MEDIA INFORMATION Wilmington Blue Rocks (62-76, 29-39) Carolina League Affiliate of the Kansas City Royals vs. Winston-Salem Dash (70-68, 32-36) Carolina League Affiliate of the Chicago White Sox Game No. 139 • Home Game No. 69 • Frawley Stadium • Sunday, September 1, 2013 • 1:35 p.m. BLUE ROCKS BREAKDOWN HOME: 33-35 | AWAY: 29-41 | STREAK: W2 | LAST 5: 3-2 | LAST 10: 6-4 PATIENCE PAYS OFF : Exercising extreme patience, the Wilmington Blue Rocks benefited from eight walks and a three-run fifth to defeat the Winston-Salem Dash, 8-3, on Saturday night at Frawley Stadium. The eight free rides are the third-most Vance Wilson’s club has received in a game this season, while the Rocks translated Dash control woes into six unanswered runs. With the victory, the Blue Crew kept their hopes of finishing with a .500 record at home alive. Wilmington is 33-35 in games played at the friendly confines of Frawley Stadium in 2013. DENNIS GOES DEEP: Dennis Raben had a monster night at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs. It was the eighth multi-homer game of his career, while it marked the second time in 2013 that Raben had hit a pair of home runs in a single contest. He last accomplished the feat on July 8 against Frederick at Frawley Stadium. In the process, it allowed him to regain the team home run lead from Justin Trapp. Currently up to 12 on the campaign, nine of Raben’s longballs have come on the Riverfront. Ending the month of August in style, the Rocks infielder batted .298 with five home runs and 14 RBIs over 27 games. BIG LEAGUERS MAKE BIG IMPACT: On Saturday, Wade Davis made his first appearance in a Blue Rocks uniform. Opening the season in the Kansas City rotation, the right-hander was transferred to Wilmington earlier on Saturday in preparation for a move to the Royals bullpen. Dominant over two innings in relief, he allowed just one hit and registered five strike outs. Louis Coleman also made his second appearance out of the bullpen after joining the Blue Rocks from Kansas City on Thursday. Coming on for the eighth inning, the righty struck out the side. Originally a fifth-round pick by the Royals out of LSU, Coleman also pitched for Wilmington during part of the 2009 season. In 10 games with the Rocks that year, he went 3-1 and tallied a 1.26 ERA. MORIN LOOKS TO FINISH STRONG: Mired in a 3-for-17 slump coming into Saturday, Parker Morin found his footing in the series opener with Winston-Salem, finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. It was his first multi-hit effort since August 13 versus Salem, while it moved his batting average back over the .220 mark. A player who is happy to see the calendar flip, Morin hit just .222 in August, while his season average never eclipsed the .230 plateau in the season’s second-to-last month. WINSTON WOES OVER?: After struggling against Winston-Salem for most of the season, the Blue Rocks picked up a decisive win in the series opener. Entering the game, Wilmington was just 3-14 against its Southern Division foe in 2013, while Saturday’s triumph was just the second over the Dash at Frawley Stadium this year. Meanwhile, the victory preserved the possibility of the Blue Rocks finishing .500 at home. To become reality, Wilmington needs to pull a sweep of the Dash. This season, Winston-Salem has only been swept on three occasions. SOMETHING TO DO THIS FALL: Wilmington pitcher Angel Baez will play for the Peoria Javelinas in the Arizona Fall League. Consisting of six different teams, the Arizona Fall League serves as an offseason training ground for some of minor league baseball’s top talent. Baez, 22, will be making his first trip to the Fall League. Rated the No. 18 prospect in the Royals system according to Baseball America, Baez is 2-1 with a 4.85 ERA in six games with the Blue Rocks in 2013. After missing more than three months with a broken hand, the Dominican native is 2-1 with a 5.28 ERA over three starts in August. Prior to rejoining Wilmington, Baez went 1-0 with a 2.51 ERA in eight games with the Royals’ rookie-league affiliate in Surprise. In 2012, he was named Kane County “Pitcher of the Year.” In addition to Baez, Wilmington will be well-represented in the Arizona Fall League by a number of former players. Among those who will also play for Peoria are Malcom Culver (2013) Cheslor Cuthbert (2012-13), Jorge Bonifacio (2013), Lane Adams (2012-13), Jason Adam (2012), Orlando Calixte (2012) and Noel Arguelles (2011). Tonight’s Starters WIL: RHP Leonel Santiago (3-3, 4.30) vs. W-S: RHP Bryan Blough (11-10, 3.97) Leonel Santiago makes his ninth start with the Blue Rocks on Sunday. In his last outing at Potomac on Monday, he tossed seven innings of one-run baseball but suffered a hard luck loss. It was the righty’s second straight seven-inning stint on the mound, while he has allowed just three runs over his last 14 frames. Santiago opened the season with Low-A Lexington, where he went 1-1 with a 3.54 ERA over four starts. His best outing came on July 4, when he twirled seven shutout innings against West Virginia. That was Santiago’s first victory in nearly two years, as he missed all of 2012 on account of right labrum surgery. Prior to getting injured, he was one of the top pitchers in the Midwest League. A midseason all-star, Santiago went 7-7 with a 3.06 ERA at Kane County in 2011. He was at his best from late-April to early May, tossing seven innings or more in five straight starts. Born in Santo Domingo, DR, the righty was signed by Kansas City as a non-drafted free agent in June 2007. He throws a fastball, slider and changeup. Bryan Blough makes his 28th start of the year and is coming off his finest outings of the season. Pitching against Myrtle Beach on Monday, he tossed a complete game shutout scattering only six hits. Sad to see the calendar flip, Blough posted a 1.91 ERA over five August starts. He currently is tied for the CL lead in victories (11) sharing the distinction with Rocks starter Sam Selman among others..He has also been an innings eater, as he leads the circuit with 165.2 frames worked. In 17 of his starts, he has thrown six innings or more. Hardly the “new kid on the block”, this is Blough’s second tour of duty with the Dash, after the native Georgian pitched 10 games (all in relief) for Winston-Salem in 2012, posting a 3.93 ERA in 18.1 innings pitched. Originally an 18th round draft pick out of Kennesaw State in 2011, Blough comes right at hitters with an over-the-top delivery. He showcases a fastball (88-92) and a slider with solid depth. DASH DROPPINGSHello Newman...: After guiding Rookie-Great Falls to a postseason berth in 2012, Ryan Newman begins his first season as Winston-Salem’s skipper. The son of former American League All-Star Jeff Newman, Ryan also managed Rookie-Bristol from 2009-2010. He also has managerial experience with the Detroit Tigers farm system .Newman replaces the 2012 CL Manager of the Year Tommy Thompson, who will manage the White Sox Low-A affiliate in Kannapolis. Newman will have big shoes to fill, considering Thompson led the Dash to the best mark in all of minor league baseball in 2012 (87-51).

Smith & Weston: Many quarterbacks have enjoyed fine baseball careers. Before playing for the Seattle Seahawks, Russell Wilson spent time in the Colorado Rockies farm system. John Elway was once a second round draft pick of the Yankees, and Dan Marino was originally drafted by the Royals in 1979, before going on to the University of Pittsburgh. While Marino eventually moved from the Panthers to the NFL, one ex-Pitt quarterback is now trying to reach the big leagues in baseball. Signed as a seventh round draft pick by the White Sox in 2011, catcher Kevan Smith broke Marino’s school passing record with 202 yards in his first game as a freshman at Pitt. “You kind of have the ball in your hand every play,” Smith told CSNChicago.com when asked about the similarities between playing quarterback and catcher. “You see the whole field and you’re kind of in control and know what everybody is doing. Everybody feeds off of you.” Not surprisingly, he totes a pretty good arm behind the plate, gunning down 37% (31-85) of would-be base-stealers in 2012 with Low-A Kannapolis. At the plate, Smith has shown off a solid bat and is capable of driving the ball to all fields. As a first-year pro, he hit .355 between Rookie-Great Falls and Bristol, while in 2012 he hit .281 between Kannapolis and Winston-Salem. Those numbers are good signs, but Baseball America says Smith still needs to get better at not chasing bad pitches. Behind the plate, the same publication notes that Smith has to become a better receiver, while his game-calling is “improving.”

Cup of Joe(y): Few players drafted by the White Sox in 2012 have made it to the Advanced-A level. But Joey DeMichele is one of the lucky ones. The last winner of the Pac-10 batting title during his sophomore season at Arizona State, DeMichele posted strong numbers during his first professional season at Low-A Kannapolis. Hitting a combined .275 between the Intimidators and Bristol of the Appalachian League, the Sox elected to push DeMichele to Advanced-A to start 2013. And while DeMichele has received high marks for excellent bat control and a smooth line drive swing, you may not be able to tell by the results so far. That can be attributed to a very slow April, where the Arizona native hit only .170 through his first 23 games. “Here [at Advanced-A] the pitchers are older and more experienced and their command is better,” DeMichele explained to ChicagoNow.com. “They have more of an idea of how they want to get you out, more of an approach, more intellectual. It’s all about adjustments here, there are guys in this league who are just about big league already, close to it.” But as the season has gone on, DeMichele has adjusted. In May, the lefty swinger hit nearly 100 pts better at the plate, while doubling his run production. “Hitting-wise, I’ve always believed if you can hit, you can hit,” DeMichele told SouthsideSox.com. “And that’ll be with you wherever you go.” One other thing that will stick with DeMichele are the lessons he learned about playing the infield. At Arizona State, he spent plenty of time taking ground balls under the watchful eye of Mike Benjamin. A 13-year Major League veteran, Benjamin helped transform the way DeMichele looked at himself as a middle infielder. “He was super,” DeMichele explained to the Chicago Tribune. “And not just because he played in the majors. He knows a lot about defense, and I think he helped me prove the critics wrong about my defense.” In the meantime, the White Sox are letting DeMichele mature on his own terms. Although the organization occasionally provides guidance, Chicago also wants its players figure things out individually, a philosophy that DeMichele thinks is important. “The beauty of the White Sox is that they let you play the way you want to play, and figure it out yourself,” he said to chicagonow.com. “From the beginning they have said it is your career. Take it where you want it to go.”

All in the Family: If you are a Farrell, baseball is part of your DNA. That’s no exception for Dash infielder Jeremy Farrell. His dad John is the manager of the Boston Red Sox, brother Shane works as an amateur scouting assistant for the Cubs, while youngest brother Luke was recently drafted by the Royals after an outstanding career at Northwestern. Growing up, the Farrell brothers were raised at the ballpark. “My brothers and I wouldn’t have had it any other way,” Farrell explained to the Dash Board. “It was a great way to grow up. We learned a lot and always had a great role model in our dad.” Following his example, Ferrell went on to play college baseball, rather than sign with Colorado, who selected him in the 41st round of the 2005 draft. Playing for the University of Virginia instead, the New Jersey native was named a Freshman All-American in 2006. Not a bad accolade, considering his predecessor was future Nationals All-Star Ryan Zimmerman. Two seasons later, the Pirates would come calling in the eighth round. And while it was in large part due to Farrell’s numbers, it also had to do with an early first impression Farrell made on Pirates general manager Neal Huntington as a teen, when Huntington was working for the Indians. “I hope this isn’t illegal, but he was working out with the Indians instructional league team when he was 16 and visiting his dad,” Huntington recalled to Pirates.com. “I remember watching him taking batting practice and taking ground balls and he belonged there, even at 16.” However, Farrell never quite found his niche with the Pirates organization. In five years, he never advanced past Triple-A, leading the two sides to part ways before the start of the 2013 regular season. Fortunately for Farrell, the White Sox came calling, signing the veteran infielder to on opening day. “Obviously that was my first time being a free agent, but I was fortunate enough to latch on with a quality organization over here with the White Sox,” he told the Roanoke Times. “It’s been nothing but great people and I’ve really enjoyed my time here.”
