JANUARY Ponggal 16 January 2015 • Arulmigu Sri Mahamariamman Temple, Lebuh Queen, PenangOne of the most important festivals of the Tamil community, Ponggal is observed to offer gratitude to the sun for a year of good harvest. During this celebration, people decorate their homes with sugarcane, mango leaves and draw decorative patterns on the floor known as ‘kolam’. Members of the household gather to cook a sweet rice, also known as Ponggal.

FEBRUARY Thaipusam 3 February 2015 Batu Caves, Selangor This extraordinary festival pays homage to the Hindu deity Lord Muruga. Thousands of devotees carry milk pots and ornate frames known as ‘kavadis’ to fulfil their vows. At night, a grand chariot procession takes place in major cities. Thaipusam is celebrated on a grand scale in Batu Caves, Selangor and also in other destinations such as Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor and Kedah.

Pesta Perarakan Chingay 2015Chingay Parade 26 February 2015 • Johor Bahru, JohorChingay is a street parade that is part of the Chinese New Year celebration. The parade brings together nearly 145 groups along a 15km route around the city. Johor Bahru will be abuzz with the sound of gongs and drums, lion dances, acrobatic performances and beautifully decorated floats.

Festival Hari Moyang Mah Meri Mah Meri Spirits Day Festival 7 March 2015 • Mah Meri Cultural Village, Pulau Carey, SelangorThis is an annual festival of the aboriginal Mah Meri people, held to honour their ancestors. Songkran 12 - 14 April 2015 • KedahSongkran is a delightful water festival that also marks the Siamese New Year. It is celebrated over a three-day period with revellers splashing water on one another.
