In what ways does your media product use, develop or

challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (how does it fit / not fit the genre)

Page 2: Media evaluation conventions

One of the main conventions of the pop genre is that they send out a positive message. This is most commonly done through the lyrics of the video.

This is shown by the way that the bullied little girl comes out on top wit the bullies wanting to be her friend.

The silly string scene shows the girl coming out on top.

Positive Message...The message the lyrics is that bullying gets you nowhere, we have shown this message in our video.

We have developed this convention by showing the positive message in our video as well as the lyrics.

By Liv’s strong pose we show that she is strong and hasn’t been bothered by the bullying.

Good messages are in the videos because the target audience of many pop songs are teenage or young adults, who are seen to be influential.

Positive Message...

We emphasised how the girl comes out on top by using a low angle shot to make her look powerful and bigger than the bullies.

Bright Colours....A typical convention of pop music videos is that they are bright and colourful. Bright colours give music videos an energetic upbeat atmosphere, which makes them more enjoyable to watch.

We had the bullies all dressed in bright pink, this gives them a bright child innocent look and also makes them seem united.

We wanted people to enjoy watching our video so we used this convention. The song is also an upbeat positive song so making the video colourful suits the song.

To brighten up the classroom and make it look more like a room for younger children, we cleared the room and set it up with big chunky coloured chairs.

This layout also gave it a more traditional typical classroom look and feel Bright Colours....

We brightened up this scene by using different coloured balloons. We chose to use the red, yellow, blue and green balloons as they stand out the most in contrast with the white background and black of my costume.

Setting...A common setting of a pop music video is a school. This is because the target audience of pop videos are teenagers and school is somewhere that all teenagers have experienced and so can therefore relate to the video.

We thought that this created a connection for the audience, we wanted to create this connection for our audience and so used this convention by using our school as the setting for our video.

A school is seen to be a happy, safe and educational place. This is appropriate to the pop genre as it is seen to be happy and send out a good message. Jessie J Whos Laughing Now

Shot Types...Long shot

Pop music videos have wide variety of shot types, they have a mix throughout them usually cutting from one to another.

We thought that this was something that makes a music video interesting to watch as it is constantly changing.

This is a convention that we used in our video.

Long shot from behindShot Types...

Before filming we did research on other videos to see what shot types they used.We made storyboards so that we could plan and ensure that we have used a variation of shots.

Shot Types...Establishing shot

An establishing shot is used to set the scene for the narrative from the start of the video. This shot is more commonly used in films, which makes the narrative seem more like a story.

Britney Spears Hit Me Baby One More Time

In our research this is a shot that we came across in the Britney Spears video for Hit Me Baby One More Time. It stood out to us because the location of it looks like our school hall. The shot is really creative and original and because of our resources we could recreate it effectively.

Mix of Narrative and Performance...A common feature of pop genre videos is that they have a mix of narrative and performance throughout them.

From the questionnaire that I did on a focus group I found out that they preferred the video to have a story line but also for the focus to be on performance.

We felt that having a mix of narrative and performance in our video will make it more interesting to watch as you want to find out what happens at the end of the narrative.

Also that we can make it look more professional with the resources that we have to have narrative as well rather than just performance
