Review NotebookReview NotebookThe 2002 Terp Honorees• The 2002 season was one of major improvements andachievements for the Maryland women’s soccer team thisseason. Here are a few of the notable events and moments.

• Maryland head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski be-came just the third woman and the youngest person everto be inducted in the National Soccer Hall of Fame on Oct.14. Higgins-Cirovski continued to earn the accolades asshe was named ACC Coach of the Year for the second timein four seasons.

• The Terps were honored with five individual player hon-ors at the ACC Awards Banquet held on Nov. 6 in Tallahas-see, Fla., as Katie Ludwig was named to the All-ACC firstteam. Redshirt freshman Kimmy Francis and freshmanMallory Mahar were both named to the All-ACC secondteam. Mahar and leading scorer Ali Andrzejewski werenamed to the ACC All-Freshman team, also.

• Ludwig was named to the NSCAA All Mid-Atlantic sec-ond team and Mahar was named to the third team.

• Mahar was named as a finalist for the Soccer Buzz Na-tional Freshman of the Year. She was honored as the Soc-cer Buzz Mid-Atlantic Region Freshman of the Year. Ma-har was also named a first team Soccer Buzz FreshmanAll-American as well as earning a spot on the All Mid-Atlantic First Team and All Mid-Atlantic Freshman Team.Joining Mahar on the All Mid-Atlantic First Team was Lud-wig. On the All Mid-Atlantic Freshman Team, Mahar wasjoined by Francis and Andrzejewski. Francis was alsonamed a Soccer Buzz Third Team Freshman All-American.

On The Field Milestones• The Terps won 13 games in 2002, finishing 13-8-1, forits most wins since 1996, when the team went 19-5-2.Maryland posted 11 regular-season victories, the most ithas garnered since went 11-7-1 in 1997.

• The 13 wins is the highest total for coach Higgins-Cir-ovski in her four years at Maryland, her previous best wasin her first year when she went 11-10-1. She also equaledher career high for wins a season in 13, which came in herfinal year at George Washington, when she went 13-6-2.

• The Terps scored 47 goals in 2002, nearly doubling the to-tal of 24 last season. The total was the most since they scored55 in 1998 and the most under Higgins-Cirovski.

• On the field, Maryland advanced to the NCAA Tournamentfor the seventh time in eight years and reached the secondround for the first time since 1999 with a 1-0 victory overAmerican in the first round at Ludwig Field on Nov. 15. TheTerps fought valiantly but los, 2-1, to eventual NCAA Women’sCollege Cup participant Penn State in a rain-soaked, frigidbattle on Nov. 17 at Ludwig Field.

• Maryland advanced to the ACC Tournament semifinals forthe first time in three years in 2002, as they knocked off hostFlorida State, 4-2 on Nov. 7, before a television audience onSunshine Network. All four goals in the win came from fresh-men: Ali Andrzejewski, Simone Dekker, Kimmy Francisand Mallory Mahar.

• The Terps had their first-ever positive result against the sto-ried North Carolina women’s soccer program, as they tiedthem 1-1 on Nov. 1. In tied the No. 2 Heels, the Terps also pickedup their best ever result against a team ranked in the top twoin the nation. The highest ranked team Maryland has everbeaten was No. 4 Penn State on Aug. 29, 2000.

• Maryland won at Clemson for the first-time in school his-tory after five previous losses at Riggs Field dating to 1994.The Oct. 20 win by the score of 3-2, was a dramatic one asjunior captain Jen Biscoe scored with 6:33 left in regulationas her diving header off a rebound from a Katie Ludwig shotbeat the Tiger keeper for the major victory.

Maryland Kicks Offense

Into High Gear• Maryland’s offense continued its high-scoring pace in 2002with 47 goals in 22 matches for a 2.14 goals per game average.That total is nearly double the entire season total for all of 2001,when the Terps tallied 24 goals in 19 games (1.26 per game).Maryland surpassed that 24-goal mark in the ninth game ofthis season in the 3-2 win over Duke on Sept. 27.

• Of the 47 goals this season, 24 - more than half - camefrom freshmen as ACC All-Freshman team honoree Ali An-drzejewski led the Terps with nine goals after scoring vs.Florida State in the ACC Quarterfinals. Fellow ACC All-Fresh-man team member and All-ACC second team award winnerMallory Mahar had five goals this season - all on headers.Lightning-fast freshman Simone Dekker netted six goals,inclduing the final goal of the season against Penn State inthe NCAA second round. Second-team All-ACC honoreeKimmy Francis had four goals in her first college season asa redshirt-freshman after sitting out all of last season.

• The Terps were 12-1 overall in 2002 when they scored thefirst goal of the game after Kimmy Francis scored the onlygoal of the Terps’ 1-0 win over American in the NCAA firstround. Maryland won its last seven games in which it hasscored first. The only loss came to then-No. 15 Notre Dame onSept. 15.

• Maryland is 6-0 in games which they lead at halftime asthey did against FSU in the ACC Tournament, leading 2-1 af-ter the first 45 minutes.

• Maryland had eight players with 10 or more points afterhaving just two last season.

• The attack was led by All-ACC first teammer Katie Ludwigalong with Ali Andrzejewski and Audra Poulin.

• Ludwig was the difference in the Terps’ win at Clemson onOct. 20, as she assisted the game-winning goal and scored thegame-tying goal, both on great individual efforts. She finishedwith 16 points to stand third on the team in scoring with sixgoals and four assists, all of which are career highs.

• Poulin went on a torrid stretch in mid-October, scoring fourgoals in a three-game span. She finished second on the teamwith a career-high eight goals and was also second in pointswith 19. She posted her first multi-goal game against GeorgeMason on Oct. 16, with two goals in the first 16 minutes. Poulincame into the season with just three goals in her first two sea-sons.

• Poulin was named to the Soccer America and Soccer BuzzTeams of the Week on Oct. 21 for her performances.

• For Poulin and Ludwig, the goal totals are more than eachplayer had scored in all of last season. Ludwig had two goals in2001, although she did play most of the year on defense andPoulin had three goals last season -- the first three of her career.

• The freshman sensation, Andrzejewski led the club with 20points after scoring her team-high ninth goal against FloridaState in the ACC Quarterfinal.

• The assists also came at a fast rate with all of the goals. JuniorJenny Biscoe led the team in helpers with nine, while KimmyFrancis had eight to finish second on the squad. Biscoe’s nineassists ranks as the fourth all-time single season assist mark atMaryland. Francis’ eight ranks tied for seventh in a single-sea-son.

• Junior Jenny Biscoe posted 13 points as she assisted a stringof three consecutive goals spanning the ACC Quarterfinal win overFlorida State and the NCAA first round win over American. She hadtwo goals, scoring her second goal of the year at James Madison.Biscoe scored her first goal of the season notching the game-win-ner at Clemson (10/20). Earlier this season, she tied a school-recordwith a three-assist performance at Rutgers on Sept. 6.

• Redshirt Freshman Kimmy Francis had a career-high fourpoints as she added to her team-high assist total of eight with apair against James Madison on Oct. 28. Francis notched her sec-ond goal of the season on a free kick and finished fourth on theteam in scoring with 16 points. She scored her third goal againstFlorida State in the ACC Tournament. Her fourth career goal washer first game-winner as she lifted Maryland to a first round winover American in the NCAA first round. She scored her first colle-giate goal vs. George Washington. Francis’ eight assists were oneshort of tying the school record for for helpers by a freshmanwhen Emmy Harbo had nine assists in 1995.

• Defender/midfielder Mallory Mahar was a force on the of-fensive end all season with her headers in the box. All five of hergoals including the first in the game at James Madison came onheaders off set pieces. She converted a corner kick from Francisfor the first goal vs. the Dukes. Overall, she totaled 12 points onthe five goals and two assists.

• Senior Kim King was an important cog off the bench as sheposted three goals and four assists for 10 points this season. Shenotched the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the winover Duke, scoring in the 66th minute and the game-winner inthe 43rd minute against Virginia on Oct. 11. She assisted SimoneDekker’s goal against Penn State in the NCAA second round.King finished her career with 37 points (14 goals and nine as-sists) to rank 11th all-time in scoring at Maryland.

• Freshman Simone Dekker was been a tremendous addition,as the speedy forward played in all 22 games and posted six goalsand three assists for 15 points to rank fifth on the team. Shescored three of her five goals against ACC teams and eight of her15 points have come against conference foes after scoringagainst Florida State in the ACCs. She scored the final goal of theseason against Penn State in the NCAA first round.

• Senior Dana Jarzyniecki continued to provide stability in themidfield in her fourth year. She played in all 82 games since shecame in College Park in 1999 and finished her career ranked tiedfor 12th in career assists with 11.

On the Defensive Side• Junior goalkeeper Kristen Barnhill was strong in the netsince she was given the starting role for the last 10 games (shedid come off the bench after seven minutes against Florida Stateto allow for senior Lynn Scharf to start). She finished with a 1.25goals against average, playing in 14 matches overall in 2002,stopping 77.6 percent of the shots she has faced.

• She posted a pair of shutouts over Virginia and George Masonin her first two collegiate starts. Those shutouts marked the firsttime in eight years that a Maryland keeper had shutouts in herfirst two starts. In September of 1995, freshman Kassie Knechtshut out William & Mary and Old Dominion in back-to -backgames making three saves in each of her first two college starts.Barnhill posted a career-high seven saves in the big ACC win atClemson on Oct. 20. She came up big in her first two major play-ing opportunities this season. First, she showed her worth whenshe came on in the 33rd minute against Duke, when Wilner wasinjured, and made five saves in preserving the Terps’ critical ACCwin for her first collegiate victory. On Oct. 11, Barnhill drew herfirst start after Wilner was issued a red card at Penn State andwas forced to sit out the Virginia, and Barnhill made three savesin posting her first solo shutout.

• The Terps’ defense was strong as well with freshman goalkeeperMariel Wilner in the net for the first 12 starts of the season. Wil-ner has a 1.65 goals against average and a .638 save percentagein her first collegiate season. Wilner picked up her first collegiatesolo shutout with five saves against William & Mary.

• Aiding the keepers on the backline is junior 2001 All-ACC se-lection Lindsay Givens along with senior Katie Kruse, sopho-more Lindsay Niehaus and freshmen Mallory Mahar andKristin McHugh. Mahar, who also moved up to midfield in thelast few games, was a force on set pieces recording five goals allon headers off corner kicks this season including the game-win-ner vs. William & Mary. Sophomore Amy Johnson saw addi-tional playing time due to the season-ending knee injury to Jen-nifer Lovecchio and nagging injuries to McHugh.

Terps Back In The NCAA’s

For Seventh Time• The Maryland women’s soccer team returned to the NCAAWomen’s College Cup for the second consecutive year and sev-enth time in eight years. The Terps are now 6-7 all-time in thetournament, playing in five straight events from 1995 to 1999.Maryland has a 5-2 record all-time in first round NCAA gamesafter winning against American.

• The Terps have won at least one game in each of their previ-ous appearances except in 1997 and 2001. Maryland advancedto the Quarterfinals twice in 1995 and 1996. The Terps also madeit through to the second round in 1998 and 1999.

• 2002 was the sixth year in which Maryland hosted at leastone round of the NCAA women’s soccer tournament, but the firstsince 1999. In that last game, Maryland beat Long Island, 6-0 inthe first round at Ludwig Field on Nov. 10, 1999 before they wentto face Penn State in the second round in University Park.

• All-time Maryland is 6-2 in NCAA matches on its home turfwinning once in 1995, 1998, 1999, 2002 and twice in 1996. Theonly loss prior to this year, came to George Mason, 2-1, in 1997.

• Maryland finished with an 8-4 record at Ludwig Field this sea-son and has an all-time mark of 64-24-4 (.717) at the field sinceit was opened for the 1995 season.

Losses To Top Teams• Each of the Terps defeats in 2002 came to a team that was rankedin the NSCAA’s Top 25 this season and five were ranked in the finalregular-season poll. UConn ClassicSTORRS, Conn. - The

Maryland women's soc-cer team opened the2002 season with a con-vincing 5-0 victory overFordham in the firstgame of the 2002 UConnClassic. The Terps re-ceived goals from five different players in the win.

"The freshmen really contributed to the win,"said head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski, whopicked up her 99th career coaching victory with thewin. "We had a lot of chances and were able to con-vert on five of them."

Maryland jumped out to a 3-0 lead at halftime asAli Andrzejewski opened the scoring with her firstcollegiate goal on a pass from Jen Biscoe Andrzjewskiscored on a deep shot from the left side of the fieldthat deflected off the right goalpost and in.

Junior Katie Ludwig scored the second goal ona breakway when she deeked the goalkeeper andscored in the 27th minute.

Freshman Mallory Mahar netted her first col-lege goal on a beautiful header off a corner kick fromfreshman Kimmy Francis in the 42nd minute.

In the second half, Francis was once again theplaymaker as she set up Audra Poulin's goal in the61st minute to make it 4-0. Sophomore MelissaAnderson scored her first college goal in the 80thminute as she deflected in a header shot by Maharwhich began with a corner kick from DanielleMalagari.

The Terp defense was solid, stopping all fourshots by the Rams to post their fourth straight sea-son opener via shutout. Freshman Mariel Wilnermade two saves in the first 66 minutes and was fol-lowed by Kristen Barnhill, who made one save.

Sophomore Jen Lovecchio preserved the shut-out with a key defensive save with time windingdown in the second half.

It was Maryland's fourth straight season-open-ing win (all via shutout) and the most they havescored in an opener since a 6-0 blowout of VirginiaTech in 1995.

N.J. -- A potent Mary-land attack gave Terps'head coach ShannonHiggins-Cirovski her100th career victory as acoach as the Terps cap-tured a 5-2 victory overRutgers in a key regional match which was broad-cast on CN8-TV.

The Terps broke open with four second-half goalsincluding one each by New Jersey natives KatieLudwig and Simone Dekker Freshman Ali An-drzejewski netted a pair of goals in the win. An-drzejewski was named the CN8 Star of the Matchfor her five-point performance.

"This was a great win for us," said Higgins-Cir-ovski, who was surprised by the Terps with a specialcake to commemorate the 100th win. "Our offensereally clicked. We saw a lot of great things out of ourforwards and midfielders.

Maryland grabbed a two-goal lead early, 3-1, inthe second half on a pair of goals 1:24 apart. Ludwigscored off a Rutgers' turnover in the defensive zone.Ludwig intercepted the ball and beat Rutgers' keeperChristine Caldwell in a one-on-one in the 64thminute. Then Andrzejewski netted her second of thegame in the 65th minute as she took a pass fromJen Biscoe and scored into the right side of the net.

That assist was the first of three in the game forBiscoe, who equaled Dana Jarzyniecki's schoolrecord of three assists in a game, originally set onOct. 11, 2000 vs. Howard. Biscoe assisted the Terpsfinal three goals of the game for her new career high.

UConn jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair ofearly goals just 28 seconds apart. Kristen Graczykscored on a header off a pass from Jennifer Sullivan10:47 into the match. The Huskies followed that witha goal by Jennifer Gjertsen, 11:15 into the game.

After being outshot, 9-7 in the first half, the moreinspired Terps came out on the attack in the secondhalf. Maryland took 11 of the first 12 shots in the sec-ond half with 10 of those coming in the first 12 min-utes of the half.

Maryland's offense was finally rewarded as Au-dra Poulin knocked in a rebound off a header shotby Mallory Mahar in the 56th minute to make it 2-1. The play started with a corner kick by KimmyFrancis, who was credited with her third assist ofthe tournament.

Maryland/FILA ClassicCOLLEGE PARK, Md. -

The 2002 Maryland/FILA Classic ended witha second-half scoringoutburst as No. 11 NotreDame came back from atwo-goal deficit to de-feat host No. 25 Mary-land 5-2.

Although Maryland struck twice within five min-utes to grab a two-goal lead in the 55th minute, theIrish (4-2) peppered the Terp defense with 13 sec-ond-half shots and a flurry of scoring opportunities.

Junior Amanda Guertin paced the Notre Damecomeback with the go-ahead goal and two assists.

Candace Chapman's 65th minute blast sparkedthe Irish onslaught and cut the Terrapin lead to one.

Tournament MVP Melissa Tancredi and Guertinscored in less than one minute to give Notre Damethe lead in the 79th minute, 3-2.

Tancredi added her second goal of the game inthe 87th minute and Randi Scheller's fourth tally ofthe season two minutes later ended any chance fora late Terrapin comeback.

After a slow first half that saw the teams com-bine for just eight shots, the Terps came out swing-ing on goals by Mallory Mahar and Katie Ludwig.

Mahar scored the Terps' first goal in the 51stminute, as she put home a beautiful header off a longthrow-in from defender Lindsay Givens.

Maryland continued to attack and capitalizedwhen Ludwig was credited with her fourth goal of theyear in the 55th minute as her hard shot deflected offa Notre Dame defender and past keeper Erika Bohn.

For Maryland, Ludwig and Jen Biscoe werenamed to the all-tournament team. Notre Dame'shonorees were Bohn, Chapman, Ashley Dryer andAmy Warner. Hartford placed three players on theteam - Tini Lyng, Cindy Walsh and Hilde Bakke.Loyola's recipients were Erica Niemann and AudraGaruccio.

N.C. - Maryland was un-able to end WakeForest's perfection.

The eighth-rankedWake Forest DemonDeacons kept theirrecord peerless, as theymoved to 8-0 with a 3-1 victory over the MarylandTerrapins at Spry Stadium. The game was the ACCopener for both teams as Wake continued its run asone of one 13 undefeated and untied clubs in Divi-sion I women's soccer.

Maryland fell to 4-3 overall with the defeat asSimone Dekker scored the Terps' lone goal.

Wake's junior midfielder Katherine Winsteadconverted a beautiful crossing pass from MelanieSchneider sent right into the center of the Marylandbox to give the Demon Deacons a 2-1 lead in the58th minute. The goal was Winstead's second of thegame and fifth of the season as she put Wake on top1-0 in the 42nd minute.

The Demon Deacons secured the game asSchneider netted her first career goal in the 67thminute to make it 3-1. Schneider scored from an in-credibly sharp angle in the far right corner thatbended past Maryland keeper Mariel Wilner intothe high left corner.

Dekker scored Maryland's only goal to matchWake Forest's game-opening goal as she scored withsix seconds left in the first half to knot the game at1-1. The freshman forward knocked home a free kickfrom Audra Poulin to tie the game and give theTerps a boost heading into halftime.

The goal was Maryland's first against Wake For-est in four games, as the Terps had been shutout 1-0by Wake Forest in the previous three meetings dat-ing back to 1999.

Maryland outlastedarchrival Duke to hold onfor a 3-2 victory on awindy and rainy eveningat Ludwig Field, theirsixth win in sevengames against the No.22 Blue Devils.

Forward Kim King blasted a penalty kick pastDuke keeper Thora Helgadottir in the 66th minutefor the decisive goal. Maryland (6-3, 1-1 ACC) wasawarded the kick after forward Katie Ludwig wastaken down in the box by Duke's Kate Seibert. Thegoal was King's third against Duke in as many games.

Duke (5-4, 0-1) cut the Terrapin lead to 3-2 inthe 73rd minute as midfielder Liz Wagner found thenet off a scramble in front of the Terrapin goal, butMaryland held off several late Duke challenges tocapture the win.

Forward Katie Ludwig gave Maryland their sec-ond lead of the game as she outraced three Dukedefenders on a breakaway and deposited the ballinto the Blue Devil net in the 58th minute to givethe Terps a 2-1 lead.

The victory was Maryland's first over a top 25team this season, after falling in three previous con-tests to ranked opponents.

The win also continues an eight-game streak inthe Maryland-Duke series where the lower-rankedor unranked team has come away the victor.

No. 25 Maryland to a 2-1 victory over the Loyola Grey-hounds at Ludwig Field.

Andrzejewski, who has been limited in practicedue to a right knee strain, entered the game in the66th minute to provide the Terps an offensive boost.

Maryland's leading scorer converted a reboundoff an initial shot by Audra Poulin to beat Loyolakeeper Erica Niemann.

"We got to a point where we needed to be moremobile up top," said head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski. "We brought Ali in to give us more up topbecause we needed a goal and she responded."

The Terps jumped on top early as Simone Dek-ker put home a rebound of a Kimmy Francis blastin the 6th minute. The goal came in Dekker’s first ca-reer start -- in place of the injured Andrzejewski.

Loyola came back to knot the game at 1 on itsfirst and only shot of the half as senior defender Au-dra Garuccio converted a corner kick from freshmanNaomi Daniels in the 26th minute. The goal wasLoyola's first against Maryland since 1993.

Freshman Ali Andrzejewski scored two goalsas the Terps piled up a 34-4 shot margin in thematch. Andrzejewski has keyed the Terps' offensiveoutburst this season and now has a team-high sixgoals in eight games. Through last season's 19-gameschedule, the Terps' leading scorers managed fivegoals for the entire campaign.

Maryland (5-3 overall) also now has 23 goals ineight games after just 24 all of last season. It is alsothe third time this season Maryland has notched fivegoals in a game after scoring a maximum of threein a game all of last season.

Eight different Terps posted points in the matchas Audra Poulin, Kimmy Francis and MelissaAnderson added goals in addition toAndrzejewski's pair. For Francis, the goal was the firstof her collegiate career after she had four assists inthe Terps' first seven matches.

On the assist-end, five different players were cred-ited with helpers: Dana Jarzyniecki on Poulin's goalin the 18th minute. Poulin, herself on Andrzejewski'sfirst of the day in the 36th minute. Freshman SimoneDekker on Francis' first goal in the 40th minute. JenBiscoe on Andrzejewski's second of the game in the51st minute and freshman Danielle Malagari onAnderson's goal in the 75th minute.

The Terps' defense was also strong, as they postedtheir second shutout of the season. Freshman MarielWilner and junior Kristen Barnhill shared thewhitewash as each player made one save in each half.

"I was extremely happy with how we dominatedthis game from the opening whistle," said headcoach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski. "From theopening possession we controlled the game. This isa very good regional victory for us and concludes agreat weekend coupled with the ACC win over Dukeon Friday night."

The Terps scored the game's only goal on a setpiece as freshman Mallory Mahar headed home aKimmy Francis’ corner kick in the 69th minute.

Maryland's defense backstopped by freshmankeeper Mariel Wilner kept the Tribe at bay all af-ternoon. Wilner, who was injured in Friday's win overDuke, returned to make five saves and post her firstcollegiate solo shutout. Overall it was the Terps' thirdwhitewash of the year.

The Terps used a well-balanced attack inoutshooting Mason, 19-6 and holding the Patriotsleading scorer Katy Robertson to just one shot. Mary-land moves to 9-5 overall with their second consecu-tive shutout while Mason falls to 5-9.

Junior Kristen Barnhill made two saves inposting her second straight whitewash in her firsttwo career starts. Barnhill is the first Terps sinceKassie Knecht to win her forst two college starts viashutout. Knecht did it in September of 1995.

Poulin put the Terps on the board in the eighthminute as she converted a pass from Kimmy Franciswith a shot from about 15 yards out into the lowerright corner past keeper Naomi Hines.

CLEMSON, S.C. - Jun-ior midfielder JenBiscoescored thegame-winning goal ona diving header shot offa rebound with 6:33 leftin regulation to lift theMaryland women's soc-cer team to a 3-2 win at Riggs Field. The win isMaryland's first ever at Clemson in six games dat-ing back to 1994 and lifts the Terps to a 10-5 overallrecord and 3-2 in the ACC. Clemson, which wasranked 16th in the Soccer America poll, falls to 9-6overall, 3-3 in the conference. The Terps have wonthree games in a row for the third time this season.

"Obviously we knew we had the talent to win agame like this," said a thrilled head coach ShannonHiggins-Cirovski. "We came out a little flat to startthe game, but I challenged them and they came outhard after that. We really had the better of the playin the second half. This is a great win for us."

In Maryland's first comeback win of the season,the Terps overcame a 1-0 deficit and a 2-1 deficit inthe second half to come away with the win.

Junior Audra Poulin netted her fourth goal inthree games to tie the game at 1-1 in the 41stminute. Poulin volleyed a corner kick from SimoneDekker to the back post beating the Clemsonkeeper, Lauren Heos.

The Tigers regained a 2-1 lead just 1:15 into thesecond half as Heather Beem converted a penalty kickafter Maryland was called for a handball in the box.

But the Terps rallied back as junior KatieLudwigscored a sensational goal in which she workedher way through three Clemson defenders and depos-ited the ball in the 63rd minute to tie the game.

Ludwig help create the winning goal by her fel-low classmate Biscoe. The winning play developed asthe Terps had a fast break down the left side of thefield. The speedy Ludwig then beat a pair of Clemsondefenders and took a shot, Biscoe, who was in the box,who converted the rebound on a diving header in the84th minute to clinch the win for Maryland.

Maryland junior keeper Kristen Barnhill madea career-high seven saves in earning her thirdstraight win, all in the Terps' current win streak.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -It was a bittersweetnight for the Marylandwomen's soccer team asthe Terps dropped atough 1-0 decision toACC rival Florida State onSenior Night at LudwigField. Playing on a wet and cold night the Terpsbattled hard but were unable to overcome an earlydeficit to come away with crucial victory.

Maryland saw its third three-game win streakof the season come to and end as it fell to 10-6 over-all and 3-3 in the ACC. Florida State moved to 10-4-3overall and 3-2-1 in the league.

Florida State scored the only goal as their lead-ing scorer Cindy Schofield knocked home a penaltykick just 1:58 into the match as she beat startinggoalkeeper Lynn Scharf to the low right side.

The Terps outshot the Seminoles 16-7 in thematch, but FSU keeper Kerry York had a career nightin her return to her home state as she made 12 saves,a new career-high.

Maryland had several chances throughout thematches including a pair of quick shots in the boxby freshman Simone Dekker near the end of thefirst half. In the second half freshman KimmyFrancis had numerous chances and finished withfive shots. Her shot with just over a minute wastipped high by York to secure the win.

As part of senior night, six Terps took to LudwigField for the final time in a regular-season game.

Sally Harrison saw her first action since Sept.2001 as she started and played the first seven min-utes. Harrison has been sidelined with a dislocatedkneecap since last year and her playing career hascome to an end.

Scharf and Sarah McClellanalso drew their firstcareer starts and played the first 6:58.

Joining then in the lineup were senior veteransDana Jarzyniecki, who played her 76th consecu-tive match as a Terp; Kim King, who is the 11th all-time leading scorer at Maryland with 35 points inher career and Katie Kruse , who has started 23matches over the last two seasons and been an spir-ited leader for the Terps.

Freshman Kimmy Francis posted a career-highfour points as she had a hand in the first three goalsof the game.

The Terps scored on a set piece to open the scor-ing as Francis' corner kick was headed into the goalby freshman Mallory Mahar in the 15th minute.

Francis then assisted the second goal as the re-bound of her shot was knocked in by junior mid-fielder Jen Biscoe in the 32nd minute making it2-0.

With her two assists, Francis now has eight onthe season to lead the Terps and is one off the schoolrecord for assists by a freshman set by Emmy Harboin 1995.

Francis then took care of the honors on her ownas she nailed a free kick over a JMU wall for her sec-ond goal of the season in the 54th minute.

The Terps finished their scoring as freshman AliAndrezjewski scored her eighth goal of the sea-son to tie Audra Poulin for the team lead.Andrezjewski scored a breakaway goal off a passfrom Kim King in the 69th minute.

James Madison spoiled Kristen Barnhill's at-tempt for her third career solo shutout as MindyLight scored on a shot across the box into the lowerright corner in the 74th minute. Barnhill made foursaves for her fifth win in six decisions.

The Maryland women'ssoccer team posted itsfirst positive resultagainst 17-time na-tional champion NorthCarolina and its best re-sult ever against a teamranked in the top two inthe nation as the No. 23Terps tied the No. 2 Tar Heels, 1-1 in the double over-time at Fetzer Field.

The Terps (11-6-1, 3-3-1 ACC) had previously lostall 18 matches to North Carolina dating to 1987, thestart of its varsity program. The Tar Heels (14-1-4, 4-1-2 ACC) clinch the outright title in the ACC and will bethe No. 1 seed at the ACC Tournament at Florida State.

"I am very excited with this result," said Mary-land head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski, who wonfour national championships at North Carolina from1986-89. "We competed with them throughout thegame. We had many opportunities and possessedthe ball giving us many chances in the game."

Junior captain Lindsay Givens tied the gameat 1-1 as her throw-in deflected off UNC midfielderAnne Felts in the 48th minute.

The goal was the second of Givens' career andmarked the second time this season one of her throw-ins resulted in a goal as an own goal was credited whenshe had a throw-in against Duke on Sept. 27.

The goal was just the Terps' second ever againstNorth Carolina, as Courtney Beirne scored Maryland'sfirst-ever goal against UNC last season.

The Terps had a chance to win the game the endof regulation as Kimmy Francis blasted a shot fromthe top of the box that was stopped by UNC keeperAly Winget with 19 second left on the clock.

Maryland secured its best-ever result with NorthCarolina as it sent the game to overtime.

In the 18 previous meetings with UNC, the Terpsclosest game was a two-goal margin, which they lost2-0 in 1998 and 3-1 last season, when the Terpsscored their first-ever goal vs. UNC.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -Fifth-seeded No. 16Maryland advanced tothe semifinals of the2002 ACC Soccer Cham-pionship with a 4-2 vic-tory over host No. 19Florida State, the No. 4 seed, at the Seminole SoccerComplex. With the win, Maryland improved to 12-6-1 on the year. FSU fell to 11-6-3 on the season.

Despite outshooting the Terrapins 10-5 in thefirst half, the Seminoles trailed 2-1 at the break.Maryland's freshman Mallory Mahar put the Terpson the board first when she headed in a goal from along throw in by junior Lindsay Givens at 26:34.Maryland made it 2-0 when freshman KimmyFrancis beat FSU keeper Kerry York with a dynamicblast with 34:38 on the clock. Freshman defenderKristin McHugh set up Francis at the top of the boxand was credited with an assist. FSU freshman EricaLewis cut the Terrapin lead in half with a shot to theleft from 25 yards out at 40:33.

Freshman Ali Andrzejewski scored the Terra-pins third goal, eight minutes into the second halfat the 53:33 mark on a crossing assist by junior JenBiscoe. But the Seminoles quickly responded andcut the Terrapin lead to just one once again at 56:20when sophomore Camie Bybee one-timed the ballin after sophomore Jez Ratliff centered the ball tosenior Cindy Schofield, who headed it to Bybee.

Florida State, however, had just five shots in thesecond half and just two on goal. The aggressive Ter-rapins recorded six shots in the final 45 minutes, fiveof which were on goal. Their final goal was by Si-mone Dekker who after receiving a long pass fromBriscoe, dribbled down the center of the field pastthe FSU goalkeeper and knocked the ball in from thedeep right side of the box as it deflected off the backfoot of Katie Beal who cam eback on defense.

Prior to tonight's match, FSU had won threestraight over Maryland with a 1-0 victory in the regu-lar season on October 25, a 7-2 win in last season'sACC tourney and 2-0 during the 2001 regular season.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -The second-rankedNorth Carolina Tar Heelscollected a 4-0 victoryover No. 16 Maryland inthe ACC women's soccersemifinals at FloridaState. The No. 1 seeded Tar Heels advance to the ACCtitle match for the 15th consecutive year having wonthe title the last 14 years.

North Carolina jumped on top as Susan Bushscored 18:11 into the match. She collected a loose balland shot it far post into the lower right corner of thenet as Maryland keeper Kristen Barnhill came outthe net on the loose ball situation.

Just two minutes after the UNC goal, Marylandhad its best scoring chance of the first half off a Lind-say Givens' throw-in. Katie Ludwig booted a shotoff the crossbar then Mallory Mahar grabbed therebound and shot it wide.

Senior Dana Jarzyniecki had two of the Terps'other four shots in the first half including a good op-portunity with just over eight minutes left in the halfwhere she shot the ball high over the net.

With just 47 seconds left in the half, Ludwig rifleda shot off a UNC defender and it hit into the outsideof the right side of the net resulting in a Marylandcorner kick. UNC was able to clear the ball out andfinished the half with a 1-0 lead.

North Carolina outshot the Terps 13-6 in the firsthalf, but Maryland outworked the Heels and wonmany 50-50 balls. Defenders Lindsay Givens, Kris-tin McHugh. Katie Kruse and Lindsay Niehauscontinued their hard work in front of Barnhill.

Early in the half, Barnhill made a key point blanksave 9:09 into the match on Anne Morrell from in-side the box. Barnhill made another save on a headerby Maggie Tomecka 13:28 into match.

In the second half, UNC came out fast and jumpedthe score to 2-0 as Anne Morrell completed a setpiece that began with an Alyssa Ramsey corner kickjust two-and-a-half minutes into the half at the47:23 mark. Morrell punched the loose ball thatbounced around inside the Maryland box as the Terpswere unable to clear the ball out.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -For the second time infour years, Penn State cutshort Maryland's seasonwith a dramatic 2-1 winto advance to the thirdround of the NCAAWomen's College Cup for the fourth year in a row.

Heavy rains and chilly temperatures caused poorfield conditions that saw players slipping and slid-ing around the pitch at Ludwig Field, but a lateheader by Penn State's Heidi Drummond found thecorner of the Maryland net with just over two min-utes remaining for the winning tally.

Penn State peppered Maryland keeper KristenBarnhill with multiple scoring chances in the sec-ond half, but Barnhill came up big on several occa-sions to keep the game tied. Barnhill finished withfive saves, four in the second half.

The Nittany Lions got on the scoreboard firstwhen Tiffany Weimer evaded three Maryland de-fenders and found Silver Spring native JoannaLohman in the middle of the box who deposited a6-yard shot into an open net in the 32nd minute.

Freshman Simone Dekker entered the gamein the 36th minute, hoping to give the Terrapins anoffensive boost. Two minutes later, she delivered withher sixth goal of the season, collecting a loose ballin front of the Penn State net and slamming it pastkeeper Amanda Brown to even the score at one.

Maryland finished the season with a 13-8-1record, which is the most wins for the Terps since a19-win season in 1996. The game concludes the ca-reers of seniors Kim King , Dana Jarzyniecki,Katie Kruse, Sally Harrison and Lynn Scharf.
