What started as a small day in 1861 – only attended by 4,000 people – is now one of the country ’s most discussed and anticipated sporting events, with well over 120 countries and up to 700 million people around the world tuning in to watch 'the race that stops the nation™’. However, the action doesn’t stop with the Cup – the carnival continues with the opulent Crown Oaks Day (6 November), where fashion is the focus and champagne the drink of choice. Rounding off the week is the family friendly Emirates Stakes Day (8 November), which sees Flemington filled with picnic rugs, plus children's games and entertainment.

Tell us about The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk.The exhibition is a spectacular overview of Gaultier’s oeuvre, featuring the first dress created by the designer in 1971, his latest haute couture and ready-to-wear collections, costumes worn by Kylie Minogue and Beyoncé and haute couture dresses worn by the likes of Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett and Sarah Jessica Parker. All in all 140 superbly crafted garments are on show, in addition to photographs, sketches, stage costumes, excerpts from runway shows, film, television, concerts and dance performances. Above all, this will be a unique chance to see iconic pieces like Madonna’s corsets from the 1990 Blond Ambition World Tour and some of the most imaginative couture garments ever.

Jean Paul Gaultier has had a long history in fashion, why do you think he has made such an impact?Broadly speaking, Gaultier has literally reshaped the vocabulary of fashion by recasting time-honoured classics into a new light, whether the bra, the stripe, the trench coat or skirts for men. But it ’s more his attitude that has been so inspiring. In Gaultier’s world, everyone has their own sense of beauty and clothes have no gender, race or creed.

This season we talk to Roger Leong, Curator, Fashion and Textiles at the National Gallery of Victoria as the gallery prepares to launch the spectacular The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk.

What can visitors expect from this Australian first exhibition?From the very start the visitor will be immersed into a kind of ‘underworld’ of Gaultier’s inspirations appropriately named The Odyssey. This space is filled with fantastical Virgins, Mermaids and Sailors winking, murmuring, singing and talking, not to mention a mannequin of the man himself introducing the exhibition. Each room presents yet another experience. With nearly 40 years in fashion and a manic sense of creativity, there will be a lot of stories to tell.

What are your standouts of the exhibition?The corsets are incredible; nobody does them better or takes them to a completely new level quite like Gaultier. Then the couture pieces, like when the beading mimics torn flesh or feathered stripes. But I have to say Gaultier’s couture tailoring is quite special, for me they channel the essence of the Parisienne.

What are your favourite pre and post exhibition haunts?Well, this is a great opportunity to plug the NGV’s series of Friday Nights. Almost every Friday night while the exhibition is on, there will be DJ’s, entertainment, food and drink.

Final Siren Close to 2.5 million will tune in, 44 athletes will battle, two teams will contend and only one will walk away champion – the 2014 Toyota AFL Grand Final really is one of the biggest moments on the sporting calendar.
