Analyzing Magazines - NME 3rd
September Issue.
The magazine is called NME which stands for New Musical Express. This is because
NME prides itself on bringing new interesting music to its readers. This is what makes thismagazine unique, as it brings the newest and freshest music to its readers. The connotations
that are given are that the reader will feel good to hear about music that hasn’t been heard
of before as it would expand theyre musical variety and if they are reading a music
magazine they would love finding new music.
NME is published by ‘Time Inc’ a company who publish magazines, comic and various
books. The magazine mainly publishes only music, but has the occasional advertisement for
films. Also, NME has its own radio station, so that is frequently mentioned within the
mgazine. This expands its audience. NME costs £2.40 and is available every week on aWednesday from all decent newsagents. NME’s circulation is 56,284 people per week, and
its readership figures is 411,000 people. The magazine has a website that displays the latest
music news, shows videos of band interviews and has its own shop. Where music t-shirts
and other clothing types can be bought.
I believe that teenagers are the target market for NME because at that age many
teens become interested in music and it plays an important role in their lives. I know this
because of the types of arcticles in NME. For example this week features a review of
Reading and Leeds Festivals, this will prove most interesting to teenagers as they are the
ones who take up the majority of people who attend these types of festivals. The reader can
interact with the magazine in a various amount of ways. Like sending in pictures of when
they met a band, or simply emailing the magazine sharing an experience from a gig they
have been to.
The cover features images of many bands, but mainly two bands with a big headline
stating the band names, ‘The Strokes + Pulp’. This would instantly draw any fan of these into
the magazine. It also has a backgound image of the two lead singers of each band looking at
the camera, or as it would seem, to the reader. The language used also appealsto the reader
as the word ‘smash’ is used, this is a violent word so would apeal to a teenager who is a fan
of these bands. The magazine cover aslo states that FREE MASSIVE POSTERS are inside, this
is an instant attraction as the customer will receive free gifts so is a selling point for the
magazine. It also uses big bold headlines to catch the eye, not so much fancy writing that
some magazines opt for. It doesn’t really look like other magazines as it would be unique for
the amount of music crammed into one front cover. This would be appealing as it would
seem to the reader to be interesting and full of music that they are looking for.
I notice about the magazines presentation is that it how quiet a random layout.
Straplines and images scattered across pages, this gives it an effect that looks almost

unproffesional but would really appeal to teenagers. But at the same time the layout is very
structured and easy to follow. The magazine doesn’t look cheap nor expensive, it looks
proffesional and also has an effect of it being a cool magazine to buy. The magazines main
rival is ‘Q’ magazine. This appears to be more proffesional and organised, and Q also
features a wider range of music. So it depends on the taste of the buyer to which one ischosen. NME usually uses many bright colours that draw attention. It uses images a lot and
they make the magazine look good and actually show the reader the bands they are reading
about. Which I think is a good point.
NME adresses its readers by using attention grabbing straplines and bright colours.
Also judging the headline band each week that will interest the reader. The NME is quiet a
personal magazine as it makes jokes to the readers in some captions and I believe this is a
good selling point as the reader will feel as if the magazine is specifically talking to them.
Readers can adress the magazine at any time through email, also once a year the NMEAwards take place allowing the readers to vote for bands that they choose. NME contains
arcticles such as gig revievs, album reviews, the most interesting news in music and the
freshest upcoming bands. It also tells the reader when bands are touring, this gives the
reader information on how to see their favourite bands live. Subjects range from average
music information, to festival higlights, album verdicts and rumours of specific bands
splitting up.
The main advertisements in the magazine are band tour dates. It features page after
page of different venues that are hosting certain bands. For example in this issue ‘Kasabian’s
arena tour is mention and advertised throughout. But also the odd advertisment is spotted
for individual companys selling clothes are musical equipment. These are aimed at musical
people and general fans of music, of whom like to go to shows and see bands live. These ads
are featured a lot as the NME prides itself on helping bands get known to the public, for
example a band could put themselves in an AD in the magazine then more people will come
to their show. The models featured in these advertisements will usually be the band or a
band representative. This would be done to show if a band is appealing, or for example if a
reader likes punk rock, and see a band with stereotypically ripped jeans, tatoos and spikey
hair. They will link the band to their interest and will want to find out more about them.
Men and women arent really represented differently in the magazine. Men are
featured more frequently as the majority of band members are men. These representations
don’t affect the readership as girls will be as interested as the male band members as males
themselves. Theres is a limited range of representation as men and women as they can only
go so far as to be in a band, as they wont really have need in a music magazine. Sporting
groups and anything non-music related do not appear in NME. As it is specifically a music
magazine that would be innapropiate and pointless. Many celebrities are featured in the
magazine, for example on the cover of this issue. Julian Casablancas appears on the cover,
he is a hig-profiled lead singer of the rock band ‘The Strokes’. The only celebrities that

feature are band members in this magazine. This is to interest the reader as to see these
band celebrities is the reason they purchase NME each week.
Titles such as Q magazine and Kerrang magazine are the main musical competetors
to NME. Q features more of the common music as some would say mainstream, whereas
Kerrang features the more hardcore side of music which differs it to NME. Kerrangs
circulation is 42,967 which means NME is bought by more people each week. But ‘Q’
magazines figures are 88,240 people each month. This means that they get more purchases
but in a longer space of time. Kerrangs weekly issue is £3.20 and Q magazine’s monthly issue
is £3.99. This proves NME to be the cheapest amongst its competetors.
I believe this magazine is popular because it focuses strongly on the newest music
available, and this has a wide appeal to the majority of its target audience. The NME offers
an interesting read to its readers suppling them with any music lovers vital information
about upcoming shows and reviews of albums they are tempted to buy ect. The magazine
doesn’t imply and values but does stick to a certain genre of music, the rock/indie scene, it
would be unlike them to do a report on any other type of music.
