Basic Concepts

Qi: Life force, vital energy behind all physiological processes. warms body, pathogen protection, promotes

growthMeridian network system Disruption of flow results in illnessMechanism of Qi still mysterious

Acupuncture Points

There are over 365 points on the human body Each point has a specific set of functions Usually, several points in different places are used in treatments.

Points can influence all areas of the body, points on the foot may be used for headaches, for example.

Acupuncture points linked together in lines called “meridians”

Meridians named for associated OrganKidney, Heart, Small Intestine, BladderLiver, Pericardium, Triple Energizer,

GallbladderSpleen, Lung, Large Intestine, Stomach

Meridians

Meridians have decreased electrical resistance relative to surrounding skin

Qi measured as microelectrical currentFlows in a circuitToes to fingers to head to toesUp on anterior surface of the bodyDown on posterior surface of the body

Meridians

Yin and Yang is a Daoist philosophical concept. They are means to generalize the opposite principles which may be observed in all related phenomena within the natural world. Yin: water, cold, stillness, dark, night. Yang: fire, heat, movement, light, day.

A key element to treatment in TCM is to bring the appropriate balance of Yin and Yang to the particular organ, system, or area of the body.

Xiang Sheng ( inter-generation ): refers to promoting and accelerating aspects of the mutual generation of objects according to the theory of five elements, i.e., wood generates fire, fire generates earth, earth generates metal, metal generates water, and water generates wood.

Xiang Ke ( inter- inhibition, or control ) : refers to the

restraining and controlling relationships among objects according to the theory of the five phases, i.e., wood inhibiting earth, earth inhibiting water, water inhibiting fire, fire inhibiting metal, and metal inhibiting wood.

Two examples of relationships between Phases:

…considers asthma to be an indicator of an underlying health imbalance.

…treats the underlying root imbalance, rather than just the symptoms.

…considers all lifestyle & environmental factors when deciding the best course of treatment.

…includes nutritional & lifestyle recommendations.

Once the underlying imbalance is taken care of, the symptoms resolve, and the triggers lose their impact.

Deficiency of Energy (Qi) of the Lung, Spleen, and/or Kidneys. Plus, Accumulation of Phlegm (hot or cold type).

Caused by inappropriate diet, food additives, toxin exposure, repeated respiratory infection, genetics, emotional strain, lack of exercise, overwork, and even the asthma medications themselves can further contribute to the deficiency.

Helps maintain normal descending function, while receiving the ascending water vapor from the kidney

TCM LUNG Physiology

Control the Body Surface

Distributes body fluid to the tissues which in turn helps regulate skin moisture and sweating

Provides Wei Qi
