Located in the heart of Dublin, Ireland’s capital city, the College has played a leading role in medical education and training since its foundation in 1784.

Today, RCSI is the only specialist health sciences university in Ireland offering students the opportunity to study in an environment where all students at undergraduate, postgraduate and research level are pursuing a health related discipline. RCSI is Ireland’s largest medical school, one of the most international medical schools in the world, and is ranked in the top 2% by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (2018).

The RCSI School of Medicine offers undergraduate and graduate entry programmes and a number of entry points for students at different stages of their education. The Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM) programme is structured using the same model as the North American medical schools, where students enter having completed an undergraduate degree and join a 4-year medical programme. Our Undergraduate Programme allows students to join directly from high school, completing the medical course in either five or six years.

RCSI medical graduates are conferred with the Licentiates of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (LRCSI and LRCPI), in addition to the internationally recognised medical degrees of the National University of Ireland (MB, BCh, BAO).

RCSI’s medical program has a strong emphasis on clinical skills, patient contact, and medical knowledge. This does not go unnoticed when on clinical electives in Canada, as RCSI has a strong reputation and students consistently excel in the workplace. It is through the connections RCSI has with many international and North American universities that it affords its student opportunities to gain clinical experience in their chosen field. In final year, the university appreciates the importance of international electives and protected clinical elective time. These experiences are extremely valuable when applying for residency match at North American Institutions.

RCSI has a tradition of educating students from North America, with almost 25% of the student population coming from Canada and the USA. The College supports students with their career development and has a high success rate in matching graduates in North American residency programmes.

The Careers Development Office works with students to maximise their potential and employability, by ensuring that all employment criteria are met. Alongside the one-to-one planning, the College also offers career workshops and meetings with international speakers and recruiters.

RCSI has established the North American Licensing Preparation Programmes to support students in their application for the United States and Canadian licensing examinations. The preparatory programme allows students to avail of a range of resources to support them in the licensing examinations process.

These comprehensive educational programmes have been developed by the Careers Office to address the challenges students face when preparing for board examinations whilst completing their medical studies. RCSI also protects time in its curriculum to allow students to travel to North America and complete their examinations with the smallest amount of disruption to their studies.

The College’s high performance in the licensing examinations, in conjunction with clinical electives offered at a number of prestigious North American institutions underpins the high success rate in matching students with their residency of choice.

To prepare for North American licensing exams, in addition to our strong didactic program, we have text and video resources, question banks, and practice exams available to us. Later on, the peer-led services at RCSI become invaluable in providing advice for both academic and extra-curricular distinction.

RCSI has a wide number of elective opportunities. During my final year I was able to complete two of my rotations abroad, at Columbia University in New York City and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Through the generosity of RCSI alumni I was even able to secure grant funding to support my electives.

Participation in clinical electives in the final two years of medical schooling is an essential part of the programme for North American students whose goal is residency training. Clinical electives provide excellent opportunities to explore specialties and secure those all-important ‘letters of recommendation’.

The following institutions are a representative sample of the locations where our students have successfully completed their clinical electives. RCSI invests considerable time and resources in building relationships to facilitate such clinical opportunities with North American institutions of strategic importance.

• Columbia University

• Emory University

• Johns Hopkins Hospital

• Mayo Clinic

• McMaster University

• Northwestern University

• UMASS Baystate Medical Center

• University of British Columbia

• University of Colorado

• University of Massachusetts

• University of Pennsylvania

• University of Saskatchewan

• University of Toronto

One of the ways RCSI helps you is through the collaborative programs they have in place with many prestigious medical institutions throughout North America. These institutions have already welcomed many RCSI students before and feel comfortable giving you a lot of responsibility.

I had the pleasure of completing an elective at the University of Pennsylvania in Radiology through this collaborative agreement. One of the first things I noted was how well recognized and respected RCSI is across the medical community. You will find many RCSI alumni practicing at these hospitals and they will usually take the time out of their busy schedule to help you out. The priority RCSI places on anatomy as well as the early exposure to clinical medicine allowed me to excel throughout my electives.

Transforming Healthcare Education at No. 26 York StreetIn August 2017 RCSI opened its extended campus at No. 26 York Street. This new facility forms part of an extended city centre campus and is home to Europe’s largest clinical skills simulation facility. This 120,000 square foot complex with state-of-the-art teaching spaces and first class student facilities is poised to transform healthcare education.

RCSI’s undergraduate health sciences students now develop their early clinical and patient management skills in an extensive hi-tech simulated environment before entering the clinical hospital sites. This allows students to develop their clinical competence and confidence in a safe, repeatable and structured learning environment in advance of engaging with the more acutely ill patient in the hospital setting.

No. 26 York Street is Ireland’s deepest building and below ground are auditoria and extensive sports and fitness facilities. At the heart of the building lies a specialist health sciences library spanning three floors, with more than 500 study spaces for undergraduate, postgraduate and research students. The top three floors house clinical training wards, standardised patient rooms and advanced surgical and clinical training suites.

This modern facility in the heart of Dublin city represents RCSI’s vision for a world-class educational facility at the global forefront of innovation in healthcare education and training.
