Obituary.R. D. THOMSON, M.D., F.R.S.L. & E., F.R.C.P.

WE regret to have to announce the demise of this gentlemanon the 17th inst., at the residence of his brother, DunstableHouse, Richmond. Dr. Thomson was born in the year 1811,in the parish of Eccles, in Berwickshire, of which his fatherwas minister. He was educated for the medical profession inEdinburgh and Glasgow. In Glasgow he studied chemistryunder his uncle, Dr. Thomas Thomson, then Professor there;and in 1840 he was at Giessen under Liebig. After making onevoyage to India and China in the service of the East India

Company about lb35, he settled as a physician in London, andtooklan active part in the establishment of the Blenheim-streetSchool of Medicine.At an early period of his career he applied his chemical

knowledge to the investigation of a variety of physiologicalquestions-the composition of the blood, especially in cholera,amongst others; and he soon made himself a reputation as acorrect and philosophical observer. He was employed byGovernment to make a series of experiments on the food ofcattle, and to analyse the water supplied by the differentLondon companies. His researches on the constituents of foodin relation to the systems of animals have long been a standardsource of reference for physiologists pursuing similar inquiries,and have served as a basis for much of the progress of moderndietetical science. They had extended circulation amongst thescientific world here, and passed through two American editions.In 1841 he went to Glasgow as an assistant to his illustriousuncle, the Professor of Chemistry, whose failing health requiredassistance, and who died in 1852. Dr. Thomson was un-successful as candidate for the chair and returned to London,where he was appointed Lecturer on Chemistry to St. Thomas’sHospital ; and when medical officers of health were appointedunder the Metropolitan Local Management Act, he was thesuccessful candidate for St. Marylebone. This appointmentwas admirably fitted to bring out his abilities. He devotedhimself with great zeal and industry to the organization of asystem of inspection in that extensive parish. In this difficultundertaking he was so successful that his colleagues were gladto follow in his steps ; and when they formed themselves intoa.n Association of Health Officers they ultimately appointedhim their president. Dr. Dundas Thomson took always aleading part in the discussion of sanitary questions, as he wasqualified to do; and the position which he held among hiscompeers in the metropolis was worthy of the great boroughwhich he represented. From his position as a health officerhe became widely known as an authority on sanitary matters.He was employed by the Itegistrar-General to make a monthlyreport of the amount of impurity in the waters of the differentLondon companies.

For the last; two years his health (long robust) had begun tofail, but it is only within the last few months that his friendshave felt seriously uneasy. For more than a month he wasunable to leave his room, and he expired on Wednesday morn-ing at eleven A.M. At this late period of the week it is impos-sible for us to give a detailed account of his labours andworks, but we hope to be able to return to the subject.

Dr. Thomson was loved and admired by his friends ; andhis conduct as the health officer of the largest parish in themetropolis commanded the respect of the public, who are

indebted to him for services which are not yet fully appreciated.The vestry of 8t. Marylebone will find it difficult to select ashis successor one who combines in his character the courage,honesty, practical sagacity, and profound scientific attainmentswhich adorned the man whose loss we deplore. We sincerelytrust that they will use their utmost efforts to seek a successorworthy to tread in his steps.

ARMY MEDICAL SCHOOL.

THE following questions were submitted at the examination at the close ofthe eighth session of the Army Medical School, Royal Victoria Hospital,Netley, between July 26th and August 3rd, 1864:-

A.-WRITTEN QUESTIONS.Military Surgery (Professor T. LONGMORE).

1. Mention the several purposes for which the convex and concave spectaclesare supplied in the regimental optical and ophthalmoscopic case of instru-ments, and describe the method of using them in conjunction with the testtypes for distinguishing emmetropia, myopia, hypermetropia, whether simpleor complicated with presbyopia or amblyopia. Explain the theory on whichthe diagnosis in each instance is established.

2. Describe the nature, effects, and proper treatment of osteo-myelitia afterganshot injuries of long bones, or of amputations consequent upon them.

3. Describe accurately, step by step, the operations of excising the shoulder-and elbow-joints, each by a single linear incision as practised in the post-mortem room.

Military Medicine (Professor W. C. MA-CLEAN, M.D.)1. From what date may cholera be said to have engrafted itself on the

epidemics of the soil of India ? What are the conditions which appear to actmust powerfully as predisposing causes of the disease? What influence dohigh or low situations respectively exert-

a. On the proportionate mortality of those attacked?b. On the proportionate number of those seized ?

Explain in what way excessively long marches appear to increase the virulenceof an epidemic of this disease in soldiers, native or European, in India. Givean accurate description of the premonitory and actual symptoms,

a., in the slight,b, in the severe forms of the disease,

and describe the effects of its presence on the blood and secretions. What arethe chief points to keep in view in our endeavour to exclude this disease fromgarrisons, camps, and cantonments, and to mitigate the severity of an epi.demic when it appears ? particularly stating in what stage and to what extent opium is used and safe.2. What is the average weight of the liver, in health, in a man between the

3. Give as complete an account as you can of the therapeutic uses andvalue of ipecacuanha in tropical medicine.

Military Hygiene (Professor E. A. PARKES, M.D., F.R.S.)1. What are the chief causes and effects of impurity of air in the habita-

tions of men ?2. How would you determine the amount of carbonic acid, watery vapour,

and suspended matters in the air ?3. Enumerate the principal adulterations of wheat-flour, and state how yoa.

would determine,a, the quality of the flour;b, the presence of pea-flour, oats, and maize.

4. What has been the medical history of the West Indies as far as Europeansare concerned ? State explicitly what you would do in a West Indian stationif there occurred,

a, a considerable yearly number of diarrhceal and dysenteric cases;b, a considerable number of admissions from typhoid fever;c, a number of admissions from paroxysmal fever;d, occasional outbreaks of yellow fever.

Pathology (Professor W. AiTKEN, M.D.)1. Give a classified account of the lesions in the kidney which were demon-

strated during the past session in the practical room.2. Describe the nature and probable origin of the parasitic cyst in the liver

which proved fatal in the case of Private -, as shown at the post-mortem’

examination of June 28th, 1864.3. Mention the period of incubation and describe the course and progress

of an infecting venereal sore, and contrast your account with similar detailsrelative to venereal sores which do not infect the system.

B.-PRACTICAL EXAMINATION.
