FURTHER APPROVAL FROM ACECQA CUTS TIME AND COST
The Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) has just added our Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood Education) to its list of approved programs.
This is great news for our graduates considering working in Australia, as they can be granted early childhood teacher (ECT)* status in all Australian states and territories without having to pay $108 NZD for an assessment of their qualification. This news follows ACECQA’s decision to approve our Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) earlier in the year.
Graduates who want to be granted ECT status can apply through the ACECQA website. The Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) is listed under code PC9727 and the Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood Education) is listed under PC8619.
The early childhood sector in Australia differs from the one in New Zealand. There are three different levels of teachers - ‘educators’ who hold a level 3 qualification, ‘educators’ who can supervise other educators and hold a level 5 or 6 qualification; and ‘early childhood teachers’ who hold a degree and have a management position around curriculum and teaching.
For anyone thinking of studying at NZTC, Jasmine has some helpful advice: “I’d certainly recommend they teach while studying, because I found it so helpful to read about a particular technique one day, then try it out at my centre the next. After gaining solid early childhood knowledge from my Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education), I went on and completed a Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood Education).
On practicums I had the chance to work in several different centres. I worked with children and teachers from all walks of life, which meant I had ample opportunities to learn different teaching techniques, philosophies and approaches. I’m currently in the process of applying for my teacher registration.”
