Organic
The organic ideology suggests a more natural approach to artists that are successful due to their talent but are only slightly helped by record companies.
The image of the artist is only ‘enhanced’ by a record company and they are given time to improve and progress throughout their career.
Keith Neegus’ Theory
He believes that there are two types of artists – synthetic and organic.
These two theories shape the way are artist’s image/career is developed.
Organic artists are often aimed at more sophisticated audiences and are often seen as ‘innocent’ and not based on sexualisation.
Organic artists have ownership over their identity and image so they are themselves and they are individual.
His image
His look is very boy next door/relaxed and not trying hard. He has his own style and wears what he likes.
He is naturally good looking with a natural charm. His blonde floppy hair would become a trademark. He is often
seen playing guitar and can play piano too. This shows he is versatile and talented.
Odell grew up listening to Elton John and is a fan of Arcade Fire, Beach House, Cat Power and Radiohead.
He moved to London after school to be in a band ‘Tom and the Tides’ but soon decided to go solo.
He was discovered by Lilly Allen’s label and is now signed to an imprint of Colombia Records.
He writes his own songs
Tom is a singer-songwriter showing he is talented not only singing and playing instruments but he can write music.
“I find that I write much better songs when I’m being honest, and writing about things that happen to me. It can get a little weird though…”
He has written 3 songs in his most recent and succesuful album; ‘Cant pretend’, ‘Hold me’ and ‘Another love’.
Success
Tom has done quite well and is now become more renown. His song ‘Another Love’ has 4.5 million views on YouTube and he is becoming a lot more popular. As you can see above, Tom has been
nominated for MTV and BBC music awards for a new comer but he won a BRIT award in 2013 which he was very happy with and has shown that he is real competition.
Synthetic
The synthetic ideology suggests that artists are the opposite of organic. They are attempts to create successful acts by a record company.
A record company will mold a artist into a specific image they want to create profit and get lots of sales. The record company does all the work, not the artist!
Keith Neegus’ Theory
He believes that synthetic artists are used for single sales but not albums.
Synthetic artists are often aimed at younger, less sophisticated audiences who enjoy a tune or too.
Profits made are immediate and a short term strategy by a record company for money.
His imageHis perfectly manicured hair and ‘trendy’ styling shows he keeps up an image.
He wears sunglasses and chains showing he’s cool, Justin is always photo ready.Justin also
tends to flaunt off his (non-existent) abs making him attracting to some girls.
A video was posted on YouTube of Justin singing ‘So Sick’ by Neyo which became an internet sensation.
Justin Bieber was discovered in 2008 by American talent manager Scooter Braun.
Justin was interested in playing music from the age of 4 and learnt how to play piano, drums, guitar etc.
