Learn about anatomy, physiology, and pathology, plus clinical procedural skills, public health issues, and managing chronic diseases. You will study at Waurn Ponds (Geelong) for the first two years, learning through problem-based seminars and praccal classes. You will also get clinical experience in laboratories, hospitals, and other health services in the Geelong region. In year three and four students will undergo intensive clinical training within a clinical school; these have been aligned with hospitals, health services and clinics in numerous areas. The program has clinical schools within University Hospital Geelong, Eastern Health in Melbourne, and Ballarat and Warrnambool Health services. The School also has a disnct Rural Community Clinical School (RCCS) which provides students the opportunity to undertake their third year clinical experience in smaller rural and regional towns. ‘Deakin provides a well-rounded course with an emphasis on problem-based learning, comparable to real life clinical practice. The Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery is a graduate entry program for students wishing to qualify as medical practitioners. Learn about anatomy, physiology, and pathology, plus clinical procedural skills, public health issues, and managing chronic diseases.

Practical work experience and clinical based learningThe first two years of the medicine course are based at the Geelong Waurn Pond’s Campus. During this time, you’ll attend clinical sites such as hospitals, general practices and community health centres in the Geelong region.

In the third year students will have an option to select one of the five clinical school to commence their clinical training: Geelong, Ballarat, Warrambool, Eastern Health or RCCS.

In fourth year, clinical training is then consolidated within the Geelong, Ballarat, Warrambool or Eastern Health clinical schools.

Career opportunities after completing our Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of SurgeryDeakin Medical School graduates will be well prepared to work as interns in regional, metropolitan and interstate hospitals. They will be equipped to enter training programs for a diverse range of medical careers, including general practice, surgery, pathology, emergency medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, anaesthetics, geriatric medicine, radiology, occupational and rehabilitation medicine and many other specialities. Other possible career paths include academia, medical research and hospital and government medical administration.

Minimum entry requirementsAdmission to the Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (BMBS) is determined by a combination of grade point average (GPA) in an approved undergraduate degree; Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT) score, eligible bonuses and interview performance.

Complete Bachelor Degree with the weighted GPA of at least 5A completed undergraduate degree from an Australian university or a Higher Education institution recognised by the Australian Qualifications Framework, or a recognised Bachelor qualification listed in the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (NOOSR) Guide. No preference is given to graduates with particular Bachelor degrees. Deakin University encourages individuals from diverse educational backgrounds who will bring to the profession a variety of talents and interests. A minimum weighted GPA of 5. The GPA score is based on academic grades during the final three full time equivalent years of the most recent undergraduate degree (including an honours year if applicable).

Invitations to interviews are releasedIn early September invitations to interview will be sent to up to 200 applicants based on GAMSAT + GPA Score (50:50) with additional weighting for bonuses.

Interviews at Deakin Waurn Ponds CampusDeakin Medical School uses the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) process. Each applicant undergoes a series of 5 minute interviews at 10 stations, using standardised questions and scoring procedures. Offers into Medicine are releasedIn November Deakin Medical School will offer 97 Commonwealth supported places and 37 Bonded Medical Places to successful applicants.

Register and complete the GAMSATMinimum entry requirement is an overall GAMSAT score of 50 with a minimum score of 50 in each of the three sections. Registrations for the GAMSAT open in November and close early February. The GAMSAT test day is in late March.

Apply through GEMSASAll applications for the Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery must be made via the Graduate Entry Medical Schools Admissions System (GEMSAS). Applications open in early May and close at the end of May.
