Emergency RoomExam gloves selected for use in the Emergency Department should provide protection against bloodborne pathogens and be strong enough to withstand the rigours of the tasks performed. Nitrile gloves are the recommended choices for high-stress activities. High-performance third-generation vinyl gloves can be used as a complement for routine patient care.

Labor and DeliveryLabor and Delivery generally prefer to use latex-free gloves to avoid any potential latex allergy issues with newborns. Critical and Noncritical Care UnitsUnits such as Intensive Care, Med-Surg, Radiology, Respiratory, and Physiotherapy perform procedures that do not generally place signifi cant levels of stress on examination gloves. Facilities have greater fl exibility in selecting an exam glove for these areas. Powder-free nitrile, powder-free latex, and second- or third-generation stretch vinyl gloves are all excellent choices.

Viral PenetrationThe viral penetration test determines if a glove provides an effective barrier against one of the smallest measurable viruses in the world, phi-X174. If the glove is a barrier to the phi-X174 virus, it also provides a barrier against larger viruses.
