Summary All the technologies included in this media

presentation have contributed to social change.

New medical technologies that are developed in the future will also greatly impact the social change.

Technology would be able to be developed faster if there weren't as many opposes and cons to these new technologies

If humans focused on promoting instead of opposing new technologies they could have a great positive effect on social change.

Technology has had a great influence on modern medicine.

Cutting edge surgical tools.

KRAS Testing for Colorectal Cancer

Medical clamps that can stop traumatic wound bleeding in a matter of seconds.

Devices that detect pre-seizure electrical activity.

Brain implants that let paralyzed patients move a robot arm.

Devices that help seniors regain their independence.

Cutting Edge Surgical ToolsLasers can be used instead of scalpels for very careful

surgical work, such as repairing a damaged retina in the eye or cutting through body tissue.

It can cut or vaporize tissue with fairly little bleeding as the light energy changes to heat.

The heat produced by lasers helps sterilize the edges of the body tissue that it’s cutting, reducing the risk of infection.

Laser equipment costs a lot of money and is bulky compared with the usual surgical tools used. But advances in technology are slowly helping reduce their cost and size.

The effects of some laser treatments may not last long, so they may need to be repeated. And sometimes the laser cannot remove all of the tumor in one treatment, so more treatments may be needed

KRAS Testing for Colorectal Cancer

Testing for the most common KRAS mutations will find most of the gene changes prevent EGFR targeted therapy from working

KRAS testing doesn't look at other tumor genes that can also affect how you respond to cancer treatments.

Recent studies show that mutations, like KRAS mutations, cause EGFR-targeted therapy not to work. Testing for mutations is separate from KRAS testing. It should be considered when KRAS mutation testing is normal.

The “ITClamp”

With this clamp it wouldn't matter if you were a medic or soldier, this idea is just simple, and anyone could self-treat or treat a buddy within seconds of the injury

The clamp can stop wounds from bleeding.

The clamp can potentially save lives.

The clamp could cause infection if not used properly

The clamp does not stop internal bleeding.

Early Warning Software that Detects Seizure

Of the 50 million people worldwide are estimated to have epilepsy.

Implantable devices that detect pre-seizure electrical activity.

This technology is still under development, it can also produces false positives, causing devices to send currents to the brain when the seizure is not occurring.

Too many false alarms can shorten the life of the battery that powers the device, which must be replaced surgically

Brain Implant that Let Paralyzed Patients Move a

Robot ArmPeople with a long history of quadriplegia can

successfully manipulate a mind-controlled robot arm with seven axes of movement.

This technology, which interprets brain signals to guide a robot arm, has enormous potential that scientists are continuing to explore

Training on the BCI allows patients to move an arm and manipulate objects.

This technology is still under development

This new form of technology can produce a high cost.

Devices that Help Seniors Regain their

Independence In todays society there are multiple devices that help

seniors regain their independence.

Advancements in medical technology allow elders to live a long peaceful life.

The grand care system is a high tech sensor system that is installed around the home that can send reports to family members across the globe.

You cannot attach GrandCare system to your own computer

The GrandCare’s hardware/software solution pricing can be an issue depending on the system you choose, your budget and alternatives

Conclusions In conclusion there are many moral issues, ethical issues

and risks associated with these new technologies.

These issues and risks need to be resolved or assessed to create a positive impact on social change.

As the technology's advance, they will have a great impact on the medical field.

There are always new products being developed to enhance our quality of life

The positive of these technologies outweigh their negatives and are a risk society is willing to take to save our bodies and mind.
