Positioning• In the opening titles there are extreme close

up’s of the text and actors. This is to give the audience and in sight to the story line and information upon who and what is involved within the film.

Lighting• The lighting in this scene is brighter on the subject to reflect

his importance and highlight his movements as the audience are unaware of this personality at this stage.

• Along with this the background is a very dim lighting and unfocused to show it has no significance at this stage. The dim lighting also suggests suspicion as we are unaware of any other movements in the scene which links to the thriller genre.

Acting • Mr Phelps acts extremely relaxed whilst on the plane,

however makes no big hand gestures/movements. • This suggests he is a serious, calm man who gives no

impression of anything to anyone. This portrays him a mysterious man, which helps the audience to come up with their own conclusion of him.

Costume • Mr Phelps’ costume is a complete opposite as he is

wearing a professional, business suit whereas the air hostess is wearing a plain, casual uniform.

• These costumes contrast each other, showing the difference in status, importance and significance in the film.

Expression• The serious expression that Mr Phelps has

throughout the opening scene suggests that he is concentrating on his business, as the information presented is for his eyes only.

• This links to the thriller genre as secrecy is portrayed throughout and only one segment of the information is shared, which builds tension.

Setting• The opening scene shows Mr Phelps in First class,

showing that he is powerful and can afford that position on his transport.

• Along with this, the fact he is able to watch informative tapes that self destruct present to the audience that his work is private, which adds a sense of mystery as he is the only one aware of this particular business.
