◊ THIS ARTISTS’ LIFE

April 7, 2010

I had things to do today. The house needs to be cleaned, and the bills need to be paid. I even had other things to write today. I could have found a job, written something to make someone some money. But I am pulled toward this page; I can’t tear my mind away.

Sitting down to put words on the page puts me in a different place, a place where I am a writer, and I quickly allow everyday annoyances like work and money to slip my mind to make room for the fantasies that dance around the edges all day. I am slowly transformed into the creature who lives within those fantasies, rather than a woman who deals with the everyday drudgery of things like bills and school work and laundry and dishes…

That’s how I got here. Once, I was a wife and a student and a retail clerk. We were going to buy a house, maybe, and I would get a better job after graduation. We could have had kids, maybe, someday. We had a cat and a car and a mild vision for a future. The life of the artist has no room for that kind of comfort.

I have the artist’s soul, the desire to be something other than what is, the desire to create something that does not exist. These are the eyes with which an artist sees the world, the ability to see that what we want is possible. Eyes that overlook this place we are in.

This is what I mean when I say “artist”, when I call the people around me “artists”, when I say I live in this artists’ life. A desire to love those with soul, to love those who create. A desire to be surrounded by art and spirit, surrounded by the euphoric vibe of creative vision always coming to life. A desire to earn my living by sharing my work, by sharing in the work of artists, by shaping the work of dreamers. I want to never again sell my soul and my time to corporate greed and capitalist ambition, but to bare my soul to the world for just rewards.
