The Coward Girl Who Pretended to Be Brave, very bad by Barbijaputa

This book is written by the Spanish journalist and activist Barbijaputa. It tells in first person the story of a girl called Bárbara who starts working as a flight assistant and flies to exotic countries. At first, she loves her job, but step by step she gets tired of keeping up with the strict and sexist ideals that rule her job and she quits. In one of her trips to Cuba she meets a pilot, who she calls TMWMITW (The Most Wonderful Man in the World) and they start dating and, after some time, they also start living together. However, one day she realizes she is not the kind of person the world expects and that causes her suffering and frustration. She feels guilty and punishes herself. Even TMWMITW abandons her.

This book is a travel through all the obstacles and difficulties that women suffer in a country like Spain (that could be any other from the occidental culture) along our lives, as it also reflects violent experiences from her teenage love relationships and the victim-blaming phenomenon. With humor, tenderness and a good dose of social reality, the most famous tweeter, well known for her feminist and acid critic tweets, provides us with a reflection about the female role in our society.

Learn with Us

On Tuesday 21st November 14 year 9 Grammar Stream students attended the ‘Learn with US’ careers workshop at Southampton University.

It was such a busy day! After a brief tour of the campus, the students listened to some career guidance about making the right choice for university and A ‘levels, before moving on to a session about music and copyright law where they had to decide whether Ed Sheeran had plagiarised a song by Mat Cardle. They did this by analysing sheet music, identifying similarities in the sheet music and listening to excerpts from both songs. All groups got it right, it was ruled that he had plagiarised it, although they did feel that the out of court settlement of $20 million was a bit steep! After lunch, a brilliant Southampton alumni gave a talk about her new career in family law-she was a fantastic speaker who really grabbed the student’s interest. After that was a project where the school groups had to design and pitch (like ‘Dragons Den’, but with less scary dragons)an app that helps students make the right subject choice for the right career. Medina performed really well but were out pitched by Redbridge school.

As usual, Miss Hargreaves and I were impressed and proud of the enthusiasm, conduct and maturity of our students throughout the day.

Our ambassadors, Megan (L) and Natalie (R). Natalie Berry is an ex Medina and IIVI student, now working on her Masters in psychology!

Presenting to the ‘Dragons’

CAN YOU HELP?

Medina Music Winter Concert, Wednesday 13th December, 7pm at St Mary's Church, Brighstone. The music department has asked if Parent Voice can help source donations of mulled wine and/or mince pies for this festive event. Please let me know if you can help with either, or have any shop contacts who might be able to help.

Parent Voice will be at the event helping serve refreshments, so if you would like to chip in, please let me know. The more the merrier! It's always a real treat to hear our fantastic students (and staff) perform at these concerts.

Look forward to seeing you soon!

Year 7 Rugby Fixture Medina vs Ryde School B

Medina Year 7s produced a superb performance against Ryde School yesterday winning 40 - 10.

It was Medina’s first rugby match of the season and they didn’t disappoint. Led by the influential Archy Williams Medina struck early with captain Williams showing his pace to get past the Ryde defence and score. Ryde struck back with a good try before the impressive Louis Gulliver showed pace and power to score 2 quality tries. The Medina forwards Josh, Thomas, Korben, Lennon, George and Roman were using their size to good affect and the scrum was very solid. The Medina defence were performing well with some full bodied committed tackles which kept the Ryde attack at bay. Some great interchanging rugby from Oliver and Jenson created space for Cameron to ghost through and score the final try of the half.

Half Time Medina 20 Ryde 5

The second half started and the home side were on the front foot again with Archy scoring 2 more terrific solo tries followed by Ryde scoring their second. A thunderous tackle from Charlie Taylor stopped a certain Ryde try before tries from Cameron and Lennon sealed the victory. Mason took over the kicking duties and produced some really committed tackles which forced the opposition into some mistakes and Koby and Adam were dangerous with ball in hand throughout the match.

Full Time Medina 40 Ryde 10

With 10 out of the 15 players playing their first proper contact match it was a terrific result and I’m sure the boys learnt a lot from the experience of playing. Well done Year 7 and bring on the next game.

Global Rock

On Saturday sixteen students from our wonderful Rock Challenge team packed customer’s shopping at Asda to raise money for our entry performance in February. They raised a fantastic £255.62! Well done! You were an absolute credit to the school and the team.

We are still fundraising so if you are able to help with organising events or perhaps know of a way that could support us including: travel discounts to Portsmouth, van hire, materials for costumes, stage makeup, set materials (paint, brushes, wire, wood) please do get in touch with Mrs Wherry via [email protected].
