6:The wind goes toward the south, and turns aroundto the north. It turns around continually as it goes,and the wind returns again to its courses.

7:All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full.To the place where the rivers flow, there they flowagain.8:All things are full of weariness beyond uttering. Theeye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled withhearing.

9:That which has been is that which shall be; and thatwhich has been done is that which shall be done: andthere is no new thing under the sun.10:Is there a thing of which it may be said, "Behold,this is new?" It has been long ago, in the ages whichwere before us.

11:There is no memory of the former; neither shallthere be any memory of the latter that are to come,among those that shall come after.12:I, Kohelet, was king over Yisra'el in Yerushalayim.

13:I applied my heart to seek and to search out bywisdom concerning all that is done under Heaven. It isa heavy burden that G-D has given to the sons of mento be afflicted with.

14:I have seen all the works that are done under thesun; and, behold, all is vanity and a chasing afterwind.

15:That which is crooked can't be made straight; andthat which is lacking can't be counted.

16:I said to myself, "Behold, I have obtained for myselfgreat wisdom above all who were before me inYerushalayim. Yes, my heart has had great experienceof wisdom and knowledge.

17:I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to knowmadness and folly. I perceived that this also was achasing after wind.18:For in much wisdom is much grief; and he whoincreases knowledge increases sorrow.

(2)1:I said in my heart, "Come now, I will test you withmirth: therefore enjoy pleasure;" and, behold, this alsowas vanity.2:I said of laughter, "It is foolishness;" and of mirth,"What does it accomplish?

3:I searched in my heart how to cheer my flesh withwine, my heart yet guiding me with wisdom, and howto lay hold of folly, until I might see what it was goodfor the sons of men that they should do under Heavenall the days of their lives.

4:I made myself great works. I built myself houses. Iplanted myself vineyards.

5:I made myself gardens and parks, and I plantedtrees in them of all kinds of fruit.

6:I made myself pools of water, to water therefrom theforest where trees were reared.

7:I bought men-servants and maid-servants, and hadservants born in my house. I also had greatpossessions of herds and flocks, above all who werebefore me in Yerushalayim;

8:I also gathered silver and gold for myself, and thetreasure of kings and of the provinces. I got myselfmen-singers and women-singers, and the delights ofthe sons of men -- musical instruments, and that ofall sorts.

9:So I was great, and increased more than all whowere before me in Yerushalayim. My wisdom alsoremained with me.

10:Whatever my eyes desired, I didn't keep from them.I didn't withhold my heart from any joy, for my heartrejoiced because of all my labor, and this was myportion from all my labor.

11:Then I looked at all the works that my hands hadworked, and at the labor that I had labored to do; and,behold, all was vanity and a chasing after wind, andthere was no profit under the sun.

12:I turned myself to consider wisdom, madness, andfolly: for what can the king's successor do? Just thatwhich has been done long ago.

13:Then I saw that wisdom excels folly, as far as lightexcels darkness.

14:The wise man's eyes are in his head, and the foolwalks in darkness -- and yet I perceived that oneevent happens to them all.

15:Then said I in my heart, "As it happens to the fool,so will it happen even to me; and why was I then morewise?" Then said I in my heart that this also is vanity.

16:For of the wise man, even as of the fool, there is nomemory for ever, seeing that in the days to come allwill have been long forgotten. Indeed, the wise manmust die just like the fool!

17:So I hated life, because the work that is workedunder the sun was grievous to me; for all is vanity anda chasing after wind.18:I hated all my labor in which I labored under thesun, seeing that I must leave it to the man who comesafter me.

19:Who knows whether he will be a wise man or afool? Yet he will have rule over all of my labor in whichI have labored, and in which I have showed myselfwise under the sun. This also is vanity.

20:Therefore I began to cause my heart to despairconcerning all the labor in which I had labored underthe sun.21:For there is a man whose labor is with wisdom,with knowledge, and with skillfulness; yet he shallleave it for his portion to a man who has not laboredtherein. This also is vanity and a great evil.

22:For what has a man of all his labor, and of thestriving of his heart, in which he labors under the sun?

23:For all his days are sorrows, and his travail is grief;yes, even in the night his heart takes no rest. This alsois vanity.24:There is nothing better for a man than that heshould eat and drink, and make his soul enjoy good inhis labor. This also I saw, that it is from the hand ofG-D.

25:For who can eat, or who can have enjoyment, morethan I?

26:For to the man who pleases him, G-D giveswisdom, knowledge, and joy; but to the sinner hegives travail, to gather and to heap up, that he maygive to him who pleases G-D. This also is vanity and achasing after wind.

10:So I saw the wicked buried. Indeed they came alsofrom holiness. They went and were forgotten in thecity where they did this. This also is vanity.
