep for the $117,900-plusto park one in the garage.

Highlights include four-zone airconditioning, electric opening and closing tailgate, 20-inchfive-parallel spoke alloy wheels, heated frontseats and a choice of four metallic paint colours.

At almost five metres long and two metreswide, the Audi A6 allroad quattro has an impos-ing on-road presence. Xenon lights, includingdaytime running lights, are standard, with theoption of LED headlamps featuring an automaticdipping function.

On the downside, from the rear the vehicle hasa dated look. A mish-mash of angles and surfaces

appear to be competing with each other forattention, while the rear view from the driver’sseat is severely limited.

Legroom front and back is expansive andshoulder space up front benefits from the seatsbeing 20 millimetres farther apart.

The luggage area is impressively versatile withroom for 595 litres of kit. With the back seatsfolded away, this is increased to 1680 litres.

A range of roof racks is on offer, and modifica-tions to body components and engine manage-ment mean the A6 allroad quattro can tow up to21⁄2 tonnes.

The wagon will hit 100km/h in 6.6 secondsfrom rest — 180kW of power and 580Nm oftorque from the 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6 see tothat.

Over an easy cruise on the motorway, the A6allroad quattro Limited Edition went through afrugal 5.9 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres, whichis impressive for a big car with a high-powerengine. Around town, it hovered around eightlitres per 100 kilometres, still impressively low.

Showers sweep Melton into the big oneBY TEO PELLIZZERI

MELTON advanced to the South West first XIgrand final of the Victorian Sub-District CricketAssociation on Sunday after drawing withCaulfield.

Werribee beat Elsternwick to set up an all-western suburbs affair in the season decider.

But there was no weekend win for the Lions asrain had the final say on Caulfield’s season.

Melton, the minor premier, advanced thanksto the draw which saw no play on Sunday.

Caulfield had had some early success onSaturday after winning the toss and sending the

Lions in. Mick Allen (34) and Michael Alexander(24) put on 61 for the first wicket but departed inquick succession in a collapse of 4-24.

But 38 overs was the most Caulfield could getin as Melton’s 4-85 score would prove to be thefinal one for the match.

At Chirnside Park, Werribee bowled outElsternwick for 97 in just 36.3 overs and knock-ed off 1-100 in 21.4 overs to advance to the final.

MacPherson Park will be the host venue forthe match, starting this Saturday from middayand continuing on Sunday.

In Western Suburbs United Churches CricketAssociation, a rain-out delivered a premiership

for Eynesbury Green as it drew with CharlesSturt University to win the one-day grade.

The Eagles, a new club in its first season, havebeen a suburban sports fairytale, going from ateam with eight players heading into their firstmatch to one which ultimately ended up fieldingtwo teams in the division.

Eynesbury Green finished top of the home-and-away season by one win from CSU, and itmade all the difference in Saturday’s grand final.

Eynesbury faced 35 overs batting first withStuart Peters (53) and Lee Williamson (55no)driving the total to 6-184 at the compulsoryclose. But the Eagles never got the chance to bowl

as rain swept in, though they took out thepremiership nonetheless.

In Ballarat Cricket Association, Darley’sfourth XI has one hand on the premiership afterwinning the first innings by a run and consolidat-ing in its second dig against Mt Clear.

Darley made 110 first up without a batsmanmaking more than 25, but managed to make thescore a winner as Matthew O’Brien’s 7-41 helpedbowl out Mt Clear for 109.

Brett Walker then hit 115no in the secondinnings and Clint Salisbury 59no as Darleyreached stumps on day two with 1-208 on theboard.

ST ANTHONYS is heading to theMcIntyre Cup division after chasingdown Gisborne’s total within the firsttwo days of the GDCA B grade grandfinal.

Gisborne struggled to build partner-ships as the Dragons were all out 128before St Anthonys made 4-151.

Only Steven Docherty (37) passed30 for the Dragons as Cam Clayton(3-47), Bobby Keeping (2-28) andJoshua Evans (2-17) shared thewickets for St Anthonys.

The chase needed 52 overs forSt Anthonys to reach its goal.

In C grade, Ashfield needs a lower-order special to deny Diggers RestBulla Village the title this Saturday.

The Burras suffered a 3-0 collapseafter a promising start to be 4-54,rallying to 174 all out.

Shannon O’Keefe (28), AndrewKnight (26), and Blake Robinson (24)

all chipped in to ensure a competitivetotal for the Burras. Ashfield reached7-117 at stumps on Sunday, withO’Keefe (3-19) and Rhys Berry (3-33)the main wicket-takers with the ball.

In D grade, St Anthonys has theupper hand after reducing Gisborne to4-64 in reply to 183.

In E grade, Lancefield (220) isclosing in on victory with EastSunbury 7-136 in reply.

Jarryd McGill made 94 opening forLancefield.

This year’s list has seven players registered toBallarat Football League junior clubs (BacchusMarsh and Darley) and another seven hailing fromthe Riddell District junior league (Melton, MeltonSouth, Rupertswood, Sunbury).

Bees seize on umpire’s call that goes their wayBY TEO PELLIZZERI

LATE wickets and a hotly disputedumpiring call have left Sunbury with alifeline in the McIntyre Cup final asSunbury United took the upper hand.

The Gisborne District CricketAssociation decider was restricted byrain on Saturday, but a wind-sweptLangama Park was a happy huntingground for Bees batsmen on Sunday.

United could have been in animpregnable position at stumps if notfor two wickets late in the day to leavethe Bees 7-292 at the close.

But the ace in the hole for United isskipper James Hughes, allowed toretire hurt after being hit in the helmetby a Jason McGann bouncer, whichcaused the skipper to drop his bat onthe stumps.

Sunbury went up in celebrationbefore realising that Hughes had hischeek split open and needed treat-ment.

After much conjecture, the Unitedskipper walked from the field not out,but retired hurt.

Andrew Powell held his nervethrough the controversy, showing nosigns of nervous 90s as he hit 102.

But holing out to mid-off ended hisknock 10 minutes before stumps, while Adam Billinghurst was caught inclose on the leg side from the final ballof the day.

Powell and Lyndon Dowsett (71)had shared a 134-run partnership forthe fifth wicket, while Nathan Morsemade 64 at the top of the order.

McGann, Sunbury’s captain, took5-59 from 33 overs through the first

two days. ‘‘A couple of early wicketsnext week . . .we’ve just got to bounceback,’’ McGann said.

Powell said he was disappointed notto reach stumps not out.

‘‘It was a tough day early, hard toscore but we did well to tough it out.

‘‘We’ve still got heaps of work to do.We’ve got to get out there, make asmuch as we can and then bowl themout.

‘‘I’m spewing I didn’t bat to the endof the day, but it’s always good tomake a hundred.’’

Action continues this Saturday.Sunday is available for play should afirst innings result not be reached bythe end of the third day.
