University of Meiji: Cool Japan Summer Program

Meiji University’s Cool Japan Summer Program is a series of lectures and field trips on a wide variety of

subjects relating to Japan’s contemporary images – from manga, anime and music, to fashion, craftsman-

ship and cuisine. We invite you to discuss many issues of “Japan” with some of the leading researchers

and professionals of each field. Let us look into the essence of Japanese pop culture while exploring is

current social context and future potential. We will investigate diverse aspects of Japanese society and

uncover their underlying traditional elements.

Meiji University is a member of the “Tokyo Big Six”, the six most prestigious universities in Tokyo, and its

reputation extends throughout Japan and the world. Its distinctive campuses attract more than 100 000

applicants each year and currently there are over 33 000 students including approximately 1 100 interna-

tional students enrolled in the University.

Program Overview

52.5 hours in total

(Lectures 25.5hrs, Field trips 22.5hrs, Presentations 4.5hrs)

Participants will be graded on attendance, assignments, and a final presentation.

A certificate will be given upon successful completion of the program.

150 000 Yen

Travel Grants

UTS BUiLD travel grants of $1000 AUD are available for 5 students.

Applications will be on a competitive basis. UTS BUiLD travel grants are ranked on the merit of the appli-

cation statement.

OS-HELP Loan

Extra financial support can be gained by applying for an OS-Help loan if applicable. If applying for OS-HELP

it is compulsory that students attend the OS-HELP workshop on 23 or 24 April 2015.

Travel and medical insurance through UTS Travel Insur-

ance Policy

NOT INCLUDED IN PROGRAM COST:

International return airfares from Sydney to Japan

Visa application costs

Personal expenses and spending money

Accommodation in Tokyo

Who can apply

This fantastic trip is open to 5 UTS:BUiLD students with:

A keen interest in Japanese culture.

A current GPA of 1.5 or over.

An easy going, flexible and independent character with a willingness to take initiative to learn.

Willingness to work hard and adapt to different surroundings and work environments

Strong team working skills

Requirements

If you are selected you must:

Attend a pre departure session

Represent UTS with distinction at all times during the

program

Submit at least two blog posts during the program to UTS to be used on the UTS:BUiLD Abroad Blog

Submit a reflection piece to BUiLD on your return

Complete a feedback survey on your return

Academic Credit

Students successfully completing the International Summer School may be eligible for academic credit

towards their UTS course; 6CP electives only.

You must complete a concurrent study form to your Faculty Student Centre and have it approved before

being accepted on this program.
