History All started back in 1500 B.C. when

identification of a parasite was done In 1922 an agency ASCP- American Society

of Clinical Pathology was developed to set standards for laboratory professionals

This agency is considered the “gold standard” in certification

In 1930’s the ASCLS required members to be certified under the ASCP and maintain highly educated and professional people

Salary Median Pay as of 2012 is $57,580 per

year and average of $22.99 per hour and up

Salary is based upon region and years of experience along with the proper certification

If working in a lab you can become a Lab Manager or some form of management

50% of Medical Technologist work in a general medical or surgical hospital; state, local, and private

17% work for medical and diagnostic labs

10% work for office of physicians 5% work for colleges, universities, and

Experience Need to have graduated from an

NAACLS accredited program and be eligible to sit for a certification exam

Most places want at least 1 year experience or some form of clinical training

Depending on the place some will hire right out of school and give on the job training with proper educational background

License/ Certification Needed Depending on the state you are residing

is what license or certification you will have to obtain

ASCP is considered the gold standard in laboratory medicine

AMT is mainly accepted down south, but is not as highly recognized

Certain states like California and Florida require an additional test for a state license to be a Medical Technologist

tissue samples, and blood, and to record and report results

Operate lab equipment and perform maintenance as needed

Study blood samples by counting cells, identifying abnormal cells, prepare blood for transfusions by checking blood type and compatibility testing

Demand Currently most labs today have the “baby

boomer” population which will increase the need for new laboratory specialists

The increase in technology leading to an older population and a society that has high cancer rates will have a demand for laboratory personnel to help diagnosis disease

Increase number of people who are insured due to ACA will lead to the rise of need of Medical Technologist along with other healthcare jobs
