Welcome
These are challenging economictimes for all of us. While it hasalways been our belief that adultlearning matters, there is certainlynow a recognition at the highestlevels of government that duringan economic downturn it isessential. Learning encouragesresilience, self-confidence and apositive outlook.
Thousands of Medway residentsenrol on our courses every year,knowing that our wonderful team ofexperienced, dedicated and friendlytutors will provide an enjoyable andstimulating environment in which todevelop new skills and interests:Whether you want to discover yourartistic flair or dance your caresaway, learn to play Mah Jongg orbuild a bee box with your kids to doyour bit for the environment – thereis something for you … and you
can meet new people and makenew friends.
On 17 October 2009 we will havea full day’s programme to supportthe National Family LearningFestival. This year we hope totempt an even larger number ofgrandparents to come along andjoin in the fun.
On Saturday, 20 March 2010 wewill be running our Carousel ofDance and Fitness Taster coursesto raise money for charity.
To meet the needs of people whowork outside Medway andcommute every day we will berunning a larger Saturdayprogramme to ensure that no-oneis left out. Look out for the specialcentre pages which list ourSaturday provision, arranged bydate for easy reference.
On Thursdays we host a Women’sInstitute market at the RochesterCentre where you can buy home-made cakes, free-range eggs, craftsand books in the foyer. Call into theGallery Café for a cup of tea.
We listen to our learners and our partners and refresh ourprogramme continuously inresponse to the feedback. It is ouraim to ensure that there is a widechoice of high quality learningopportunities for everyone. Newcourses are publicised at thecentres and also keep an eye onour website so that you don’t miss out.

Rochester CentreEastgate, Rochester ME1 1EWJust off Rochester High Street, the Rochester Centre is located 5-10minutes walk from Rochester RailwayStation. Arriva buses numbered 133,136, 140, 141, 151, 172, 173, 193, 633,668, 700 and 701 stop right outside theCentre on Corporation Street. Public car parking is available near theCentre at Blue Boar Lane and AlmonPlace (both up to five hours maximumstay) and for longer courses there isthe Market Car Park in CorporationStreet which offers long stay.
Gillingham Centre Green Street, Gillingham ME7 5TJJust off High Street Gillingham,the Gillingham Centre is located fiveminutes walk from Gillingham RailwayStation. Arriva buses numbered 101,114, 136, 176, 182 serve theGillingham Town Centre and will setpassengers down about five minuteswalk from the centre in most cases. Public car parking is available near theCentre at Balmoral car park and BlackLion (both up to four hours). Pay anddisplay street parking in Green Street islimited to a maximum of two hours.

All ourteaching staff are practicingprofessionals in their subject areas andhave a passion for their art or craft thatthey are keen to share. Both our maincentres have gallery and displayfacilities, which are regularly updatedwith displays celebrating the
achievements of our learners. There isalso the chance to exhibit in a range oflocal community venues. The atmosphere within classes isalways friendly, supportive and veryproductive. Visits to galleries andevents further enrich the exchange ofideas and skills that take place withinthe studios.

The Certificate in Combined Studiesoffers a good first step into highereducation. It is an open-entryprogramme which means that studentsdo not need any special qualificationsbefore they can enrol. studying. FeesTuition fees and concessions
Eligibility Most of our classes are subsidised by the Learning and SkillsCouncil. LSC funding is automatically available to peopleaged 16 and over, who have been living continuously for thelast three years in the UK, or are an EU national (or spouse orchild of an EU national) who has been resident continuouslyin an EU country for at least the last three years. If this doesnot apply to you, please enquire.
There are three fees given against each course (see column headings):

B 30 per cent concession on tuition fees;C 100 per cent concession on tuition fees.
The percentage of the concession depends on your individualcircumstances.
We are not able to offer concessions on additional charges.These include: Materials and resources, exam boardregistration fees, examination administration and examinationfees, course registration fee.
Concessions are not available on some courses.

Other information about fees
Additional costs• Many courses involve costs other than tuition. These are
detailed on the Course Information Sheet (CIS). These canbe requested from our offices or downloaded fromwww.medway.gov.uk/course_finder/learning
• Additional costs will include things such as books,materials and examination fees.
• If payable on enrolment, they are shown as other fees onthe CIS and are included in the course fee (non-refundable).
Courses with qualifications• It is a stipulation by the Learning and Skills Council that
learners who are enrolled on courses with qualificationsmust be aiming to gain the qualification.
• If there is no intention to complete theexamination/assessment the fee for the individual learnermay be charged at a higher rate.
Examination fees• All learners are required to pay the examination fees in full,
with the exception of 16 to 18-year-olds and Skills for Life(English and maths) learners.
• For most courses the examination fee is additional to thecourse fee and is payable during the course.
• Any examination fees paid after the due date will be subjectto an additional £5 administration fee.
Refunds• Refunds are only issued to learners who withdraw more
than one week before the start date. A £10 administrationcharge will be deducted.
• After the course has started, refunds are only given if thecourse is closed. The amount refunded will be a pro-rataamount calculated on the length of time the course ran.

Learner servicesClass cancellations• Every effort is made to run all courses as advertised.• In the event of low enrolment numbers we will endeavour
to offer alternative classes.• If there is no suitable alternative class, or you do not wish to
accept the alternative class, you will receive a full refund.
Full courses• Courses will be closed to new enrolments when they have
reached their maximum enrolment level. To avoiddisappointment we will endeavour to arrange new classesto accommodate those who are waiting to join. Due tostaffing and rooming constraints it may not always bepossible to offer additional classes at the same centre oron the same days as originally advertised.
Easy payment planWhile our courses offer excellent value for money, we areaware that for some of our learners it would be helpful to beable to spread the payments. We therefore offer an EasyPayment Plan for courses of 15 weeks or longer or costingmore than £82.
Calculating monthly standing order payments

• First payment is due on enrolment (cheques payable toMedway Council).

• If you withdraw from a course any instalments whichare still owed must be paid in full.
• The total cost of the course must be paid in full before yourcourse finishes.

Support for learners with disabilitiesAt Medway Adult and Community Learning Service weare committed to helping learners succeed whatever theirbackground or additional needs. Learner Support Fund (LSF)A limited fund is made available by LSC to provideadditional financial support to those learners on courseswhere the code ends in F and are in receipt of a means-tested benefit. This fund is available to help learners with:• exam and registration fees;• crèche or childcare fees;• books and/or equipment;• travel costs.Application forms are available from the centre offices. Study facilitiesWe have a resources room in the Gillingham centre whereyou can call in and use a computer to type up coursenotes or to do research on the internet. Public accesscomputers are available at Rochester Library (within theRochester centre).
Refreshment facilitiesThe Gillingham and Rochester centres have cafés servinglight refreshments, snacks and drinks. Class breaksprovide an opportunity to relax and socialise with theother learners on your course. Refreshment services atother centres vary.
Support with English, maths and languageEnglish and maths support may be available if you arestudying certain subjects. We may also be able to providelanguage support if English is not your first language.Please contact Heather Drew on 01634 338400.

EnrolmentHow to enrol
For courses in this year’s guide enrolment starts on 13 Julyand continues throughout the year. You can enrol in anumber of ways.
In person• Call at one of our centres (it doesn’t have to be the centre

You are advised to enrol as early as possible to avoiddisappointment. Some classes fill very quickly and othersmay be cancelled due to low enrolments before the startdate. For one-day courses you are advised to book at leasttwo weeks in advance.
When you enrol please remember to bring (or send):
• your completed Enrolment form (see page 43) or downloadfrom www.medway.gov.uk/adultlearning;
• standing order mandate if you wish to use the easypayment plan (see page 45);
• proof of eligibility for benefit-related or other concession(see page 40). You will be requested to show proof ofbenefit on enrolment. If you have enrolled by phone, fax orpost it will be necessary to show proof at a later date,otherwise you will be charged the full fee.

Other important enrolmentinformation
Waiting lists• If your chosen course is full and there are no alternatives,
we will ask if you wish to be placed on a waiting list. Wemay have a cancellation or be able to start another class. If you enrol on a course and subsequently decided not toattend (prior to the start date) please let us know as theremay be someone waiting for a place.
Late enrolments• Courses will run when they have reached the minimum
level for viability. In some cases there may still be spaceswhich can be enrolled when the course has alreadystarted. If there is a course that interests you please ask.Enquiries are welcomed throughout the year.
Course changes• Our courses usually run as advertised but we cannot
guarantee this. On some occasions they may have to beclosed or altered following the publication of thedirectory. This is usually in response to circumstancesoutside our control.
