SUGARING OFF Spring thaw is upon us, and the maple trees of Canada
give o their delicious bounty. e better news is that maple syrup is good for
you, too. Janet Eagleson and Rosemary Hasner, the authors of The Maple Syrup

phosphorous. And, at just 40 calories a teaspoon (white sugar clocks in at 55),
you can use it just about anywhere you’d use regular sugar (in marinades, salad
dressings, even as a glaze for salmon). Try Can-Natur, new all-natural Canadian-

MODERN FAMILY When Canadian filmmaker and actress Nia Vardalos graced our May 2010 cover, she had recently become the proud mother of a three-year-old adopted girl. Vardalos had been a spokesperson for National Adoption Day in 2009 and, at the time of our interview, was preparing for the release of Larry Crowne, a film she co-wrote with Tom Hanks. Fast-forward to 2013, and the My Big Fat Greek Wedding star has written her first book, Instant Mom, about the long and winding ➔

As Downton Abbey enters its third season, the costumes take a deli-cious turn for the languid shapes and pastoral colours of the early
1920s, leaving behind the drab, utilitarian styles of the First World War that occupied most of the episodes of the previous season.
This was a pivotal moment in fashion as women got rid of restrictive cor-sets, waistlines dropped to skim the hips, dresses hung fluidly allowing for more mobility and hemlines crept up daringly above the ankle. Accessories also amped up the luxury factor with lengthy ropes of pearls, bejewelled hair bands brought attention to the short Marcel waves, and hats became more festively decorated with florals and feathers. This all laid the foundation for the outrageous styles of the flappers that was to come later in the decade.
But almost a century later, the fashion world is still in love with the refined elegance and romantic style of this era. For example, the look has been a per-ennial of the Ralph Lauren ethos. This season, cloche hats, jewelled head-bands and long necklaces get a modern update and make a return.
If Highclere Castle – the stately home where Downton Abbey is filmed – is one of the stars of the show, the costumes in season 3 will definitely be com-peting for attention among the grand ballrooms. —Derick Chetty

Fresh Bloomsapril showers have given way to may flowers. 1. Perhaps it’s the fact that Washington, D.C., is in the limelight or that the Japanese influence is on the fashion map, but the cherry blossom, ubiquitous in both the U.S. capitol and the Land of the Rising Sun, is inspiring design, including this ring that’s pretty as a posy. “With flame orange on the outer edges of the petals changing to bright yellow inside the centre of the flower, it really will brighten up your garden or planters.” PC Super Gigantico Dahlia Dahlinova Hypnotica Tequila Sunrise, Loblaws, Real Canadian Superstore, Your Independent Grocer, Fortinos, Zehrs and select Valu-mart stores
PurPle reignS“2013 brings us the new Osteo 3-D series annuals in Berry White (shown here), a fabulous two-tone double flower with a purple tufted centre against a circle of white ‘petals’ (these are actually florets),” says Judy Shirriff, category business manager, live goods, Canadian Tire.
Purple is classic, she adds, “a tone that complements other colours well, works with saturated or muted palettes and can be moody or playful.” Bottom line: While most Osteopermums close at night, says Shirriff, the Osteo 3-Ds stay open after dark so their flowers can be seen and enjoyed into the evening hours. “This is a huge benefit for homeowners who don’t always get to enjoy their gardens during the day. Plus, it is cool tolerant, making it available early in the season, has a highly textured fringed appearance and is stunning by itself or in combination with other plants in the landscape, baskets and containers.” Canadian Tire —VV
