Representatives from over 15 MedCruisemember ports attended the EuropeanCruise Council Ports Summit and

Annual Meeting 2011, in Brussels on June14th and 15th.

The ECC’s first Ports Summit broughttogether representatives of ECC’s membersand of European ports to discuss some of thekey challenges arising in the relationsbetween ports and operators, with a view toimprove efficiency of operations.

Roberto Ferrarini (Costa Crociere), NeilPalomba (MSC Cruises), Bert Swets (DisneyCruises), David Pickett (Carnival UK), TineNathalie Oelmann (TUI Cruises), Karl-Ludwig Zerbin of AIDA Cruises, Capt. LuigiRazeto (Prestige Cruise Holdings), Capt.Luigi Pastena (MSC Cruises), Rich Pruitt(RCCL), Francisco Reddel of (RCCL) andAdam Sharp (RCCL).

The Berthing Allocation Systems sessionaddressed the issue of booking systems forberth allocation for cruise ships in ports. Thediscussion was based on MedCruise’s draftproposal which includes ports issuing

deadlines for cruise line bookings around 14months before the requested time of call andthat ports should give confirmation ofrequest and berth allocation.

Salvadò, representing the Port ofBarcelona, spoke about the port’s berthallocation system which has been operationalfor the last four years, and has generatedpositive results. Requests are collected 14months in advance and are assigned bygiving first priority to turnover ships, thenhome port ship and finally to ships in transit.

However, Ms Salvadò mentioned that thissystem does not work as well in other ports,which suffer more from sudden cancellationor double bookings from cruise operators.

There was a lively debate on the questionof cancellation and double bookings. Thecruise lines spoke strongly against theintroduction of cancellation fees or penalties.

In conclusion, the ports and cruise linesrepresentatives agreed that a commonberthing allocation system would bebeneficial to both sides. In order to establishan efficient system, ports and cruise linesshould explore the potential of recentinitiatives, such as the experience of the Portof Barcelona.

‘The debate was a good starting point foron-going discussions which need to continuebetween all sides to find a common solution,’said Spadoni.

MedCruise president GiovanniSpadoni returned to Greece a fewweeks after the MedCruise GA, held

in Piraeus, this time speaking at the firstPosidonia Sea Tourism Forum, in Athens.

European Cruise Council vice chairmanPierfrancesco Vago stressed the need forurgent discussions between the authoritiesand cruise lines on issues such ashomeporting operations, port fees andadvanced berthing allocations, in order thatcruise tourism can play its part in improving

Greece's economic woes.'Greece has a great cultural heritage and is

on everyone's list of must-see destinations,'said the MSC Cruises ceo. With 4.5m cruisevisitors last year it is the third most visitedcruise destination in Europe and accounts for20% of the market, he added.

However Vago strongly urged the Greekgovernment to review its cabotage ruleswhich have been amended but not abolished:'The cruise lines will bring more ships if theoperating environment and regulatory

framework are in line with practiceselsewhere.'

With Piraeus port's privatisation plansrecently announced, John Tercek, vpcommercial and new business development atRoyal Caribbean highlighted various modelsand explained the pros and cons of private-public partnerships. Spadoni also spokeabout the pros and cons of such partnershipsadding, ‘the intervention of the private sectorin the ownership and operation of terminalsincreases their efficiency levels.’

In a new move, MedCruise will berepresented on the exhibition floor atSeatrade Europe Cruise and Rivercruise

Convention in Hamburg on September 27-29th, 2011. This is the first time MedCruisehas had a stand at the Hamburg event, animportant place for networking with cruiseline representatives and hearing key issuesdebated at the high-level conference.

MedCruise president Giovanni Spadoniwill also be a providing a view from the

Mediterranean as a speaker in the CruisePort Development session taking place onSeptember 29th. Portimao

Portimao, previously part of a multi-grouped Portuguese Ports membershipis now a stand alone member of

MedCruise.Portimao lies on the route to the

Mediterranean Sea, to the North Atlanticislands and of cruise ships plying their wayacross the Atlantic. One nights sailingdistance south of Lisbon, due to new trafficlanes now operational, ships calling Port ofPortimao can save 42 nautical miles on southbound passages bringing the journey tounder 100 nautical miles. This results in fuelsavings and longer stays in the port.

Ships up to 210mtr LOA can be

accommodated at Portimao’s cruise facility,located in the city centre, near excellentbeaches, hotels, shopping, dining andentertainment. It is the gateway to theAlgarve, the world famous southernmostregion of Portugal.

In 2011, 60 cruise ships are expected tobring 45,000 passengers up from 34,000 on 52calls last year. Ships with dimensionsexceeding those stated above may beaccepted subject to prior approval by thePort Authority’s pilotage department.

Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki Port Authority will behosting a celebration in 2012 to markthe 100-year anniversary of the

liberation of the city and its integration inthe Greek State. Accordingly visitors to theGreek port city will be able to attend anumber of festivals, exhibitions, concerts andother events to mark this momentousoccasion. Additionally, there are excursionsto the city’s archaeological sites, Byzantinemonuments, museums, mount Olympus andAthos and numerous beaches.

The port anticipates receiving 18,000passengers from a total of 21 vessel calls – up

marginally from 16,050 passengers resultingfrom 20 vessel calls in 2010. However, asalient point is that 30% of cruise traffic toThessaloniki port is in the form ofnewcomers, which the port hopes will turn into repeat business.

Thessaloniki port intends to improve cruisefacilities in the next few years, withinvestment plans to deepen the cruise berthsfrom their current 8mtr depth to 10mtr. Theport authority plans to begin dredgingoperations in mid 2012. There are also plansto modernise the passenger terminalbuilding, with work scheduled to begin in2012.

Souda, located at the northwest side ofCrete and the closest port of call to theGreek town of Chania, is expecting an

increase in traffic this year up from the 2010figures of 11,509 passengers from 21 cruisecalls. The port anticipates ending the year withapproximately 160,000 cruise passengers froma total of 73 vessel calls – a figure it is alreadyapproaching, having received 39 cruise ships asof August 19th.

To meet this increasing demand, the port hasrevealed plans to extended its existing docks toaccommodate larger cruise vessels as well as

construct a passenger terminal. The extensionwork is slated for completion by 2015.

Visitors to Chania (7km away from Souda)can avail themselves of a number of excursionsas well as a wide variety of Cretan cuisine. Thetown of Chania was built upon the ruins ofMinoan Kydonia and is surrounded by aByzantine wall, Venetian wall and the sea; andthere are a number of tours for cruisepassengers. Visitors can attend a number ofcultural events taking place in the Municipalityof Chania, from July until the end ofSeptember called ‘Cultural Summer, Chania’.

Nearby are a number of beaches of EUblue flag quality and cultural spots such asthe archaeological museum, the historicmuseum, the Naval museum and the museumof school life. There are also excursionsavailable to archaeological sites such asAptera (a short distance away from thePalaikastro and Itzedin fortresses), a numberof monastaries that house historical andreligious heirlooms, and also theArkoudiotissa cave with a stalactite in ashape of a bear.

Venice Terminal Passeggeri inauguratedits Isonzo II cruise terminal in July andanticipated further increases in vessel

calls and passenger throughput in the yearahead.

According to VTP president SandroTrevisanato: ‘The expansion of theinfrastructure at the Stazione Marittima willincrease our capacity and allow us to offer abetter welcome to the 1.8m passengersexpected for this year, an increase of 11.7%on 2010.’

The new two-storey building includes arestaurant, duty-free store, VIP areas and a

viewing terrace, and comes complete with airconditioning and under-floor heating. It was18 months in the construction and cost €12m.

Trevisanato said the steady increase inbusiness at the terminal provided vindicationof its expansion policy, adding that ‘Venicehas become a cruise hub of the first order,and the source of itineraries that touch uponthe most fascinating area of theMediterranean, linking Italy, Croatia, Greeceand Turkey.’

He attributed this success to the carefulcultivation of the major cruise lines andVTP’s ability to home in on new cruise

trends, such as winter cruising, which saw60,000 passengers pass through the facilitybetween November and March, and theincreasingly popular short cruises.

Trevisanato added that cruising also had amajor beneficial impact on the local economy,with recent studies finding that each cruisetourist spends €180 in the area, for a total ofalmost €300m per year.

VTP has invested more than €32m in thefacility thus far and plans to invest €30mmore over the next three years, part of thatto convert warehouses into new terminalbuildings and access new berth line.

Trieste in the spotlight as Costa Favolosa is named

With Trieste’s grand seafront PiazzaUnita d’Italia as the setting, CostaFavolosa was named in a

midnight spectacle of Italian pride, beautyand history. The sea, sky and statelybuildings were incorporated into a showcalled ‘Tribute to Beauty’ that featuredpiano, ballet, video projections and anaerial artist tethered to a cluster of heliumballoons.

Part of the official celebrations for the150th anniversary of Italian unification,

the early July black-tie festivities werestirring and filled with symbolism, fromBotticelli’s Venus to the Italian flag.

Costa Crociere chairman and ceo PierLuigi Foschi put aside his prepared speechand spoke ‘from the heart’ as he expressedthe pride of contributing to ‘our bellissimacountry’ with this ‘Made in Italy’ ship.

Fincantieri ceo Giuseppe Bono told theaudience of nearly 2,000 people in thepiazza that his company aims to build allthe ships for Costa and Carnival, adding

‘We’re not going to let any get away.’Meanwhile, Costa Favolosa had eased

out from its berth and, ablaze with lights,loomed beyond the piazza.

Foschi, Bono, Carnival Corp. & plc’sMicky Arison and Howard Frank, Costapresident Gianni Onorato, Fincantieri’sCorrado Antonini and Favolosa Capt.Ignazio Giardina joined the godmother,Italian film star Margareth Madè, on thestage as she named the ship.

The Trieste setting had personal meaningfor the interior architect Joe Farcus, whoseHungarian grandfather emigrated from thecity to America on an ocean liner in theearly 20th century.

Constantza says thank you

Black Sea Port of Constantza'spassenger terminal welcomed twovisiting ships on July 14. First to

arrive was Regent's Seven Seas Mariner fromwhich 690 passengers departed on 14 tourbuses to discover the city of Constantza andits surroundings, informs Teodor Patrichi, theport's passenger terminal representative.

At 7.45 am, Costa Mediterranea, arrived atthe Romanian port from Istanbul whereIntercruises - Shoreside & Port Servicesorganised 25 guided tour buses and sixshuttle buses to a wide variety of touristdestinations including a visit of Romania’scapital, Bucharest, moving on to the ancientcitadel of Histria and the Danube Delta andending with the museums, resorts and

churches of Constantza.During Mediterranea's stay, Constantza

Maritime Ports Administration's commercialand infrastructure manager, Vasile Blanaru,presented the ship's master an albumfeaturing places of interest in Romania. Thegift was a token from the local community tomark Costa Cruises' as regular visitors to theport city. In 2011, Costa will call six timesand another six visits are planned for 2012.

Two days later Seabourn Quest arrivedand passengers were greeted by a young manand lady dressed in traditional costume andoffering samples of local food.

Naples - Capitalof Culture 2013

Naples has been designated ‘WorldCapital of Culture’ for 2013. Of the1.2m cruisers visiting the Italian port

city, many take the opportunity to visitPompeii, just half an hour away. Yet thebustling city of Naples has much to offerpassengers.

The National Archaeological Museum ofNaples has one of the world's best collectionsof Greek and Roman antiquities, includingmosaics, sculptures, gems, glass and silver.Many of the objects come from excavationsat Pompeii and other nearby archaeologicalsites.

San Francesco di Paola, in Piazza delPlebiscito, is a huge domed church. PalazzoReale, the Royal Palace, is across the square(closed Wednesdays). Inside you can visit therestored rooms and royal apartments and theroof garden offers good views of the bay.

Spaccanapoli, or Via San Biagio, is themain street that divides Naples and is theheart of the historic centre with manyinteresting churches, shops, and otherbuildings. its mainly a pedestrian zone so it’sa good place to wander around.

Santa Chiara Church is part of a largecomplex that includes a monastery withbeautiful cloisters decorated with tiles andfrescoes and an archaeological museum. TheDuomo is a 13th century Gothic cathedraldedicated to Naple's patron saint, SanGennaro. On one side of the is the 4thcentury Basilica Santa Restituta (the oldestchurch in Naples).

In the first half of 2011, Barcelona PortAuthority announced cruise passengers justsqueezed over the million mark, to

1,002,425, a gain of 11% and the first time theSpanish port has recorded a million within thefirst half year.

As further evidence that bigger ships meansmore bodies, the vessel count was 355 calls,only 5 more, or 1.4% than a year ago, helped inthe main that Liberty of the Seas, Norwegian

Epic and Carnival Magic are all based inBarcelona this summer ensuring multi-thousand passenger flows.

In June, Seabourn Quest was named by TonyAward-winning actress Blythe Danner beforethe ship cast off on its maiden voyage.

Maiden voyage passengers participated inthe festivities. A full orchestra was arrayedaround the swimming pool, and a projectionscreen above the deck showed the Champagne

bottle breaking on the bow.Adjacent to the screen, crew

members who had served in the start-up teams of all three new Seabournship launches instantaneously brokeconfetti-filled Champagne bottles in asynchronized wave pattern and as thebottle crashed.

Barcelona tips a million

The Greek port of Heraklion, Crete, isexpecting 300 cruise calls this year andaround 350,000 passengers at the

Venetian Harbour which offers numerousberths for accommodating ships of any sizeand a 3,500sq mtr passenger terminal whichhas an information booth with multi-lingualstaff, free WiFi internet access for all portvisitors, directional signs to the city centreand free city maps.

In addition to transit visits, Heraklion PortAuthority is aiming for home port traffic tiedto special fly-cruise packages with one week

at sea calling at, say, five Greek ports and theTurkish port of Kusadasi, followed by oneweek onshore with visits centred aroundmonastaries, spas and places of historicinterest.

The ancient city of Knossos and thefamous Minoan Palace is 20 minutes drivefrom Heraklion whilst the city itself boastsmany museums including an archeologicaland natural history museum.

MSC Cruises announced in mid-June a return to regular calls atTunisian port of La Goulette.

Starting on July 5, MSC Fantasia and MSCLirica visited followed by MSC Splendidaand MSC Sinfonia the day after.

During a press conference held at the LaGoulette Village Harbor, Neil Palomba, MSCCorporate Operating Officer, said thatreturning security in the recent period andthe will of customers and the company tovisit Tunisia have encouraged MSC to resume

its cruises to the port.Passengers arriving at La Goulette have

Bari expands cruise berth;welcomes Royal Caribbean

Port of Bari is expanding its cruisefacilities with the construction of a newquay at Darsena di Ponente in order to

accommodate two 350mtr long ships at thesame time. Work will start at the beginning ofthe new year, construction of the new berthshould be operational by the end of 2013.

Two million passengers pass through Portof Bari every year, 600,000 of them arecruisers. This year traffic numbers are up asRoyal Caribbean ships will make 24 callsbringing 87,000 passengers to the southernItalian port.

Of those calls, 22 between May andOctober 18 are coming from Royal Caribbean

International’s 138,000 gt Voyager of theSeas, with capacity for 3,114 passengers,while the final call will come from CelebrityCruises’ new 122,400gt flagship CelebritySilhouette, with capacity for 2,886passengers.

The company made just one call in Barilast year.

Costa Crociere has added another shipwhilst MSC Cruises will call in winter and asa result about 150,000 more passengers willvisit Bari this year, compared to 2010.

MSC returns toTunisia


Voyages to Antiquity’s 2012deployment includes six newitineraries and an expansion into the

Western Mediterranean. MitchellSchlesinger, vp marketing and sales, saidthe company will continue visiting its mostpopular destinations—Greece, Turkey,Croatia, the Black Sea region and Italy—while adding itineraries featuring Franceand Spain.

For example, sailings between Venice

and Cannes on May 25 and June 8 visit fivecountries over 16 days with stops in Italy,Croatia, Montenegro, Greece and France.Aegean Odyssey skirts the French Rivieraand calls at Marseille for excursions toArles and Avignon.

And the August 2 voyage round-tripfrom Civitavecchia has the French Rivieraand visits Cannes and Marseille along withCorsica. In Spain, Aegean Odyssey calls atBarcelona.

Costa Crociere signed a newbuild orderwith Fincantieri for a 132,500gt shipwith 4,928 maximum passenger

capacity. The vessel will be built at Margherashipyard and is scheduled to be delivered inOctober 2014. It will be the largest Italiancruise ship and the tenth ordered fromFincantieri by Costa in 10 years.

The newbuild is an evolution of theConcordia class, developed by integratingand improving the main features of the latestCosta ships.

At the end of July the technical launchtook place at Marghera (Venice) of CostaFascinosa, due to enter service in May 2012.

Fresh itineraries and 50 new ports arehighlighted in Seabourn’s 2012 andfirst quarter 2013 sailings. New

itineraries include Seabourn Spirit’s 10-day round-trips from Venice to the Adriaticand Dalmatian coasts and SeabournLegend’s two different 10-day itinerariesbetween Civitavecchia and Monte Carlothat explore the French and Italianrivieras.

New Mediterranean ports includeMedCruise members Porto Torres onSardinia and Chania in the Greek Isles,while Sinop is a new port in Turkey.Seabourn will also add Larnaca on Cyprus.

Numerous itineraries can be combinedwithout repeating ports, such as many ofthe 2012 seven-day Eastern Mediterraneanvoyages aboard Seabourn Odyssey andSeabourn Quest.

MED by MSC

In 2009, MSC Cruises developed asignature fragrance, MED by MSC, todiffuse in public rooms, fabrics and soap

dispensers. Piloted on MSC Splendida, the‘Aroma Diffusion’ project has now gone toall ships apart from MSC Melody.

MSC described MED by MSC as ‘freshand fruity, with warm notes of fig, almondand vetyver.’ The name reflects thecompany’s relationship with theMediterranean and is intended to evokeregional sensory delights such as thelavender fields of Provence.

New order will be an evo of Concordia class


Since July, 2011 Maria de Larratea hasbeen undertaking duties as DeputySecretary General of MedCruise.

Maria, who was born in Barcelona, hasexperience working internationally and isfluent in five languages: Spanish, English,Catalan, French and Italian and has juststarted learning Portuguese. Maria is basedin MedCruise office in Barcelona

French port of Sete in Languedoc-Roussillon is the venue for theMedCruise 39th General Assembly,

taking place between October 12th-15th,2011.

Participants are invited to check in atthe Crowne Plaza Hotel, Montpellierduring the afternoon of October 12th.

A Welcome Cocktail, will take place atFabre Museum in Montpellier that night.

During the next day invited cruise lineexecutives and media will visit the port ofSète and have a guided tour of the city andits surroundings, whilst the GA takesplace. In the afternoon the cruiseexecutives will join ports for a roundtablefollowed by a gala dinner at ValmagneAbbey.

Valmagne Abbey is a beautiful Cistercianabbey that was transformed into a winecellar after the French Revolution. Itsmagnificent Gothic church has been called

the 'Cathedral of the Vineyards'.In the 12th and 13th centuries, the

Cistercian Abbey of Valmagne was amongthe richest abbeys in the south of France.

Today, wine barrels still occupy theambulatory of the Gothic church. There isan atmospheric wine tasting room — ahigh-vaulted room with an oversizedchateau-like fireplace. The reconstructedmedieval gardens bloom with honeysuckle,white roses, and medicinal plants.

On Friday October 14th, cruise lineguests will participate in a conferencefollowed by B2B meetings. In the lateafternoon there will be a guided tour ofMontpellier city centre followed by afarewell dinner in Port of Sète.

On Saturday morning there will be aguided tour around cultural and historicLanguedoc-Roussillon. Members going tothe GA will find out more about Sete andits surroundings, during their stay.
