HORROR TEASER TRAILER

HORROR RESEARCH

The aim of all horror films is to create a suspense for the audience as well as fear. Some sub- genres like supernatural may have an unseen killer which will create more of a suspense as the audience won’t know when an event is going to take place. This is more psychological to play with the emotions of the audience. Other genres such as teen slasher’s have the purpose of having a more thrilling effect through the use of gore and graphical scenes of violence in order to create a fearful outcome from the audience watching. When creating my horror teaser trailer I will take into consideration the fact that most horror films have a demon or a killer in the film which is what will also appear in my horror trailer.

SLASHER RESEARCH

•  An example of a slasher is Halloween (2007)

Why? -masked psychopath killer -graphic acts of murder. -A chase scene to build up the fear of the audience

Page 4: Mediaa

TEEN SLASHER RESEARCH

•  Friday 13th is an example of a teen slasher.

WHY? -  Masked

unknown murderer

-  A group of teens who are the killers target.

-  Usually set in a

wood/ old building.

SUPERNATURAL HORROR

•  Paranormal Activity (2007) is an example of a supernatural horror.

•  WHY? •  Emotional reaction from

audience by playing with there fears.

•  Intrusion of an evil force. •  Ghost/ unseen demons to

create a suspense throughout the film.

Page 6: Mediaa

OUTCOME OF RESEARCH

•  I have took some of these features into consideration and decided some aspects I will use in my trailer.

In paranormal activity I like how it is an independent film which I would be able to create myself. Due to the fact it has been made by someone at home I could also do something similar to this with the props and software (apple mac) available for my use.

In Friday 13th I like how the director has managed to use teens within the genre. I will use people of this age in my film due to the target audience being 15+. This will make the audience feel more involved if it is of there age group the actors who star in the trailer.

PLOT IDEA 1- SUPERNATURAL/EXORCISM

•  I have decided on the

title EVIL EYES. This is relevant to my following ideas;

•  A teenage girl who has grown up in an old derelict town full of empty buildings who has always had a good future ahead of her until possession takes place.

•  This possession will be supernatural as certain events will start happening.

•  My plot will also be based on an exorcism which will be performed by the family priest. Where the girl will gain evil abnormal eyes to represent the devil in her.

•  I will have an ending to the film as a cliff hanger to who’s body the demon has gone into which could be carried on in the next film.

Page 8: Mediaa

TO REACH THIS PLOT

•  Actors- I won’t include many actors as I only have access to a few actors. I will include a priest, a friend, and a girl who is possessed.

•  Props- The props for this plot that I will need access too are a bed/ table in which the possessed girl will lie on, a priest outfit, fake blood and show makeup.

•  Sound - I will create my own soundtrack for this film. I will use diegetic sound

throughout the film where I will include voices from the characters, sounds made by objects in the story and music represented as coming from instruments in the story space ( source music) I will also use non diegetic sound when using sound effects which is added for the dramatic effect as well as mood music.

•  Location- I will use an old building site to create my trailer. This will be at the beginning of the trailer to show where the character has grown up. I will then film the outside of a church to represent the area where the exorcism has been filmed. Due to not having access to the inside of a church I will film the exorcism from the inside of a classroom at college which I will decorate to look like a church

PLOT IDEA 2- TEEN SLASHER

•  I have decided on the title ‘The Lurker’

•  A group of teenagers go to a holiday home in a surrounded woodland area. Was this the right decision?

•  The film will slowly kill off each teen character with a masked man with an axe who will lurk around the cabin and woods.

•  This plot idea will be filled with gore and suspense as well as having a thrilling aspect to it.

Page 10: Mediaa

TO REACH THIS PLOT

•  Actors- the actors used within this trailer will be teenagers (17-20) I will be able to access these kind of actors from college. I will also need a man who will star as ‘The Lurker’

•  Props- The props I will need for this plot will be old clothes that are ripped to show the victims being tortured. Also fake blood and a fake axe which I will be able to get from the joke shop.

•  Sound- I will use diegetic sound throughout when showing the actors screaming as well as sounds made by surrounding objects.

•  Location- the location I will use for this story line will be a near bye woods in Denton which I will be able to access easily.

Page 11: Mediaa

SOUND IDEAS

•  I have developed sound ideas in more detail.

•  In many trailers I have watched like insidious, jaws etc. there is a song which is used throughout to represent the film in order to create the audience to recognise the film just by hearing the theme tune. This creates an identity of the film.

•  When analysing the horror trailers I recognised that they tend to use lots of diegetic sound to represent whispers, screams and conversations the characters have. This makes the trailer more interesting and adds up a feel for the characters and what kind of trailer this will be.

•  Silence used in trailers also has a huge effect as it creates a tense atmosphere and builds up the feeling of suspense. It keeps the audience on the edge of there seats due to them being oblivious to what is coming next.

•  Throughout trailers tags are also used. Sometimes these are voiced in with a voice over which is usually very loud. I have took this into consideration and think including a whisper in my film to support any sub-genre will make the audience filled with fear.

Page 12: Mediaa

LOCATIONS •  I have took my locations into further research and

decided on specific locations.

THE LURKER A derelict or unused building will be used. I will also use a forest/woods.

Evil Eyes I will use an old church An old derelict council estate A classroom to film exorcism

Page 13: Mediaa

TYPICAL DIRECTION

•  If I was to choose my ‘EVIL EYES’ plot I would make sure to use research I have done on other similar trailers of this sub-genre (paranormal activity) I would take all of the terrifying aspects and emerge them all into my trailer in order to create the best trailer I can. •  In order to make it as appealing and interesting to

the audience I will also look at magazines and film posters in order to make my professional looking and being exactly what the target audience are looking for.

Page 14: Mediaa

CINEMATOGRAPHY

•  I will use a wide shot at the beginning of the trailer in order to show the derelict area.

•  I will also use long shots to create a full introduction and understanding of the character, how they dress, and also there current emotions.

•  The use of medium shots will be used throughout in order to show the characters facial expressions as well as there posture. This will help the audience understand exactly how they are feeling, this will also help to create emotion

•  Over the shoulder shots will be used to help the audience understand the character from the point of view.

•  High and low angles shots will be used to create a sense of dominance and will make it clear to the audience which characters are more powerful.

•  I will make sure to use close ups and extreme close- ups in order to show the fear on the victims faces as well as showing the face and the eyes of the girl who has been possessed.

Page 15: Mediaa

EDITING

•  Throughout the trailer I will make sure to use a series of jump cuts in order to create danger and panic throughout. It will also give the audience a quick image of the important scenes throughout the trailer which include more fear. This also helps to include more of the story line in the trailer.

•  Dissolves and fades will also be relevant in this case I will use these to show the different derelict areas of where the girl originally lives which holds a great importance in the film.

•  Cutaways are also effective as it includes all the interesting parts in the trailer as the director is able to delete out the boring bits. I will use this when showing the exorcism.

Page 16: Mediaa

MISE-EN-SCENE

•  I will make sure to use high key lighting at the beginning of the trailer to show the derelict estate which will fade into low key lighting to show the different moods and the haunted atmosphere which relates to horror films.

•  I am going to do further research on the costumes and makeup for the characters in order to make them have the best effect on the audience. To do this I will watch horror films and makes notes on the costumes that they wear.

•  I will use a variety of colours but the main one will be red to show violence, danger and anger which is what my film is based on.

Page 17: Mediaa

HOW I WILL LINK IT TO MY ANCILLARY TASKS

•  In order to link my trailer to the poster and magazine I will make sure to use the same colour scheme and layout throughout all tasks for example paranormal activity have used blue thoroughly to create a supernatural feel. This will make it clear to the audience the themes that are going to be used.

•  I will make the costumes clear to my target audience by using the same Mise-en-scene in the trailer, poster and magazine cover.

•  Tags that I have used will be in the same font style in order to create a link between the three.

Page 18: Mediaa

WHAT I WILL NEED TO INCLUDE IN MY TRAILER

•  I will need appropriate props of which I will gather from charity shops/ joke shops. i.e. for a slasher I will need a fake knife, fake blood etc.

•  Suitable locations such as stranded old building sites, woods, homes, schools etc. depending on which horror sub-genre I choose to do.

•  I will use the trailers which I have researched to gather an idea of which makeup/ costumes will be relevant to my chosen sub- genre. In order to create representations and characters.

•  I will need reliable, available actors in order to meet my deadline. I will do this by making dates for when I will film.

•  I will take my research into consideration of what makes a good trailer and know how to use software and equipment and know when I have access to this in order to get the best shots and emerge them together on final cut.
