feet of steel wire into a slinky in just 10 seconds.• James did not mean to create the slinky in the

first place, it was all an accident.• Though he invented the Slinky, he did not name

it, his wife did.

Invention: The Slinky

• The Slinky came out by accident!• The Slinky was invented in 1943.• By the 50th anniversary of Slinkys (1995),

Richard James had sold over a quarter of a billion Slinkys.

• NASA used slinkys in zero-gravity physics experiments in the space shuttle.

• US troops in Vietnam used slinkys to demonstrate them as mobile radio antennas.
