Head Start Regulations

With each lesson, you will see references to sections of the Head Start Regulations. The ref-erences indicate the Head Start Performance Standards addressed in that lesson. To read the actual regulation, please go to

http://eclkc.ohs.acf.hhs.gov/hslc/

A summary of each Head Start requirement addressed in this Teacher’s Guide can be found on the back cover.

The above reference refers to section CFR 45 1304.21 of the Head Start Performance Standards, titled “Education and early childhood development.” Part (a) of this standard is “Child development and education approach for all children.” The (2) refers to the second section of this part which describes requirements for involving parents.

I’m Safe! Walk with Me • Head Start Teacher's Guide © Child Safety Solutions, Inc.

• Why do people walk? (Possible answers: to get some-where; exercise; fun; better for the enviroment; less traffic; it’s healthy; discover new things; time with friends)

• How can kids walk safely? (Possible answers: walk with a grownup and a buddy; obey signs and signals; check the weather; cross streets safely, etc.)

• Have you ever heard of a walking school bus? How would you describe it? (A walking school bus is a group of students who walk to school with one or more grownups. See http://www.walking school-bus.org or http://teach ertip-straining.suite101.com/article.cfm/walking_school_bus_for_students)

have 5 minutes?

Activity ONE:Watch the DVD

Cue up the “Walking School Bus” song in advance. [approximately 1:00 - 2:19 minutes on the DVD.] Watch this portion of the video and ask the children what they like about the walking school bus.

Activity Two: Brainstorm: Why walk?

With the class, brainstorm about reasons to walk. How many can students think of in 1 minute?

Next, brainstorm reasons to ride

in a car. How many can students think of in 1 minute? Compare the lists. Ask for a show of hands. If students have a choice, how many would rather walk? How many would rather ride in a car?

have 15 minutes?

Activity ONE:Be the School Bus

Have the Owl Puppet tell the students to freeze, wherever they are in the classroom Select two students to be the adults who start the walking school bus, and invite one of them to wear the owl puppet. The “adults” walk from student to student and the owl puppet unfreezes them so they can join the walking school bus. Eventually, all the children will have joined the school bus, creating a parade with one of the “adults” walking in front and the other, walking behind.

Activity Two:Sing a Song

Sing “We all Go Walking” to the tune of “The Ants Go Marching.” (See the column to the right.) Have students make up their own motions to go with the song.

Activity three:Make a Map

Brainstorm with the children places they could travel to as a walking school bus and places they would need to ride to. Show students pictures of different areas such as a park, a downtown shopping area, a highway,

a city street, a suburban neighbor-hood, and other environments.

Ask the children to determine whether each picture shows a place they could get to using a walking school bus.

talking points

“We All Go Walking”Sing to the tune of

“The Ants Go Marching”

Words We all go walking two-by-two, hurrah, hurrah. (repeat) We all go walking two-by-two; we follow the rules; we know what to do. And we all go walking safe, with our friends, from the start to the end. Boom, boom, boom, boombah, boom, boom, boom . . .

When we walk, we bring a grown-up, hurrah, hurrah. (repeat) We bring a grown-up and wear bright clothes; we make sure our parents know where we go. And we all go walking safe, with our friends, from the start to the end. Boom, boom, boom, boombah, boom, boom, boom . . .

Before we cross streets, we look all ways, hurrah, hurrah. (repeat) We keep on looking as we cross - left, right, left - we do not stop. And we all go walking safe, with our friends, from the start to the end. Boom, boom, boom, boombah, boom, boom, boom . . .

We pay attention and walk on sidewalks hurrah, hurrah. (repeat) If there’s no sidewalk, stay far to the side. We make sure we go the same way the cars ride. And we all go walking safe, with our friends, from the start to the end. Boom, boom, boom, boombah, boom, boom, boom.
