MEDIA RELEASE

Varley Electric Vehicles Plugs into Electric Vehicle Market with Introduction of the
evR‐450 Supercar
Varley Electric Vehicles, a division of The Varley Group, one of Australia’s oldest and most respected
specialty vehicle manufacturers, has launched the evR‐450, an ultra‐high‐performance electric supercar.
Officially unveiled in Newcastle, New South Wales at the company’s 125‐year anniversary celebration on
Friday, 2 December 2011, the evR‐540 electric supercar marks a new day in the history of The Varley Group.
‘Varley recognises the market potential for electric vehicles in Australia and globally and we are investing
heavily in the technology,’ said John Bettini, Manager of the Electric Vehicles Division. ‘We have a long‐
standing history of making specialty vehicles for a range of clients and today marks our entry into the
mainstream market with this new, high performance technology.’
‘We aim to provide our customers, now and in future, with world class EV capabilities and products. The
evR‐450 is our first example of this.’
The evR‐450 electric supercar is Varley’s first vehicle showcasing leading electric drive technology
engineered and manufactured in Australia. A true hand‐built sports car, the evR‐450 is developed on a
race‐proven aluminum monocoque chassis and powered by its all electric AC driveline and state‐of ‐the‐art
lithium‐ion battery pack and power electronics. At the heart of the driveline are patented twin Carbon
ironless core AC motors which use proprietary ‘Dynamic Overspeed’ to allow great motor flexibility and
performance. The motors were custom‐designed exclusively for the evR by Ultramotive Technologies, and
are complemented by Tritium’s highly efficient Wavesculptor inverters. Capable of up to 96 per cent peak
efficiency, the evR‐450 driveline is one of the most efficient electric drivelines in the world.
‘Varley was impressed to learn that some of the best electric vehicle technologists are developing products
in our own backyard,’ said Bettini. ‘We decided that we could leverage that innovation to compliment the
high‐quality, high‐volume engineering and manufacturing capabilities at Varley to cultivate a new market
for electric vehicles in Australia.’
The evR450 offers race‐quality performance and boasts a 0‐100km of 3.8 seconds and top speed of 180
kilometres per hour. While the evR‐450 is expected to be available soon, Varley will begin taking orders for
its sport variant the evS‐450 in January 2012. Providing similar performance to the evR, the evS‐450 has a
top speed of 160 kilometres per hour and can travel 0‐100km in 4.6 seconds.
Bettini offers, ‘We wanted to give our customers the option of a sport version as not everyone is
comfortable with a race‐spec car for day‐to‐day driving. We’re excited that we can start taking orders for
the evS in January next year.’

Both the evR‐450 and its sport variant are powered by a high‐performance lithium‐ion battery pack and use
no petrol whatsoever. Drivers will have access to 24kWh of battery energy, enabling them to travel up to
160 kilometres (combined cycle) before having to recharge.
‘Motorists today tend to drive less than 40 kilometres per day, so 160 kilometres range will be plenty for
most drivers. Those wanting to take the evR for a Sunday joy ride should have no trouble driving for a few
hours.’
The evR can be recharged in eight hours using a standard 15‐amp power point, either at home, work, or in
many public car parks. Varley will consider faster charging capabilities in future products.
‘We have developed a unique design that is not only functional and scalable, but will create excitement and
passion in true car enthusiasts. We think our entry into the sports car market captures the spirit of the
traditional supercar, but using highly efficient and zero emission Australian technology,’ said Bettini.
