4 I S A C B . O R G

On behalf of the entire Executive Council of the International Society for Cardiovascular Biology (ISACB) and the local organizers of our 15th Biennial Meeting, welcome to beautiful Banff! We are pleased to be holding this meeting in such a wonderful location. Thanks to Dr. Tina Rinker for proposing this venue to the ISACB Executive Council and for following through as Meeting Chair and Local Organizing Committee Chair, leading her team of volunteers in putting together a great meeting. We owe our gratitude, too, to Dr. Glenn Gaudette for serving as Chair of the Program Committee and, with his team of topical “Leads”, fabricating an excellent, enriching program. We have implemented a lot of fresh, new ideas for the 15th Biennial Meeting that I hope provides you with an overall rewarding experience here in Banff.

I have been honored to serve as the Society’s eighth president and I am very proud of the things that the leadership of the Society has accomplished during my two terms. We have positioned ourselves to remain the go-to, small professional society that encompasses clinical translation of cutting edge cardiovascular science and technology. Reflective of this mission is the theme of this year’s meeting: “Transforming Approaches to Cardiovascular Health and Disease: Enabling Biology and Engineering in Prevention, Diagnosis, Therapeutics and Devices”. I look forward to working with incoming President, Dr. Elena Aikawa, the ISACB Executive Council and the membership in keeping ISACB on a firm trajectory.

We in ISACB have always prided ourselves in effectively facilitating communication among clinicians and academic- and industry-based scientists and engineers, and in providing a forum where trainees at all levels can meaningfully interact with established investigators in the field. I encourage you to use the networking opportunities that have been programmed into the meeting to get to know new colleagues, re-establish ties with old friends, and plant seeds for new collaborations that will lead to yet more discoveries to impact cardiovascular health.

It is altogether fitting that the Alexander Whitehill Clowes, M.D. Endowed Chair in Vascular Surgery Dr. Benjamin Starnes will be giving the “Dr. Alexander Clowes Memorial Lecture” at this meeting. We lost Alec Clowes, a founding ISACB leader and ISACB’s second president last year at a much-too-young age. Those of us who attended the 14th Biennial ISACB Meeting in 2014 will recall the youthful exuberance with which Alec delivered that meeting’s keynote lecture. We also lost Dr. Allan Callow, the Society’s first president, who also addressed the delegates at the 2014 ISACB Meeting. We will remain indebted to both of these gentle giants in our field.

I would like to acknowledge the support of all of our sponsors, particularly our two Gold Sponsors, Gore and Medtronic.

Finally, I want to have in this meeting program an indication of our Society’s deep gratitude to Dr. Steve Schmidt, our outgoing Secretary-Treasurer. I use “outgoing” in the previous sentence with a certain degree of sadness as Steve has been the lifeblood of ISACB for most of its existence. His dedication can be measured in many ways, with numerous stories of personal time and even financial investment. Steve has decided to step down as our long-time Secretary-Treasurer after this meeting, but will still serve on our 2016-2018 Executive Council. Steve, thank you from all of us for your dedication and for keeping the ISACB ship steering true!

Collegially,

David A. Vorp, Ph.D. ISACB President

5ISACB’S 15TH BIENNIAL MEETING I PROGRAM I BANFF, CANADA I SEPTEMBER 7-10, 2016

Welcome to Banff and the 15th Biennial Meeting of the International Society for Applied Cardiovascular Biology! We are glad to see you, and know you will enjoy both the conference and the spectacular Canadian Rockies! This is the first time ISACB has come to Canada and we are proud to serve as hosts for this year’s event. The event is held at the Banff Centre, a wonderful place to foster engaging conversations, inspire creativity and relax. It is walking distance to the town of Banff, which offers shopping, recreation and dining. Banff is truly unique in the world and the birthplace of the Canada’s first national park. Be sure to take the time and enjoy all this fantastic setting has to offer. I want to thank David Vorp, the ISACB Program Committee, and the ISACB Executive Committee for their support and help in conference organization. I would also like to thank the Local Organizing Committee, Catherine Barrett and Lisa Bowlin, the host institution the University of Calgary, the Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta, the Centre for Bioengineering Research and Education, and the Biomedical Engineering Graduate Program.

Best wishes,

Tina Rinker Local Organizing Committee Chair

IN-MEMORIAM

Dr. Allan CallowWe regret to announce the sad news that our friend and colleague Dr. Allan Callow, MD, PhD, passed away on December 22, 2015.

Allan was key to the inception of ISACB in 1987 and served as the Society’s founding President from 1989-1992. At the April, 2014 ISACB Biennial meeting in Cleveland, he was honored by having the ISACB Young Investigator Awards named after him.

We are indebted to Allan and will miss him greatly.

Dr. Alec ClowesIt is with great sadness that we announce the news that our friend and colleague, Dr. Alexander (Alec) Whitehall Clowes, passed away on July 7, 2015.

Alec was a key contributor to ISACB since its inception in 1987 and served as the Society’s 2nd president from 1992-1994. At the April, 2014 ISACB Biennial Meeting in Cleveland, he was honored as the featured keynote speaker.

We will remain indebted to the vast knowledge left behind by Alec and will greatly miss the amazing human being that he was.

Developing a TEDMED-Style Research Presentation Organizers: Jane Grande-Allen, PhD (Rice University) and Dianna Milewicz, MD, PhD (University of Texas Medical School)

Have you been inspired by the personal, compelling nature of TED and TEDMED talks? Do you wish you could present your work in a way that connects with your audience and distills your work into an uplifting story with lasting impact? Think how helpful this skill would be in explaining your research to your friends, family, potential employers, or a funding agency! The compelling nature of TED and TEDMED talks is not due to the inherent skills of the speaker. These skills are learned, but you have to start somewhere.

In this interactive workshop, trainees will take their presentation / research concepts through a transformation using the principles and instructions given to actual TEDMED and TED speakers, as described in the new book “TED Talks: The Official TED Guide to Public Speaking”. This interactive workshop will cover how to shape your message and how to deliver this message effectively on stage. At the end of the workshop, trainees will have the opportunity to present key aspects of their message.

PRE-MEETING WORKSHOPS

These workshops require separate registration from the regular conference.

This workshop brings together a great team of experts to present current concepts, techniques and applications in ‘omics and epigenetics. Current technologies, advanced biomarkers, mechanobiology influences, applications in cancer and cardiovascular systems, and factors important for development of new technologies and successful translation to the clinic will be included, culminating in a presentation by Dianna Milewicz.

Dianna M. Milewicz, M.D. Ph.D., is the President George H.W. Bush Chair of Cardiovascular Medicine, Director of the Division of Medical Genetics and Vice-Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. She completed her postgraduate training in internal medicine, specialized further in medical genetics, and forged a career in translational studies focused on genetic predisposition to vascular diseases. She has received numerous honors and awards for her research, including the Antoine Marfan Award, the Doris Duke Distinguished Clinical Scientist Award, and the University of Texas Presidential Scholars Award for Excellence in Research. She has been inducted into the American Society of Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. Dr. Milewicz has been the Director of the M.D./Ph.D. Program offered jointly between the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and MD Anderson Cancer Center institutions for over 10 years and is Chair of the GREAT MD/PhD Section Committee.
