■ Had it not been for one of the morebizarre maritime chases in Australia’scolonial history, it could have beenyears before the now-Hunter Valley’srich agricultural lands and coal seamswere to be opened up to early settle-ment – including to go on to becomeone of Australia’s premierwinemaking regions.
In the early 1790s a group of con-victs stole one of the only two sailingsloops in the-then fledgling SydneyTown and fled north to what is nowknown as Port Stephens.
They lived there for several yearswith the local aboriginal people, be-fore being found by accident by thesloop HMS Providence that had beenswept north in a fierce storm while onan exploratory trip out of Sydney.
The four surviving “miserable andhalf-starved” convicts happily re-turned to Sydney Town aboard theProvidence to face the music for theirescape.
But after just a couple of years twoof them organised another escape…this time taking the colony’s only othersailing boat, the “Cumberland” andonce again heading north.
Colonial Governor John Hunter or-dered a search for them, and bizarrelyLieutenant John Shortland took off inpursuit of the sloop in just a row-boatmanned by a handful of sailors.
That was 1797 and he never didfind the escapees, but he did comeacross the broad entrance to a riverthat some lost fishermen had earlierdubbed Coal River after discovering
■ Wayne Stehbens has built an envi-able reputation as Senior Winemakerat Coonawarra’s Katnook Estate forcreating wonderfully fuller-bodiedMerlots that always stand out from thecrowd.
And his newly-released 2009 is nodifferent: crafted from full-flavouredfruit from a low-yielding vintage, thiswine’s got beautifully up-front plumand red currant flavours, a nice sweet-ness to it – together with a touch ofspice – and fine tannins.
“We had average winter rainfallthat helped budburst in Spring,”Wayne recalls of the 2009 vintage.
“But January was a testing timewith a mini-heatwave, slightly belowaverage temperatures for the rest ofthe vintage – that was the latest since2004 – and yet resultant fruit of out-standing flavour.”
At $40 enjoy this one with rare rib-eye fillet and field mushrooms.
■ A gotta-have for yourself or a fam-ily or friend wine buff this Christmasis Jeremy Oliver’s Australian WineAnnual 2012.
Jeremy’s used his 27 years indus-try experience to rate 14,000-plus cur-rent and back-vintages from more than300 leading Australian producers …it’s a must for those looking for thebest from

One For Lunch■ What better way to ring-in NewYear than with the same winesthat Sydney’s Lord Mayor and herofficial guests will be enjoying atthe Sydney Opera House on De-cember 31 as they watch the an-nual fire-works that have madeSydney the New Year’s Eve capi-tal of the world.
The Hunter Valley’sScarborough Wine Co has beenchosen to provide the wines forthis year’s official bash – and atthe Dawes Point Viewing Area fora selection of the 1.5-millionpeople who will line the harbourforeshores for this year’s event –and one in particular to think aboutfor your own celebrations is their2009 Scarborough Yellow LabelChardonnay.
At $28 it’s honeyed lime, but-terscotch and roasted cashewflavours match beautifully mostparty foods.

coal along its floodplains. On his re-turn, Lieutenant Shortland told Gov-ernor Hunter of the rich potential ofthe river (which Shortland officiallynamed after the Governor,) and freesettlers and pardoned convicts wereencouraged to go forth and settle there.
They quickly discovered just howrich those lands were, and soon a porttown called Newcastle grew up, sup-plying the new settlers with their needsand shipping their produce to SydneyTown, Hunter Valley coal to India …and by the early 1820s, wine toSydney from the first Hunter Valleyvineyards.
And while by the mid-1970s theHunter Valley’s wine and allied in-dustries were booming with a newkind of tourism sassiness, industrialNewcastle seemed trapped in a timewarp, its image reflected by stand-upcomic Bob Hudson’s The NewcastleSong reminiscing long and clear onthe mating habits of the night-timeoccupants of the city’s Hunter StreetMall.
But today Newcastle has found it-self internationally-recognised, listedthis year in the Lonely Planet travelguide as one of the World’s Top 10Cities to Visit — alongside such leg-ends as New York, Valencia andDelhi. So, how did the ugly ducklingturn into such a strikingly beautifulswan?
In reality many facets of that swanhave been obvious but unappreciatedsince the city’s founding — grand co-lonial public buildings, imposing com-mercial and residential streetscapes, and a magnificent coastline of starkrocky outcrops contrasted by tempt-ingly sandy beaches.
But most importantly has been amore-recent appreciation ofNewcastle’s history, together with aseemingly new-found devotion tolandscaping, the arts, tourism and cui-sine, and an interesting scheme calledIllumination Newcastle that nightlybathes some of its most historic build-ings under soft floodlights.
The transformation is most obvi-ous in the city’s eastern end, wherethe old Royal Newcastle Hospital sitehas given way to tourist accommoda-tion, cafés and apartments, paving theway for a 24-hour life rather than adrab nine-to-five existence.
Amongst new accommodations isthe Sebel Harbourside, a near-beachside hotel whose 88 guest roomsfeature chic, contemporary furnish-ings, and all the mod cons of a 4.5-star property.
Many of its rooms also offer spec-tacular ocean views. Amongst histori-cal nearby attractions is FortScratchley that formed an integral linkin our defences against potential in-vasion — real and imagined — andduring World War II, whose canonswere Australia’s only-ever to fire inanger against an invading naval force.
The Fort’s resurrection allows visi-tors to spend a couple of hours touringits tunnels, and to enjoy the most spec-tacular views of the port and its mostsignificant landmark, Nobby’sHead.Nearby, the grand CustomsHouse attests to Newcastle’s mari-time and trading stature, and if visit-ing Newcastle don’t miss the EastNewcastle Heritage Walk that em-braces eighteen historic sites from theold Customs House, to the originalgaol site, the beach promenade andan historic convict-era lumber yard.
