Behind the Name

The hawk is a soaring bird of prey, displaying laser-

sharp vision and remarkable intelligence. The Guelph

Nighthawk is a nocturnal species, taking off at the crest

of nightfall from its nest in the conservation lands,

gliding smoothly and gracefully through the air before

swooping in upon its prey at the Sleeman Centre.

Similar to the city which adorns its name, the Nighthawk

utilizes its superior intelligence to strategically exploit

its strengths over the opposition. The Nighthawk

perfectly embodies the city of Guelph- elegant and

graceful as it soars high above, ultimately employing its

vast intellect and superior vision in pursuit of victory

over its prey.

The Guelph Nighthawks Professional Basketball Club entered the Guelph community with the official unveiling of the team name and marks in June of 2018. Since the club’s inception it has been our privilege to play in front of one of the loudest and most passionate fan bases, and for a community that so deeply cares about supporting its local sport teams and athletes.

The Nighthawks core mission is to be leaders in the community and champions on the basketball court. Together, with our fans and the support of this community, we have the opportunity to not only bring home a championship trophy that we can collectively raise above our heads, but to do so while being active leaders that supports all members of our community as we together aspire to achieve greatness in our everyday lives.

Our promise to the Guelph community is that the Nighthawks will outwork, outperform and overdeliver our competition, every day. Whether it be at practice, on game day or in the front office, competition is the mindset that drives us.

I personally could not be more privileged to call Guelph home to Nighthawks basketball. We are a small but proud community. What we lack in size compared to other Canadian Elite Basketball League markets we make up for in heart and an unwavering support for our city and our sports teams.

Now it’s our turn to go out on the court, compete, reciprocate that incredible support and enthusiasm of our community, and bring the CEBL Championship Trophy back to Guelph.

President

Cameron Kusch joins the Guelph team from Vancouver, where he has spent the better portion of the last sixteen years immersed in the Canadian sport industry. Cameron has been directly involved with some of the most influential and internationally recognizable sporting events in this country, including the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, HSBC World Rugby Canada Sevens, the PGA & LPGA Tour and the Canadian Football League’s Grey Cup.

Cameron graduated with Honours from Brock University’s esteemed Sport Management program. From 2002 until 2006 he led a team that was hired by Golf Canada to fulfill tournament operations at their PGA Tour and LPGA Tour Canadian Open’s. In 2006, Cameron moved into the business development side of the industry, overseeing corporate partnerships and hospitality with the 2007 Grey Cup in Toronto. After some brief time out of the industry Cameron joined the team at BC Place in 2011 as the stadium was undergoing an 18-month, $500m. renovation project. Cameron oversaw stadium revenue generation, managing relationships with its corporate partners, securing events and managing the facility relationship with its anchor tenants, the Whitecaps FC and BC Lions. In the process he has had the privilege of working with clients that include the MLS, CFL, NHL, Canadian Soccer Association, Rugby Canada, AEG and Live Nation.

Cameron recently returned to Southwestern Ontario with his wife, Alida, and daughter, Brinley. When he’s not at the office or spending time with family you can usually find Cameron out on the golf course, kicking up dirt on a running trail or relaxing on the patio with friends.

Head Coach and General Manager

Kissi returns to the Nighthawks after being named the club’s Head Coach and GM on July 8th, 2019. Kissi joins the Nighthawks from the Toronto Raptors G-League affiliate, the Raptors 905, where he is currently the Lead Assistant to Head Coach Jama Mahlalela. Kissi grew up playing basketball and attended McMaster University, where he went on to play in two national championship tournaments and winning the 2003 Liam Stevens Award, given to a player who best exemplifies a positive attitude, hard-work and determination. After graduating from McMaster University, Kissi spent the next 10 years as a police officer with the Toronto Police Service. During Kissi’s time with the Toronto Police Service, he continued to stay involved in the sport of basketball where he was an assistant coach for the Women’s Basketball team at Ryerson University. Kissi took over the head coaching duties for the Rams and in his first full season, 2010-2011, taking the team to a 10-12 record and to the OUA East Final Four. Kissi landed an Apprentice Coaching Mentorship with MLSE under Dwayne Casey, then Head Coach of the Toronto Raptors through the 2012-2013 season. After Kissi’s mentorship program finished Kissi joined the Brock University Men’s Basketball program as their new Head Coach. In two short years, Kissi transformed a 4-win team into a double-digit win team. In the 2017-18 season the Badgers finished 21-3 and earned a Wildcard berth into the U-Sports Final 8, finishing 5th. Kissi returned to the Raptors 905 in 2018 as an assistant coach under Jama Mahlalel, where he helped guide the club to a 29-21 regular season record, preparing players including Chris Boucher and Malcolm Miller for their roles with the Toronto Raptors on their run to the 2019 NBA Championship.

Lead Assistant Coach

Mike Rao joins the Nighthawks as the Lead Assistant Coach to Head Coach and GM Charles Kissi after a standout season as Head Coach of the Brock University women’s basketball team. From Welland Ontario, Rao began his career with Wellington Minor Basketball, which led to 38 years coaching the Notre Dame Sr. Boys basketball team. Rao joined Kissi’s Brock Badgers men’s basketball team staff as an assistant coach in 2016 until Kissi’s departure for the Raptors 905 in 2018, after which he was appointed head coach of the program. In just his second season at the helm of the team, his team won the OUA Championship and placed 2nd at the USPORTS National Championship in Ottawa. Rao was named OUA and USPORTS Coach of the Year for women’s basketball and OUA Coach of the Year.

Assistant Coach, Player Development

Previously a guard with Ryerson University, Arsalan Jamil has spent the past 6 seasons as part of the Toronto Raptors basketball operations staff in numerous roles, including executive assistant to President and GM Masai Ujiri and IT Event Coordinator. Jamil is currently serving as the Special Assistant Coach for the Raptors 905 under Head Coach Jama Mahlalela, where he works closely with Charles Kissi.

One of the most decorated players in McMaster history, Steve Maga was a four-time OUA West All-Star, three-time All-Canadian and was awarded the Ivor Wynne Award as McMaster Male Athlete of the Year an unprecedented three straight years (1999, 2000 and 2001). Over his four year career, McMaster qualified for the CIS championship every year, winning the silver medal in 1998. Twice named OUA West Player of the Year (1999, 2001), Maga also was a four time all-star at the national tournament. Maga capped off his career by being named the Mike Moser Award recipient as the outstanding player in Canada in 2001. Steve Maga presently teaches mathematics and physical education at Bishop Tonnos Catholic High School in Ancaster, Ontario. He coaches both the Junior Girls Basketball (2005 Champions) and the Senior Boys Basketball Teams. Coach Maga’s experience includes playing at virtually every level of basketball in Canada including the Men’s National Team program coupled with the following coaching experiences: Head Coach, Bishop Tonnos H.S. Assistant Coach, McMaster University Assistant Coach, JDP Central Region Head Coach, Cardinal Newman H.S. Clinician, Adidas Coaching Clinic Speaker on behalf of the CIS, Nike All-Canadian Camp.

Bob Urosevic joins the Nighthawks with a wealth of coaching experience at various levels, most recently as an Assistant Coach with the University of Waterloo men’s basketball team from 2015-2018.

Urosevic is a lifelong Kitchener-Waterloo resident and graduate from the University of Waterloo where he was a member of the men’s basketball team from 1980-1983. Urosevic has led the Viper U14 Elite, KW Vipers Elite boy’s and the KW Lightning girl’s programs over the past 20-plus years.

Wumi Agubiade first met Head Coach and GM Charles Kissi when she played club basketball for him at 15 years old. She joins the Nighthawks from her current position as a Junior Coach with the Raptors 905, as part of their Mentee Coaching program.

Agunbiade played four years at Duquesne University, followed by three years professionally overseas in Germany, Italy and Romania. Following her professional career, she completed two years as a graduate assistant coach on the University of Pittsburgh’s women’s basketball team.

Chris Rao joins the Nighthawks coaching staff as an Assistant Coach from Niagara College, where he is the current Head Coach of the women’s basketball program. While pursuing his degree in education at Cape Breton University, Rao was an Assistant Coach with the men’s program for 4 seasons from 2014-2017 and 2018-2019. Afterwards Rao joined Acadia University men’s basketball team where he was an assistant coach for the 2017/2018 season. While in Nova Scotia, Rao also spent time as both Assistant and Head Coach with Basketball Nova Scotia U14 and U17 boys, most notably leading the U17 team to a national championship in 2018.

Mike Girling returns as an Assistant Coach for the Nighthawks after joining the staff during their inaugural season in 2019 He is currently an Assistant Coach with the University of Waterloo men’s basketball team, and spent the 2019/2020 season as the Lead Assistant, Video Coordinator and Head of Basketball Administration with the KW Titans of the National Basketball League of Canada.

Kareem Thawer joins Kissi’s staff from his most recent position as graduate Assistant Coach with the Niagara University men’s basketball team from 2017-2019, where he was primarily responsible for video coordinator, basketball administration and player development. He also currently works as a teacher at Nelson Mandela Park School in Toronto.

Bio

Former Edmonton Stinger Akeem Ellis joins the Nighthawks, providing a veteran presence and front court depth to the roster. The American forward was a staple in Edmonton’s starting line-up on its way to the 2019 CEBL Championship Weekend. Ellis, from Brooklyn, NY, has played professionally in the NBA’s G-League, Britain, France and Canada. Last season Akeem averaged 8.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game with Edmonton. Since the conclusion of the 2019 CEBL season Ellis has been playing for the KW Titans in the NBL Canada, where he put up 17.7 points, 7.4 rebounds and 4 assists per game.

Ali was selected by the Guelph Nighthawks with the fifth selection in the second round of the 2020 CEBL – U SPORTS Draft as a designated U SPORTS Returning Player from Wilfrid Laurier University. Sow completed his third year of eligibility at Laurier in 2020, where he has been one of the country’s top offensive perimeter threats as the second leading scorer in the OUA in both 2018/19 and 2019/20. In 2019/20 he led the team with 23.7 PPG and 3.7 APG, guiding the Golden Hawks to the OUA Wilson Cup Semi-Finals for the second consecutive year. In 2018/19 Sow was named the prestigious President’s Award winner as the Athlete of the Year at Wilfrid Laurier, following a season in which he again led the Hawks to the OUA Semi-Finals and was named the university’s Athlete of the Week a staggering six times. On November 24, 2018 Sow scored a career high 44 points for Laurier against Nipissing. Sow is currently enrolled in Communications Studies. Hailing from Ottawa, Ontario, Ali was recruited to Wilfrid Laurier University out of Merivale High School.

Corey Johnson joins the Nighthawks after having his season cut short due to COVID-19. Johnson made an immediate impact off the bench with the Leicester Riders of the British Basketball League, averaging 12.4PPG over 9 games. The Ottawa, Ontario native played four years for Harvard University Crimson, playing in 105 games, averaging 24.4 mins per game and scoring 7.2PPG. During his first professional stint in 2019/20 with the Spanish LEB Silver Zornotza Saskibaloi Taldea, Johnson started in all 15 games and averaged 10.6PPG. Johnson previously competed in the U19 FIBA World Cup for team Canada in 2015, and the U18 Americas Championship in 2014.

A 7-year pro, Flenard Whitfield comes to the Nighthawks after playing most recently for the nearby Kitchener-Waterloo Titans of the NBLC. Having spent time playing in Iceland, Finland and now Canada Flenard looks to bring his pure scoring ability a few kilometres down HWY 7 to the Royal City. Averaging over 50% from the field for his career, opposing teams will have to respect Flenard everytime he has the ball as he can pull up from anywhere. Standing at 6’7” Whitfield has the opportunity to show the CEBL his versatility as he can play both forward spots as he can use his body against smaller forwards.

Jabari Craig returns to the Nighthawks after a brief stint with the team at the beginning of the 2019 season. The Scarborough, Ontario native transferred to East Carolina University in his junior year. Over the course of two years with the Pirates, Craig averaged 3PPG and 3.9RBS through 47 games. During the 2019/2020 CEBL off-season, Craig spent time with CSM Focsani (Romania) of the Romanian Divizia A league, and KB Rahoveci (Kosovo) of the Balkan BIBL league, where he averaged 6.1PPG, 6.2RBS and 1.1BLK over 21 games. Craig also spent the 2018/19 season with the Cape Breton Highlanders of the NLBC.

Jamal Reynolds makes his return to the Guelph Nighthawks after a strong 2019 showing. The 26-year-old guard was a solid contributor during the nine games he played for the Nighthawks. The Pickering product played high school basketball for Pine Ridge Secondary School where he was named MVP in his senior season. Reynolds played two seasons at the JUCO level for Mott Community College in Flint Township, MI before going to Western New York to play at Canisius College (NCAA Division I - MAAC) where he made an immediate impact. Reynolds played two seasons in the NBL-Canada for Cape Breton before joining the Nighthawks in 2019. He secured a contract in Spain for the 2019/2020 winter season and played for Circulo Gijon in the Spanish LEB Silver League.

Bio

Joel Friesen joins the Nighthawks after a successful campaign with BC Odessa of the Ukrainian Superleague. The overall number one draft pick of the inaugural CEBL season in 2019, Friesen was a veteran presence for the Fraser Valley Bandits, averaging 9.37PPG, 2.21RPG and 1.58APG over 19 games. The 29 year old native of Abbotsford, BC chose to stay in Canada for university, playing for the University of Alberta, where he led the Golden Bears to a USports Canada West Title, and 2nd and 3rd places finishes at the USports Men’s Final Eight. The versatile guard has a great deal of professional experience at home on Canadian soil, playing on various teams in the NBLC from 2015 up until the most recent season with the KW Titans. Friesen was also tapped to represent Canada on the Sr. Men’s National Team for the 2017 Americas World Cup Qualifier.

Bio

Jonathan Arledge joins the Nighthawks and the CEBL following a campaign in France with Cholet Basket of the Pro A Jeep Elite League. Arledge started in 23 of 25 games, averaging 4.4RBS and 8.2PPG. The Washington native spent three years with George Mason University before transferring to Old Dominion University to finish out his senior year in 2014/15 where he was a consistent starter for the Monarchs. Arledge has also played professionally in Latvia, Italy and Switzerland since graduating in 2015.

Kimbal Mackenzie returns to the Nighthawks after a tremendous showing during the inaugural 2019 season. The Oakville product is a true point guard with big game experience which was put on display last year. Mackenzie opted to attend high school in the talent rich hotbed of Washington, DC/Baltimore at John Carroll High School. At only 22 years old, Mackenzie joined the Nighthawks a little after the halfway point last season and immediately started in every game he played. Having graduated from Bucknell University (NCAA Division I - Patriot League) in Pennsylvania just a few months prior, Mackenzie made an immediate impression during his rookie CEBL campaign. Since the end of the inaugural CEBL season, Mackenzie has been playing in Spain for C.B. Valladolid in the Spanish LEB Gold League.

• Ranked 18th all-time at Bucknell in points scored (1,330), 4th all-time in 3PT FGs made (211) and 2nd in career FT% (.854) • In his sophomore season at Bucknell was voted one of the most improved players in the Patriot League, and was selected to the Third-Team all Patriot League. Averaged 11.9 ppg, 2.4 apg, and 1.1 spg. Shot an efficient 46.4 FG% and 41.0% from 3PT. The Guelph Nighthawks selected Marcus Anderson with the third overall selection in the 2020 CEBL – U SPORTS Draft, following a five-year career at Carleton University. Anderson is known as one of the top defenders in the country, leading the Ravens as the top defensive team in the OUA during each of his five years at Carleton. The lock-down defender has twice been named the U SPORTS and OUA Defensive Player of the Year in 2017/18 and 2018/19. Anderson’s Carleton Ravens were crowned U SPORTS National Champion in four of his five years, including the most recent 2019/20 season. Anderson was recruited to Carleton out of St. Edmund Campion Secondary School in Brampton where he had built a reputation as a winner and relentless defender. His father, Everton Anderson, is a former 100 and 200-metre sprinter that competed for Canada internationally.

Bio

Michale Kyser rejoins the Nighthawks after being part of the inaugural roster last summer. Kyser became a fan favorite in his short stint with the Nighthawks in 2019, with a great motor and attitude on the court. The Texan product was a standout player at Louisiana Tech (NCAA Division I - Conference USA) where he was a three year starter and accumulated numerous awards, including 2-time All-Defensive Player in the C-USA in his junior and senior seasons. In his senior year, he led the Bulldogs to the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) after narrowly missing out on a March Madness at-large bid. At 28, Kyser has a strong resume of professional experience, spending time in the NBA Summer League with both the Toronto Raptors and New Orleans Pelicans. Kyser took advantage of the NBA time to three G-League stops, most recently, this winter with the Lakeland Magic (Orlando Magic) in Florida. Kyser spent the 2017/18 seasons playing in Cyprus and Greece.

Bio

Myles Charvis returns to the Guelph Nighthawks for a second season of basketball in the Royal City. Charvis hails from Mississauga which is also where he played high school basketball. He is a polished true point guard and leader who honed his craft playing on some of the best USports teams before joining the Nighthawks. Charvis played at Waterloo for two years before transferring to OUA powerhouse Ryerson in downtown Toronto. He left a great mark on the Ryerson program when he came in and was an immediate impact starter for the Rams. Charvis joined the Nighthawks as one of their U Sports players last year part way through the season and again, made an immediate impact. This winter, Charvis signed a contract to play in the NBL-Canada with the Kitchener-Waterloo Titans. He appeared in two games before being ruled out for the rest of the season due to injury.

Bio

Famutimi rejoins the Guelph Nighthawks after a stellar inaugural campaign last summer. He was named team MVP for the 2019 season and provided tremendous leadership to his teammates both on and off the court. Famutimi has had a long professional career with stops in the USA, Turkey, Ukraine, France and Germany among others. Famutimi had a standout career in high school; first at Chaminade College School in Toronto and then at Flint Northwestern in Flint, MI. While in high school, he was ranked as the 7th overall recruit by ESPN and also received a prestigious invitation to play in the 2003 McDonald’s All-American Game. Unfortunately, due to injury, Famutimi would not end up playing in the game. Famutimi committed to the University of Arkansas where he played for two years before declaring for the NBA Draft. He also earned a stint with the Canadian Senior Men’s National Team for four years where he played on the team that finished fourth in the 2009 FIBA Americas Championship. Most recently, Famutimi spent the CEBL off-season with the KW Titans of the NBL Canada.

A young up and coming 6’10’’ forward Tidjan Keita joins the Nighthawks after various stints in the NBA’s G-League, Germany and his home country of France. In the summer of 2017-18 Keita was invited to play for the Toronto Raptors summer league team where he played in 2 games, averaging 4 min a game. Although it was short-lived Keita earned a spot with the Northern Arizona Suns, the Phoenix Suns G-League team. Coming off his best scoring season for BBC Coburg in Germany, Keita has the length and raw ability to disrupt opposing teams defences in the CEBL. This season will prove as a key stepping stone in Keita’s young and promising career.

Tre’darius McCallum joins the Guelph Nighthawks for his first season of professional basketball north of the border. The DePaul product comes to the Nighthawks from the G-League ranks where he has spent his first two professional seasons. McCallum played two years of JUCO basketball at Indian Hills Community College in Iowa before joining the DePaul Blue Demons (Division I - Big East) in Chicago. He made the easy transition staying in Chicago after school playing for the Chicago Bulls G-League affiliate; the Windy City Bulls.

Tyrell Corbin brings his talents back to the Royal City for a second season of Nighthawks basketball. The South Carolina native was a late addition to the roster last year but had an immediate impact coming off of the bench. Corbin comes from a basketball family; his father Tyrone Corbin had a 16-year NBA career and is now an assistant coach of the Orlando Magic. While his father was coaching with the Utah Jazz, Corbin grew up and played his high school ball in the Salt Lake City area where he was named Utah’s Mr. Basketball in 2011. He would go on to play for UC Davis (NCAA Division I - Big West Conference), Salt Lake CC and Cal St. Bakersfield (NCAA Division I - Big West Conference). The 27-year-old has a wealth of professional experience prior to his time in Guelph. Corbin had two stints with the Northern Arizona Suns (Phoenix Suns - NBA G League) and one with the Stockton Kings (Sacramento Kings - NBA G League).

Bio

Former UNLV standout Tyrell Green joins the Nighthawks, giving the team another weapon from behind the arc. The 6’7” Canadian guard spent parts of this past season in Finland’s Korisliiga with Ura Basket and with the London Lightning of the NBL Canada. Between the two league’s Tyrell averaged 12.0 points per game while shooting 40% from 3-point range. Green was also called to the senior men’s national team in 2020 to represent Canada in the Americup Qualifiers. He also made appearances in the 2012 U17 FIBA World Cup and the 2011 U16 Americas Championship.

Bio

Tyrrel Tate joins the Guelph Nighthawks for his first season this summer. The Calgary, Alberta native played high school basketball at Triangle powerhouse Millbrook High School. He played college basketball at Fayetteville State University (Division II - CIAA) where he was a three year starter, graduating in 2014. Tate has a great deal of experience at the professional level with stints in the G-League for the Texas Legends, Capital City Go-Go, Idaho Stampede and Canton Charge. Tate has held contracts in the NBL-Canada as well, playing for Moncton, Windsor and Sudury. Last summer, Tate played in the CEBL last year where he started 17 games for Fraser Valley. He most recently played in Mexico for Rayos de Hermosillo in the CIBACOPA.

MEDIAPRO also manages the global media rights to Spain’s LaLiga Santander and in 2018 was awarded a wide package of rights for the four seasons from 2020-21 to France’s Ligue 1 and Ligue 2. The MEDIAPRO Group produces more than 15 TV channels worldwide, including several specialty sports channels.With 58 offices on four continents, MEDIAPRO is also one of the most important creators of content in the world, with projects for HBO, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Turner, DirecTV, Movistar, FOX, Viacom and Televisa.

MEDIAPRO Canada is also a full-service company offering mobiles, air-packs, crewing, studios, and a complete rentals department from its Toronto, Canada headquarters. The Group entered the Canadian broadcast services market in April of 2019 as part of its global expansion drive.
