MORE; TOSC website [ Photo: 2013 TOSC meeting] Former NAD President Don Schneider sent an update on his health after seeing doctors in Washington, D.C. who treated him for the returning cyst on his brain which affected his sight in 2006. He received an MRI and visited with his surgeon and opthalmologist. Both provided good reports. The ophthalmologist who checked his field of vision said that the results could not be better. The neurosurgeon told him that the MRI shows no evidence of foreign material in the brain, and that I could not have had better results to the MRI. "I told him that I was thanking God for the good report and for the work that he (Dr. Aulisi) had done for me," says Schneider. "He told me that it would be impossible to do the work that he does without a lot of prayer." "It seemed to me that I had spent my day with some of the best doctors in Washington, and that God had blessed their work in a way that miracles resulted for me. Once again, as I left the hospital, I drove to the corner looking for the street signs. I thanked God that I could see them," Schneider said. Recent findings indicate that instead of a meat-heavy diet, you're better off focusing onplants--whole grains, legumes, vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and soy.

People who eat a plant-based diet live longer, have less cancer and heart disease, weigh less, and havehealthier diets. They even have a lower carbon footprint. These were the impressive findings from thelandmark study Adventist Health Study-2 (first announced at the International Congress of VegetarianNutrition at Loma Linda University, Loma Linda, CA., February, 2013).

What's so special about the Adventist Health Study? AHS-2 is the culmination of more than 50 years ofresearch conducted at Loma Linda University on members of the Seventh-day Adventist religiousdenomination. The Adventists garnered interest among researchers due to their healthful lifestyle, whichincludes abstinence from cigarettes and alcohol, and high rates of vegetarianism--35 percent are vegetarian, compared to about four percent in the general population.

Within this group is a wide range of dietary patterns, from strict vegan to non-vegetarian, making this group aresearcher's dream--scientists are able to study the effects of dietary patterns without the impact of otherfactors, such as smoking and alcohol.

The first Adventist Health Study (AHS-1, 1974-1988) examined risk of cancer and cardiovascular diseaseamong 34,000 people. AHS-2, with 96,000 Adventist participants, was even more ambitious: Beginning in2002, scientists at Loma Linda University compared the impact of various diet patterns within the same studypopulation, making it one of the most comprehensive diet studies ever conducted. Data was gathered assubjects from all over the U.S. and Canada completed 50-page questionnaires about diet, lifestyle, and health.

    MANY FORMS OF PLANT-BASED DIETS

The definition of a plant-based diet is not rigid; it simply means a diet that focuses on plants. Thus, someonewho eats small amounts of animal foods can fit within this definition, as can someone who is a strict veganand eats no animal foods. What makes AHS-2 unique is that scientists examined the effects of differentplant-based diets within the study population. The five diet patterns in AHS-2 were broken down as follows:

    1. Vegans who eat no animal products

A plant-based diet has impressive benefits, including longer life - chicago... http://www.chicagotribune.com/health/sns-201401210000--tms--premhns...

  • 2. Lacto-ovo vegetarians who eat no meat, but do eat eggs or dairy foods or both

    3. Pesco-vegetarians who eat fish, but other meats one or fewer times per month

    4. Semi-vegetarians who eat meats aside from fish occasionally, but less than weekly

    5. Non-vegetarians who eat meats aside from fish at least one time per week

    PLANT-BASED EATERS EAT DIFFERENTLY

Until this study, there was little knowledge about the daily intake of plant-based eaters. Gary Fraser, PhD,MPH, who led the AHS-2 research team at Loma Linda University, spoke about the study findings--bothpublished and unpublished--at the Congress. He reported that for many years, researchers were convincedthat various types of vegetarian diets were responsible for only moderate differences in health outcome, because there was inadequate research on plant-based diets.

But in AHS-2, "We saw huge differences in food intake among the different vegetarian dietary patterns," saidFraser. Fraser reported many interesting observations about various dietary patterns, including:

-- Plant protein. Soy protein and plant protein intake is much greater in vegans than in non-vegetarians.

-- Omega-3 fatty acids. While the omega-3 fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA(docosahexaenoic acid) intake is much lower among vegans and vegetarians, the plant omega-3 fatty acidALA (alpha-linolenic acid) is higher in this group (about 2 grams per day), and higher levels of EPA andDHA are found in their body fat, suggesting high intake of plant omega-3s may result in higher levels in thebody.

-- Saturated fat. Intake is very low in vegans.

-- Micronutrients. Beta-carotene and vitamin C intake is much higher in vegans. Vitamin B12 intake invegans is low, but they often supplement this nutrient. Iron intake is good for vegans through the diet, as theydon't typically supplement this nutrient.

-- Calcium intake is very low in vegans, but not in lacto-ovo vegetarians.

    PLANT-BASED DIETS OFFER BENEFITS

As the scientists began to compare the health outcomes of the various diet patterns in AHS-2, they sawsomething intriguing. For many health outcomes, a progressively beneficial relationship was observedbetween the dietary patterns, with vegan providing the best benefit compared with non-vegetarian, followedby lacto-ovo vegetarian, pesco-vegetarian, and semi-vegetarian.

In other words, the more plant-based the diet, the greater the benefit. Fraser presented the following findings:

    1. Weight. A progressive weight increase was seen from a vegan diet toward a non-vegetarian diet. "Theaverage body mass index (BMI) for vegans was 23.6, lacto-ovo vegetarians 25.7, pesco-vegetarians 26.3,semi-vegetarians 27.3, and non-vegetarians 28.8," said Fraser (Journal of the Academy of Nutrition andDietetics, December 2013). BMI over 25 is overweight; over 30 is obese.

  • 2. Cardiovascular disease. The same trend was observed for cardiovascular disease markers, such as levels ofcholesterol, and incidence of high blood pressure and metabolic syndrome, with the vegan dietary patternoffering the lowest risk compared with non-vegetarian (Diabetes Care, 2012).

    3. Type 2 Diabetes. Prevalence of type 2 diabetes among vegans (2.9 percent) and lacto-ovo vegetarians (3.2percent) was half that of non-vegetarians (7.6 percent), reported Fraser, who also noted that the same trendprevailed in fasting blood glucose levels.

    4. Inflammation. A similar trend, progressing from vegan to non-vegetarian, was observed for C-reactiveprotein, a measure of inflammation, which is considered a root of chronic disease.

    5. Cancer. Fraser reported, "For overall cancer, all vegetarians (vegans plus lacto-ovo vegetarians) had an 8percent reduction in risk, and vegans did best of all. For gastrointestinal cancers, vegetarians as a group had24 percent reduction in risk, and in particular lacto-ovo vegetarians did the best. For respiratory systemcancers, the vegetarian group had a 23 percent reduction in risk. In female cancers, vegans did the best inreduced risk."

    6. Longevity. "Death rates rise across the dietary groups, from vegans to non-vegetarians," said Fraser. Therewas a 12 percent reduction in risk of all-cause mortality in all vegetarians combined versus non-vegetarians,with a reduction in risk of 15 percent in vegans compared with non-vegetarians, nine percent in lacto-ovovegetarians, 19 percent in pesco-vegetarians, and eight percent in semi-vegetarians (JAMA Intern Med,2013). Carbon footprint.

Vegetarian diets are also more sustainable, according to Joan Sabate, MD, DrPh, Chair of Nutrition at LomaLinda University. According to a life cycle assessment applied to the AHS-2 data, Sabate reported that thegreenhouse gas emissions for a vegan diet are 41.7 percent lower compared with non-vegetarians; lacto-ovovegetarians are 27.8 percent lower, pescatarians are 23.8 percent lower, and semivegetarians are almost 20percent lower.

    7. Healthy behaviors. Compared to non-vegetarians, vegans and vegetarians watch less television, sleepmore, and consume more fruits, vegetables, and low-glycemic foods and less saturated fat.

Southern Adventist Day Of ServiceMore schools are making sure their students take part in community service today. Southern AdventistUniversity is in it's twenty first year of helping. Students AND faculty showed up at the Samaritan Center in Ooltewah, Tennessee today. Kenyon Findley, theevent coordinator and Southern Adventist University Junior says that it's a way for them to take time out oftheir schedule to help others. It's fun to get out into the community to serve. Not only getting to know some ofthe people I go to classes with every single day but knowing that there's a bigger purpose and helping thecommunity I don't get to see on a regular basis. It was a busy day for all the students. Boxes of food need to be shelved and checked at the food pantry. Others eased the huge task of sorting clothes and home items. Donn Leatherman, SAU Professor of Biblical Language and Biblical Studies, says, Many people don't realizethis but donations to the Samaritan Center don't cover very much of their budget. More of their budget comesfrom the thrift store, if I understand this correctly, than from anything else. So when people come in here andbuy things, that enables them to carry on the other activities they're involved in, so, it really does support thecommunity a great deal. The Samaritan Center is the only social services agency in Ooltewah. They provided help to over threethousand people last year.

Today, volunteers say serving on Martin Luther King Day reminds them of the bigger purpose. Leathermanadds, His life was focused on helping other people. So, helping other people is really a way to commemoratewhat he did instead of just knocking off for a day and taking it easy. MLK Day is the only federal holiday dedicated as a day of service.

  • Loma Linda is a Blue Zone, noted for health and long lifeBy Canan Tasci, Inland Valley Daily BulletinSaturday, January 18, 2014 PasadenaStarNews.com

LOMA LINDA >> Alice Robbins is not about to tell anyone howto live their life, but it wouldnt hurt anyone to take note.

On Saturday, the Cincinnati-born vegetarian Seventh-dayAdventist will turn 100.

The centenarian, who lives in Linda Valley Villa in Loma Linda, credits her longevity to a healthy lifestyle: She doesnt drink, eats fruits and vegetables, limits her sugar intake and

    exercises daily.

I walk up and down the halls and theres a man that says, Hey, theres a speed limit here,Robbins said laughing vibrantly at the thought of moving fast.

While lifestyle and luck certainly have played a role, Robbins as a Loma Linda resident also lives inone of five places in the world identified as Blue Zone Areas places where people areparticularly healthy and tend to live longer. The other four Blue Zones Areas are Karia, Greece;Nicoya, Costa Rica; Okinawa, Japan; and Sardinia, Italy.

In 2004, Dan Buettner, a self-styled explorer, educator and author, teamed with NationalGeographic to identify places where people lived significantly longer, according to BlueZones.com.Buettner published the book Blue Zones: Lessons for living longer from the people whove livedthe longest, which includes recipes, lifestyle formulas and details nine specific characteristic thathelped in prolonging life in these areas.

Experts say the secret in Loma Linda is the high concentration of Seventh-day Adventists, andtheir tendency toward healthier eating and lifestyles.

Looking at the implications of a vegetarian diet on longevity, there is data that suggestsvegetarians of various types live longer than non-vegetarians, said Paul Lyons, senior associatedean for education at UC Riversides School of Medicine.

According to a study published last summer in JAMA Internal Medicine, vegetarian dietary patternsmay be associated with longer lifespans.

In the study, titled Vegetarian Dietary Patterns and Mortality in Adventist Health, Dr. Michael J.Orlich, of Loma Linda University and colleagues examined mortality in a group of 73,308Seventh-day Adventist men and women. They found that the vegetarian groups tended to be older, more highly educated and more likely to be married. They also drank less alcohol, smoked less, exercised more and were thinner.

    And they lived longer.

Im not a vegetarian, but the amount of vegetables you put on your plate is more important, and itkeeps us healthy, said Dr. Sylvie Wellausen, an assistant clinical professor in the Department ofPreventative Medicine at Loma Linda. I think humans, looking at our diets and looking at our DNA,

  • what we require is more vegetables.

Lyons said we dont need Blue Zone information to tell us that being active, not smoking and eatingbetter is good solid medical advice.

That doesnt make it any less challenging for people to adopt those life style changes, he said.

Not to mention eating healthier is also more expensive and those in a low economic status tend toeat less healthier foods because they are cheaper, said Dr. Patricia Shakhshir is an assistantprofessor and clinical instructor in the College of Graduate Nursing at Western University of HealthSciences.

And especially in crime-ridden areas it would be difficult for them to go out and be active becausetheyre afraid of drive by shooting, she said.

Wellausen helped start the Loma Linda Health Coalition in the summer of 2011 to protect their BlueZone community and help their local government become more sensitive to public health.

The group has started farmers markets and opposed the McDonalds on Barton Road in 2011.

Though the coalition lost the battle for the restaurant to be built, the Loma Linda City Councilpassed an ordinance on Sept. 24, 2011, banning any more drive-through or fast-food restaurants.

The ratio of healthy foods versus unhealthy foods is important, and in California thats 4 to 1,Wellausen said. And Japan may lose its Blue Zone status because of the amount of food that isentering into that area.

Residents of Linda Valley Villa will find no fast food in their dining options. On Thursday the homeslunch menu included veggie burger, french fries, baked beans and a pistachio torte, and for dinner, celery soup, pizza, green salad and pears for dessert.

At Linda Valley Villa, we are proud to support a community that represents the Blue Zone at itsfinest. Last year three of our centenarians served as the grand marshals for the Loma LindaHoliday Parade, said Joanne Lapointe, the homes spokeswoman in an email. Our residents aregreat examples that a vegetarian diet, exercise and strong spiritual support result not only inlongevity, but in a life lived with vibrancy.

To help celebrate Robbins 100th birthday next week the staff at Valley Villa have planned a littleparty for her.

    Her wish?

My wish is to live a little bit longer, she said.

Adventist Health employees can dine at two vegetarian restaurants on campus, obtaindiscounted gym memberships and compete with one another for iPads in fitness and culinarychallenges.

These and other initiatives are features of the Portland-based health systems LivingWell corporatewellness program. And they helped Adventist to tie for the 12th spot on the 2014 list of Healthiest100 Workplaces in America compiled by Healthiest Employers.

There are a lot of things were doing that we believe are really moving employees forward, saidEd Hoover, Adventists wellness manager.

Adventist offers biometric screenings, to be sure, but it also takes a holistic approach to wellness.

PORTLAND -- Sleep is a hot commodity in our busy lives and for many of us hitting the snooze button is part of the morning routine, butsome health experts say that might not be healthy.

I have three alarms and three snooze buttons, said CJ Anderson, Getting up in the morning can be a 60 to 90 minute process.

At Portlands Adventist Medical Center sleep technicians have a warning about abusing the snooze.

Its actually interfering with the REM or rapid eye movement cycle and interrupted sleep is as bad as no sleep, explained supervisorJamie Curry.

She says often the morning hours bring the most rejuvenating sleep so its best to sleep as long as you can without the interruptions of thesnooze alarm.

If youre adding twenty minutes of snooze time its best to just add that to your time for the first and only alarm.

Bottom line is sleep in as late as you can, remarked Curry. The alarm should only go off when you need to get up.

If its impossible for you to get your feet on the floor with just a single alarm you might want to consider a sleep study.

You could have a sleep disorder thats making you feel extra fatigued, she said.

Adventist Health technicians can collect data while you sleep at home.

If you have trouble waking up, Curry also suggested putting your alarm across the room so you have to get out of bed and turn it off. Shealso said put a light on right away and make sure the room is warm at wake up.

It will make it easier to get those feet on the floor, concluded Curry.

One of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is prophecy. This gift is an identifying mark of the remnant church and was manifested in the ministry of Ellen. G. White. As the Lord's messenger, her writings are a continuing and authoritative source of truth which provide for the church comfort, guidance, instruction, andcorrection. They also make clear that the Bible is the standard by which all teaching and experience must be tested.

And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will seevisions. 29 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days.

Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this toyou; listen carefully to what I say. These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning! No, this is what was spoken by the prophetJoel: 'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your oldmen will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. I will show wondersin the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood beforethe coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'

In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whomhe appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of hisbeing, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspringthose who keep God's commands and hold fast theirtestimony about Jesus.

At this I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, Don't do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers and sisters who hold to thetestimony of Jesus. Worship God! For it is the Spirit of prophecy who bears testimony to Jesus.

    how to Give Bible Studies

As Seventh-day Adventist Christians, we believe in the soon coming of Jesus. God has given our church an enormous amount of knowledge on the prophetic books of Daniel and Revelation that speak specifically of our times. With this knowledge also comes responsibility. We are told: In a special sense Seventh-day Adventists have been set in the world as watchmen and light bearers. To them has been entrusted the last warning for a perishing world. On them is shining wonderful light from the word of God. They have been given a work of the most solemn importthe proc-lamation of the first, second, and third angels messages. There is no other work of so great importance. They are to allow nothing else to absorb their attention (Testimonies, vol. 9, p. 19).

Early Adventists took this commission seriously. In those early years, preaching and distributing literature widely were the two primary means of spreading the message. However, it was not un-til 1883, 20 years after the church was officially organized, that the idea of giving Bible studies from house to house was introduced. It happened almost by acci-dent.

In May 1883, S. N. Haskell, the founder of the Tract and Missionary Societies, was preaching at a camp meeting in southern California, when suddenly a severe storm arose. The thunder was so loud the people could no longer hear him. At that moment Haskell had an idea. Leaving the platform, he walked out into the middle of the tent and gathered the crowd around him. Rather than resume his preaching, he gave out texts of scripture to be read by different people as he asked questions. In this way the first question-and-answer Bible study was created. When Ellen White, who was also at the camp meeting, learned of what Haskell had done, she told him that she had seen in vision hundreds of church members visiting families and giving Bible

studies in this very way. She later wrote:To all who are working with Christ I would say, Wherever you

can gain access to the people by the fireside, improve your oppor-tunity. Take your Bible, and open before them its great truths...The presentation of Christ in the family, by the fireside, and in small gatherings in private houses, is often more successful in winning souls to Jesus than are sermons delivered in the open air, to the moving throng, or even in halls or churches (Gospel Work-ers, p. 193).

The plan of holding Bible-readings was a heaven-born idea. There are many, both men and women, who can engage in this branch of missionary labor. Workers may thus be developed who will become mighty men of God. By this means the word of God has been given to thousands; and the workers are brought into personal contact with people of all nations and tongues. The Bible is brought into families, and its sacred truths come home to the conscience. Men are entreated to read, examine, and judge for themselves, and they must abide the responsibility of receiving

or rejecting the divine enlightenment. God will not permit this precious work for Him to go unrewarded. He will crown with success every humble effort made in His name (Gospel Work-ers, p. 192).

Giving Bible studies in the home is a heaven-born idea because:

It develops workers who will become mighty men and women of God. It is a work that will not go unrewarded. It leads people to an individual search of the Word of God.

It is one of the most successful ways to win souls to Jesus. The importance of this work cannot be underesti-mated.

There are families who will never be reached by the truth of Gods Word unless His servants enter

their homes, and by earnest ministry, sanctified by the endorsement of the Holy Spirit, break

down the barriers. As the people see that these workers are messengers of mercy, the ministers of grace, they are ready to listen to the

words spoken by them (Evangelism, pp. 435, 436).

In my experience as a Bible worker, I have real-ized that there are many who are not ready to step

foot in an Adventist church or attend an evangelistic

series, but these same ones will accept an invitation to study the Bible in the non-threatening environment of a home. Here as they open Gods Word and discover its beautiful message to their lives, their hearts are softened, their conscience is pricked, and their de-sire to learn is awakened. It is only then that I can invite them to church.

God is calling you to give a Bible study! It is a calling directly from God, for He has ordained this most important of work. Do you desire to become a mighty man or woman of God? Then give Bible readings and you will develop into a mighty worker for God. God rewards this work and it will result in winning souls to the truth. Here are some tips for giving effective, engaging, successful Bible studies:

    1. PREPAREThis preparation comes in two forms: personal preparation and

study/research preparation. Prepare your heart by spending time with God, asking Him to use you and speak through you. Ask God to reveal anything in your heart that might be separating you from Himany sin that could prevent Him from blessing your study. Plead with God for the person you will be studying with, asking God to go before you and prepare the way. Find promises to claim related to this study.

Next, prepare for your study: Select the topic you will be studying. Write your own study or review instructor notes written by

another. Be familiar with the main thoughts to bring out after each passage.

Research anything that is not clear to you so you are comfort-able with the material.

Think of questions that might be asked on that topic and how you might answer them.

Make copies of text guides (a list of the verses in the study) or other handouts for your students.

Gather together any visual aids, handouts, lessons, or anything else you might need to take with you to the study.

You can give a Bible study that includes only texts and a few summary statements, but a study that is memorable and engaging is a study that is enhanced. Think of things you can add to your study to make it practical and relative to their situation. Also use freely any of these items:

Illustrations Storiespersonal or other Drawings or diagrams An occasional short video clip, magazine article, etc. Many people are visual learners, and any time you can help

them to see what you are talking about or relate it to the world in which they live, the more likely they are to understand what you are saying, remember it, and personally apply it.

    2. CONFIRM THE APPOINTMENTIf you are just beginning this study, call a day in advance to just

confirm the time of the appointment. People tend to forget new

things in their schedule unless they have written them down and are good at looking at their calendar. It is still best to call and make sure nothing has changed. This will prevent you from being disap-pointed by a no-show.

    3. ARRIVE ON TIMEDont be late. If you are stuck in traffic or have some other un-

expected delay, call ahead and let them know you are coming and your approximate arrival time. This is common courtesy.

    4. STUDY AHEADUpon arrival, greet the person and follow their cues as to wheth-

er to take off your shoes, place your coat somewhere, and where to sit. After everyone is settled, spend a few minutes becoming better acquainted or hearing about their week. You want your socializa-tion to be at the beginning of the visit rather than at the end. Try not to spend more than 10 minutes on this.

When you can, say, Well, are we ready to begin our study? We have an exciting topic to study! Pull out your notes and place them inside or beside your Bible so you can easily glance at them during your study. Begin the study with prayer. Maybe take a prayer request. Ask the Holy Spirit to be the teacher and guide during your study.

  • Southwestern Union Record14

    7. GIVE THE STUDYDuring the study, help your student find the Bible text. Give di-

rections for finding certain books, especially if they are unfamiliar with the order. Wait until everyone is present before reading. Ask if the student would feel comfortable reading. You may wish to take turns reading. Summarize the verse after it is read. Point out key words and explain unfamiliar words or phrases. Frequently ask, Does that make sense? If you get a puzzled expression, ex-plain again.

    8. ENGAGE YOUR STUDENTDuring the study you can engage your student by asking ques-

tions: Have you ever been in a desperate situation like Daniel and

needed to call upon God? What do you think this text means? Have you experienced this in your life? What do you see happening in the world that shows this text

to be true? Why do you think God said that? Then listen to their answer. As far as possible affirm their an-

swers. If they dont see what you are hoping they have gained from the text, make a possible suggestion:

Do you think it is possible that .? What I get out of this text is .Other ways to engage your student would be to: Allow the student to ask questions of you. Invite the student to read some of the Scriptures. Help the student to visualize or imagine what is being described

    in the text.

    5. GIVE AN OVERVIEWYour introduction to the study should include a short preview

of the study or some important question that will be answered. This helps to pique interest and show the importance of studying that topic. A story or illustration can be a great way to start off. If you are going to be covering a potentially controversial study, such as the Sabbath or state of the dead, it is best not to say in the in-troduction something that would make them defensive from the start. You want to lead up to important points that might be new.

    6. FOLLOW A METHOD OF PRESEN-TATION

Method No. 1: Fill out the lesson together. Easiest method for giving a Bible study. Each of you have a blank copy of the lesson guide and you read

through it, answering the questions as you go. Good for people who struggle with reading comprehension or

get easily distracted. Allows you to expound on the questions and answers as you go

through it. Could seem elementary for more advanced Bible students.Method No. 2: Review the completed lesson. Student has completed the lesson during the week and your

study time is to review the highlights, answer questions, and make an appeal.

Study can be completed in usually less than 30 minutes. Instructor pulls out key points from the lesson and finds out if

the student understood them. Allows more freedom of discussion of the points in the lesson

because there is not the hurry of completing the lesson. Potentially the person may come to the study with objections

or major questions if the topic of the lesson was controversial (such as the Sabbath, death, etc.).

Method No. 3: Study the topic using only the Bible and the help of instructors notes.

Instructor introduces the topic and takes the student on a study of the Scriptures without the use of a printed lesson.

Instructor may use handwritten or typewritten notes or a chain referenced, marked Bible to aid him/her in the presentation.

Provides the most flexibility by allowing the instructor to add or change verses, bring out specific points, and tailor the study to the students needs.

The instructor tends to better learn and understand the topic using this method as the study is given in his or her own words.

Appeals can be personal and tailored to the individual rather than being ambiguous and generic as sometimes they are in printed lessons.

Works well for any group size. Participants only need to have a Bible.

Printed lessons or handouts can be distributed at the end of the study for additional study or as a homework assignment to review what has just been studied.

experience this special day with Jesus by coming to church with me this Saturday?

Incorporate their decision into your closing prayer. It is often nice to include yourself in that decision if it is something you want to make a recommitment to as well. If the student has made a ma-jor decision that evening and you think they are comfortable with you, you may want to ask them to have the closing prayer and tell God of their decision. This can be a very powerful moment!

Here are good examples of closing prayers: Jesus, we thank you for your Word. And this evening Judy and I

have decided that we want to be spend time in your Word each day getting to know you. Help us to find the time each day to do that.

Jesus, we have seen in our study that there has been a contro-versy between Christ and Satan since the very beginning. Tom and I choose to be on your side in this battle. Give us the wis-dom to daily choose your ways.

Jesus, we thank You that You gave us the gift of the weekly Sab-bath because You desire to build a relationship with us. Bless Steve as He seeks to deepen his relationship with You by begin-ning to keep Your holy Sabbath day.

    11. FOLLOW UPAfter the study you want to leave soon, so as to not take away

from what the Holy Spirit has just accomplished in that study. Give them any handouts related to that topic or a supplemental

lesson for them to study on their own during the week. Here are some lessons sets you can use:

Storacle lessons from Amazing Facts Amazing Facts Study Guides (Nos. 1-27)

Prophecy Seminar lessons by Seminars Unlimited Search for Certainty lessons by It Is Written Prophecies of Hope lessons by Gary Gibbs

Match the lesson with the topic studied that day. This will allow the student to have some-thing to study until you meet again, keeping them in Gods Word. You can review it briefly the next

week.Discuss when you are meeting again and set up

your next appointment. Wish your student a great week and leave! After you

leave, pray and thank God for the way He blessed the study and pray that the Holy Spirit will continue to work and bring conviction to his or her heart.

Have the student share a brief story or experience that relates to what you are studying.

Some individuals can get carried away as they share their stories and experiences. Listen for a while and if it looks like things are getting long, say something like, That is an interesting experience you had and it really illustrates what we were just talking about. Lets look and see what this other Bible text has to say on that. And get them back into the study!

    9. SUMMARIZEThroughout the study, summarize what has been learned so far.

If your notes are divided into sections, its a good idea to make a summary statement at the end of each section and then transition to the next section. This allows them to not forget what has been studied thus far and to see how it connects with what they will be studying next.

At the end of the study, summarize the key points. This will help connect any dots still unconnected. Ask:

Can you see from our study of the signs that Jesus coming is very soon?

Do you see that while Gods justice must destroy sinners who cling to sin, His love will not allow them to burn in hell fire for-ever?

Is it clear to you that the Bible method for baptism is immer-sion?

    10. MAKE AN APPEALRemember, never end a Bible study without making an

appeal. This is simply asking them to make some com-mitment based on the study. It can be very short and simple. Try to make the appeal practical. Here are ex-amples of a poor and a good appeal:

Poor appeal: Are you thankful Jesus is coming again? Then, Lets pray.

Good appeal: Mary, do you want to be ready when Jesus comes again? Are you wiling to make a commit-ment to spend more time in prayer and Bible study every week so you can deepen your relationship with God?

Here are other examples of a good appeal:

Judy, is it your desire to spend time each day studying the Bible?

Tom, in this great contro-versy between Christ and Satan, is it your desire to be on the winning side with Jesus?

Steve, weve learned today the importance of the seventh-day Sab-bath. Would you like to
