Evaluation Task 1 1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products ?

I am using the video ‘Love the way you lie – Eminem Ft Rihanna’ in comparison to my own video.

1. A shot that shows a link between lyrics and/or music and visuals.

In this clip from the video ‘Love the way you lie’ Rihanna ft Eminem, Rihanna is in front of a wall of flames that some may see as a powerful image. One of her lyrics is ‘Just gunna stand there and watch you burn’ which relates to the back ground shots, and this shows the link between the lyrics and the music video. The shot following this there it is of a woman with a flame in her hand ‘burning’ like the lyric suggests.

In this shot taken from our video the actor says the lyric ‘say your talking to me though’ whilst he says this he is pointing at himself. This shows a link between him and the lyrics of the song, I thought that the actor did this really well in this clip as it works well too.

2. A shot that typifies the way a record company would want their artist to be represented.

This screen shot is a shot of Eminem a well known artist that is featured in this music video. It is good that Eminem is in the video because he would attract a lot of viewers to this particular video just because of how well known he is. In this shot he is represented as a single artist, on his own just like the majority of his music. In this shot taken from Heartless,

it shows the artist alone whilst he is singing. This is good because he is alone in the song because his partner has just left him, this would be a good picture of how the record company would want him too, because he is a single artist and he works alone, a bit like Eminem does in the video above.

3. A shot that illustrates how your video uses music genre.

In this shot of the video it shows represents the genre of the music video. The music video of this genre would be Hip-Hop and Rap. Eminem is rapping in one of his 3 verses in this song, alone. This is how he likes himself and his genre to be illustrated. This is because most of rappers are single artists.

This shot on the right shows the genre of the video really well. The genre is Hip-Hop and rap and the artist is a single artist, so a shot of the artist alone is good because it typifies the genre. As I said above most of the rappers in the 21st century are single artists.

4. A shot that shows an intertextual reference.

Here in this shot we see the shadows of the actors that are used in this shot. I like how this is done in the video because the actors are going though an emotional time, and hiding their faces protects them and makes them feel more secure. The use of the sunlight is also used to good effect to create the shadow effect to.

This particular shot shows intertextual reference. This is because the lyrics says ‘That you are leaving me’ and when this bit is sung, our actor is walking out and implying that he is leaving her. This has also worked well and mixed in together with the song and the music video.

5. A shot that demonstrates your use of camera.

In this shot, it shows both the main artists together with a burning building in the background. This is a good camera position for the shot because it captures both the artist and the burning building in the back ground, in which the music video is based on.

This shot shows the use of camera really well, this is because it captures not only the actor but the lights of the cars as they drive past, and the lighting on the pub too. This works really well with the actor on the bridge. I think that the camera is in the right position in this shot.

6. A shot that demonstrates your use of lighting

This shot uses the use of the natural sun light for the shot, although some camera lighting would have been used in some occasions, but to the audience the only light being used will be that of the sun. this is clever and is used quite a lot in this music video. Earlier on in the video light coming from a burning house was used, and gave a good outline of Rihanna, and also with the actors in the room.

This shot uses the lighting coming form the building in the background really well. It creates a silhouette of the character and gives the effect that we were after in this particular shot. This worked well because in the official video they use this effect, but instead of it being with a human it is with a cartoon character.

7. A shot that demonstrates your use of Mise-en-scene.

Although I have used a similar screen grab earlier, I feel that this shot gives a good perception of the Mise-en-scene of the video, it is set inside of the house, and thought out the video the house will eventually burn down, just like the actors relationships, it completely ends and is burnt to ashes, and cant be mended.

For this shot it shows our Mise-en-scene which is the background shot of the town of Henley-On-Thames. This is a good background shot because it shows good lighting and also it shows areas in which we did the majority of our filming. The lighting is red which can be related to the world hear, meaning love, so this links our music video to the song and the Mise-en-scene.

8/9. Two shots which you feel demonstrate something which shows you have watched other music videos.

In this shot from the music video ‘No Love’ by Lil Wayne and Eminem it shows Lil Wayne alone, just like in the music video ‘Love the way you lie’ and our own music video, which is Heartless by Kanye West. As we said earlier this shot typifies what mainstream hip-hop and rap is about, being alone and independent.

This is the same sort of camera shot taken from our own music video, as you can see both the shots are similar as we used the one above and tried to put it into our own music video. We think that it gives a good effect to the music video as you are only focusing on the artist.

8/9. Two shots which you feel demonstrate something which shows you have watched other music videos.

This shot is taken from the video ‘Flashing Lights’ by Kanye West who is the same artist that sung our song, this shot is taken of a woman walking in the darkness so it shows what seems to only be a portrait of her body being shown, we used this in our video because we thought that this was extremely effective.

This is our version of the shot, there is abit more light in ours than that of the one above, however the shot still works well and we are pleased with this. We did use the video ‘Flashing Lights’ for Inspiration for this shot, as we think that it looks class and sharp, and that of the genre of hip hop and rap.
