announced a global environment

educational programme for students.

The Bayer Young Environmental

of environmental protection and

sustainability, said a statement from

Bayer.

The programme is open to all Indian

Research of India (ICRI) on April

administration to build “appropriate

skilled teams” for the industry which

lacks trained healthcare

professionals.

The institute has started the two-

Medical University of South

Carolina (MUSC) in the US.

”The Indian healthcare system lacks

trained healthcare professionals and

ICRI chairman Shiv Ram Dugal said.

Graduates or final year graduation

students in disciplines of medicine,

Dear Readers,

A BIG THANKYOU for

completing 2 years of

MyEducationalGuide –

Empowering Youth. We celebrate

this 2nd Anniversary by presenting

you, Mega Issue of MEG with a

brand new supplement – WASSUP!

I hope you like this supplement.

It will be a regular feature of MEG.

MEG is not only a platform for

career awareness but also a

platform to connect and grow by

sharing news and views. Your

feedback on articles and

suggestions is highly appreciated.

We at MEG are constantly working

towards making MEG interactive

and student centric. I wish to invite

your stories of success and failures,

guidelines to your fellow student

and words of encouragement and

motivation to the entire student

community across the globe at

[email protected].

This process is for the mutual benefit

of all readers and especially for us

at MEG, as we are working towards

our vision of making MEG the first

International Career Oriented

Newspaper.

At a personal level, I always enjoy

meeting our educators, students,

teachers, not just for business

purpose but more for enhancing my

understanding and knowledge about

many relevant matters. There is lot

that is happening in education circuit

today. MEG could prove to be yet

another learning ground for me and

our readers.

I leave no opportunity to go green

again and again; our WASSUP

supplement features an article on

Environmental Gyaan. We have been

regularly coming up on issues of

environment in the past; we also ran

a contest on “GO GREEN” ideas

(July-Aug’09 to Mar-Apr’10).

Through this supplement, I request

our responsible citizens to beaware

of our needs and one such

important need is “Environment”.

Instead of blaming the system or

the government or the industrialist

let us play our part by not using

plastics, switching off the electricity

when not required, using public

transport or car pooling, having

small plants in your balcony/

window, etc. Let us save our

environment for our next

generation.

I have been an avid reader of

MEG, since it was launched in

July 2008. Over the past 2 years

MEG has presented various career

options to students. It gives

beautiful insight with the right

depth of information required to

pursue the option, if it invokes a

student’s interest.

I hope the students are making

the utmost use of the publication

which comes to them absolutely

free and sharing the information

with other fellow students and

friends.

I wish all the good luck to MEG

ACADEMIC PROFILE ;

TO STUDY FASHION

To study fashion design a student

should have completed a degree in

fashion designing. Various courses

are available like Degree/Diplomas/

Certificate programs in fashion

education. Courses offered in fashion

designing have fashion illustration,

apparel making, pattern making, and

garment construction, elements of

design color concepts, fashion

history, textiles, draping,

CAD, and portfolio making.

By the time you finish the

course you will have mastered

the step-by-step production of

a garment — from designing to

pattern making, production and even

marketing.

You could also opt for post-graduate

courses in garment manufacture,

merchandising, etc.

There are well known institutes like

INIFDAndheri that offer specialized

degree and diploma courses. Some

institutes also offer post graduate

M.B.A degree in retail and visual

merchandising.

Students are also expected to take

part in fashion shows and big

platforms like Lakme fashion weeks

give them tremendous exposure to

experience the real world of fashion.

Graduating in these courses will

prepare them to take on a role in the

fashion industry. As fashion

designers a spectrum of varied career

are always open to you.

personal Ability and Skills of the

Individual. Generally, a fresh

graduate can look for a monthly pay

packet of Rs.8, 000 to Rs.12, 000.

For those who are extremely

talented, this can touch Rs.15, 000.

Those people with higher experience

can command a far greater salary.

Even the increase in the annual salary

is high for each level. With the

increase in demand for the

professionals in fabric designing the

salaries are likely to increase q

The bill allows foreign universities

and institutes to set up campuses –

independently or jointly – in India.

We all are aware of the problems

faced by Indian students traveling

abroad for better career

opportunities. These universities on

Indian soil will give an opportunity

to students who want to seek quality

education in the field of research

and other arenas. This has initiated

the debate within the country as to

we should allow foreign universities

to open up their campus in India or

not.

Indian education system is not

evolving with time. There was an

era where we were producing more

of entrepreneurs then graduates and

post graduates of today. Then Indians

shifted from their traditional

‘Gurukul system’ of education to the

British Education system, and are

still blaming the same for our

downfall in providing education.

During the British Raj we started

the system which focused more on

marks/degrees and less on

Knowledge, and we kept on

following it for centuries. On the

contrary, British grew from their

traditional system of teaching to

more analytical development of the

brains. Today if we do not learn from

the international standards we will

lag far behind the rest of the world.

The international universities in the

country will bring in different ways

of teaching and evaluating the

students. We can see a lot of

innovation in primary education

system (especially in big cities)

because of international school’s

branches opening in India. None of

the university in India is ranked

amongst top universities in the world.

We need to ponder a thought as to

why our Journals and research thesis

are not of international standards.

We have such great institutes like

IIT, IIM and AIIMS, still our

international recognition in the field

of research in science or social

science is negligible. Why, students

have to go abroad if they want to

pursue research as their career. We

all have answers to these questions;

the need of the hour is to let the

change come in. We need

international universities to raise our

standards of higher education. It is

a global world and in this era of

globalization if our coming

generation is not taught at global

standards then we all should be

prepared to be blamed by them for

being orthodox in our approach.

Indian universities will also have to

gear up and bring change in

methodology of imparting

knowledge to the students. The

quality of teaching in Indian

universities will eventually rise due

to rise in competition.

But at the same time, onus of

bringing in high quality lies on the

institutes, Government and other

stakeholders who are introducing

these foreign universities to our

country. Institute of Clinical

Research has tied up with one of the

best universities of US i.e. Medical

University of South Carolina, for

providing Master in Health

administration. This kind of tie ups

will definitely cater to the problem

of health care industry in India as

we really do not have professionals

in this sector. In the end the quality

largely also depends on the students

also who enroll for such courses. As

one thing which brings change is

“whether student has enrolled in the

course to attain knowledge of that

field or to get degree in that particular

my mantra

Make notes while you listen.

Get an idea of the overall content.

The listening section is about your

comprehension skills, whether do

you understand what is spoken? Can

you figure out the gist of the content

and purpose of the content? Can you

figure out the attitude of the speaker?

Do you connect with the content?

Are you good at making inferences?

Like any other skill listening too

needs a lot of practice for the non-

native speaker. I recommend: Watch

English movies, Listen to audio

books, and Listen to English music.

Regular listening will increase your

knowledge of vocabulary and

phrases, understanding of

pronunciation and accent.

Do’s and Don’ts of listening.

Do’s

Focus on the content and the flow

of material.

Anticipate what the speaker is

going to say.

Stay active throughout thereby,

you can know what to expect.

Pay attention to the transition of

content i.e. how the speaker moves

from one point to another.

in short : FOCUS

Dont’s

Do not get disturbed by the

speaker’s style and delivery.

Do not assume anything.

Do not bank on your memory,

make notes as you listen.

in short : PRACTISE

For beginners, try listening to short

audio files, and then gradually

increase the length of the file.

Geometric progressions

A geometric progression is a

sequence of numbers where each

term after the first is found by

multiplying the previous term by a

fixed number called the common

ratio. The sequence

1, 3, 9, 27, . . .

is a geometric progression with first

Scenario in India

In present scenario, India is very

much experiencing the effects of

globalization. Currently almost all

economies are facing financial sector

crisis & threat of global recession.

However Indian economy appears

to have strong foundation and solid

structure. Therefore both advantages

and disadvantages are pushing the

country into a fuzzy state. There are

many factors affecting most of the

fields into growth or into perish. The

education field is also equally

affected. There is a constant

encouragement to train and produce

skilled and technically challenged

manpower; on the contrary the

mushrooming of technical

institutions across the country can

be seen. India has 40 million

unemployed but Indian Inc is

desperately seeking talent. India is

the second largest reservoir of

knowledge: resource engineers,

scientists, managers and skilled

personnel and also with the largest

pool of IT manpower in the world.

On an estimate there are 150,000 IT

professionals in Bangalore as against

120,000 in Silicon Valley. During

the 10th Five Year Plan Period, the

Govt. of India proposes to invest a

sum of USD 1.92 billion for

promotion of higher and technical

education. State of Maharashtra

needs young & capable minds to

think in innovative manner for a

rapid transformation & progress.

Currently only around 25% of

technical graduates and 10 – 15%

of general graduates are suitable for

employment in the ITES Industry.

Projections show that, the IT/ITES

sector will need a workforce of 2.3

million to maintain its current market

share. However, there will be a

potential shortfall of nearly 0.5

million qualified employees and 70%

of this will be in the BPO industry

alone.

India is witnessing an unprecedented

consumption boom. The Economy

is growing by 9 % which results

improvement in income dynamics

along with favorable demographics

and spending patterns are driving

the consumption demand.

Indian retail industry is ranked

among the ten largest retail markets

in the attitudinal shift of the Indian

consumers in terms of “Choice

Preference” , ‘Value for Money ‘the

emergence of organized retail

formats have transformed the face

of retailing in Indian retail industry.

Retail Industry will require qualified

trained & skilled manpower in the

immediate future to cater the

consumption needs.

Internationally recognized and cost

effective education of high quality

attracts students from all over the

world to India. Foreign universities

are increasingly looking at India and

especially Maharashtra state as a

potential resource base.

In India, there are 272 universities

(including 18 central universities),

81 deemed universities, five

institutions established through state

and central legislation and 11

institutes of national importance

established through central

legislation.

At present around 84 per cent of

total enrolled are concentrated in the

fields of Arts, Science and

Commerce, while the remaining 16

per cent are in professional fields.

So considering the tough completion

with the foreign universities we

have;

1. To prepare our students for a

challenging career in industry as

leaders.

2. T o build the spirit of

entrepreneurship in our students in

setting-up world class enterprises

that will inspire our future

generations.

3. To develop our students as

potential teachers who will guide

and mould the future of

education q

two most

necessities in

that order.

H o w e v e r ,

clothing comes immediately after

that.

Clothing is a synonym for textiles

as per layman’s understanding.

And a career in one of the basic

need is here to stay forever. To take

you down the aisle of this kingdom,

I’d like to take up avenues to textile

manufacturing.

Textile manufacturing sector can be

broadly classified into following

subsectors.

1. Production of synthetic

fibres : Advances in Polymer

Chemistry, Fiber Science, and

Chemical Engineering have led to

the development and production of

different types of synthetic fibers.

With introduction of Biotechnology

in this area we get to have newer

and better fibers.

2. Spinning : Conversion of natural

fibers like cotton, wool, silk, flax,

jute etc. into more usable form of

yarn or thread is a vast technology

area by itself. Spinning involves

blend of natural and synthetic fibers

converted into yarns. Currently the

focus is on ecofriendly and energy

efficient technologies.

3. Weaving : Conversion of single

dimensional yarn or thread into two

dimensional woven fabrics was a

leading textile craft in ancient times.

The newer technologies have made

this craft much developed and

versatile. The weaving machines are

known as looms. The automatic

looms have increased production

with severe reduction in fabric

defects. The research is now on three

dimensional weaving machines.

4. Knitting : Conversion of single

thread or yarn into a two dimensional

knit fabric is also an ancient craft.

This ancient craft has also become

a modern technology area with

newer machine technologies like

warp knitting and weft knitting. Well

known knit applications of daily use

are socks, sweaters, t-shirts,

innerwear etc. however, knitting

technology has many sophisticated

applications in areas like medical

textiles.

5. Chemical Processing : Previous

technological sectors produced

textiles whose visual appearance, or

feel or other properties could not be

changed in the manufacturing

processes. It required applications

of chemicals, machines and energy

to make changes in many properties,

changing of visual appearance means

operations like bleaching i.e.

whitening of the textile material or

coloration operations like dyeing and

printing. Finishing technology does

not only change visual appearance

but also feel, or chemical resistance

to micro organisms. It can give

desirable properties like hard or soft

feel, flammability resistance or

resistance to stain etc. Application

of bio technology for ecofriendly

WORK EXPERIENCE :

Without beating around the bush,

I am getting perspective here on the

Educational Reforms to shape our

Indian Educational System:

Reform 1:

The eleventh plan talks about the

Public-Private Partnership (PPP)

which is to encourage private sectors

participation in meeting the needs

of national development.

PPP is already being adopted in

several infrastructure development

sectors, such as airports, railways,

roads, etc and now it plans to extend

it to the human development sectors

such as education and health.

As per this plan schools will be set

up by 2014 and each school will

have about 2,500 students, 1,000 of

who will be from deprived sections

and charged a token fee of Rs. 25/

Rs. 50 per head . The remaining

costs of these students, estimated to

be Rs.1,000 to Rs.1,200 per head

per month, will be reimbursed by

the Union government to the schools.

It is estimated that the government

will have to pay Rs.10,500 crore until

2017. The amount is likely to go up

with escalating prices, in general,

and increasing costs of education, in

particular.

The few important aspects are:

1. It involves a massive transfer of

resources from the exchequer to

private schools.

2. The schools have unlimited

freedom in all aspects of governance,

including specifically the fees to be

charged from the 1,500 students. The

model thus allows the so-called non-

profit institutions to work for, and

actually make, profits.

3. The government has little control

over these schools. Except to insist

that 1,000 students from the deprived

sections be admitted and that they

be charged a certain fee, it cannot

do much.

There is a growing fear that PPP in

education will lead to

commercialization of education and

will degrade our education system

totally. This will invite commercial

companies, whose motives is to

ensures maximum profits with the

objective of the Right to Education

Act that promises free and

compulsory elementary education.

Reform 2 :

“The Right of Children to Free and

Compulsory Education Bill, 2009?

seeking to provide education to

children aged between 6 to 14 years,

was passed in Parliament in August

2009.

The announcement also includes

imposing Hindi language and

suggestion for taking X’th standard

Board Examination as optional with

grading system for assessment in

class room.

There is also a recommendation that

courses are restructured so that

undergraduates have access to all

disciplines which according to me

is a welcome step if it comes through.

However the problem that India

faces is not unemployment, but

unemployability. A study by

McKinsey and the National

Association of Software and Services

Companies a few years ago found

that barely 25% of engineering

graduates are employable. The above

act will derail the Indian economy

growth due to severe reduction of

the % of employable in India.

There is also a debate on the shortage

of 1.2 million trained teachers in the

next five years and the need to fill

this demand by the government if

it is serious enough to implement.

Reform 3 :

Foreign Education Institution

(Regulation of Entry & Operation)

Bill, 2010 empowers foreign

university to set up campuses –

independently or jointly – in India

(Dr. Shweta Gaur’s article in this

In this the foreign institutes will be

allowed to set their own fees like

other private institutions. They will

not be subject to various quotas such

as SC/ST/OBC.

This bill is not through yet and may

not find it easy to get the nod even

of the Rajya Sabha considering the

opposition from the left; BJP may

also join them.

The goals according to me of this

bill are:

a. Increasing capacity of higher

education system

b. Improving the quality of higher

education system

c. Generating forex inflow as

international students may come to

India for study purpose

d. Saving countries forex as Indian

students going abroad for study

purpose may fall in numbers

The general doubt regarding FEI

Bill, 2010 is that Ivy League (top)

processes and energy efficient novel

processes are frontier areas of

development.

6. Non Wovens : Conversion of

fibres and slivers (loose rope like

assembly of fibres) into many useful

domestic and industrial products is

a field of advanced technology in

itself. The consumption of non

woven products is increasing at very

high rate.

These are major textile

manufacturing sectors.

In these technological sectors, there

are certificate courses, diploma, and

degree and post graduate degree

programs offered by some well

known textile institute in India.

What is GW doing to us?

The global warming has happened in the past few years and is evident from the rise in

mean temperature of the earth’s atmosphere.

The global warming has led to increase in mean earth surface temperature and thus

melting of polar ice.

The effect of global warming is very evident on the animal kingdom also. Some animals

have become extinct due to loss of their natural habitat or their inability to evolve to the

rapid changes in the climate.

The effect of global warming can be felt on seasons too. There is shift in season cycle, as

the summers are getting longer than the winters.

The global warming is also responsible for the introduction of some new diseases.

Global warming is also effecting the crop production, as the crops are getting destroyed

by the sudden change in temperatures or sudden on set of rains.

As a matter of fact, because of global warming, the earth’s atmosphere is getting more

unpredictable with heavy rains in the areas, which have scanty rainfall or drought in the

areas, which received good annual rainfall.
