HEALTHHEALTHcharcoal using newspaper as a fuel.

• If you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire.

• Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources.

• There are also electric charcoal starters, which do not use fire. Be sure to use an extension cord for outdoor use.

• When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container.

• Apply a light soap and water solution to the hose using a brush or spray bottle.

• Turn the propane tank on. If there is a gas leak, the propane will release bubbles around the hose (big enough to see).

• If there are no bubbles, your grill is safe to use.

• If there are bubbles, turn off the tank and check connections, then have your grill serviced by a professional before using it again.

• If the leak doesn’t stop, call the fire department immediately.

When the grill is on:

• As you are cooking, if you smell gas, turn off the gas tank and burners.

• If the leak stops immediately, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again.

• If the smell continues, move away from the grill and call the fire department immediately. Do not move the grill.

Charcoal grills

• There are several ways to get the charcoal ready to use. Charcoal chimney starters allow you to start the

Fire in the grill, under hot dogs and burgers, is a welcome sight at the family cookout. But fire anywhere else can make your summer kick-off barbecue memorable for all the wrong reasons. To keep you and your family safe while grilling, follow these general guidelines:

General Grilling Tips

• Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.

• The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.

• Keep children and pets away from the grill area.

• Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.

• Never leave your grill unattended.

Propane Grills

Before you use your grill:

• Check the major connection points between the gas (propane) tank hose and the regulator and cylinder, and where the hose connects to the burners. Tighten if loose.

• Check the gas (propane) tank hose for the potential (gas) leaks. To do that:

Celebrating I/S Week

The Medical West Information Systems department consists of three areas of expertise – Operations and Help Desk, Network Services, and Applications. The department consists of 14 employees and is located on the ground floor of the hospital.

The Operations area handles day-to-day activities that assist with our systems, monitor backups and media storage. The help desk answers phones during business hours of 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. The help desk is the first place to call when hardware or software is not working correctly. This area also handles all of the help calls from the patient portal. Employees in this are Chuck Hartsell, Tajuana McIntosh, Bryan Gulas and Justin Pack. This area also handles printer problems by routing the ticket to Chris Smith and Mike Heis, who are Ricoh employees, the company we contract with to repair and maintain our printers.

Network services, consisting of Mark Pope and Scott Rogers, take care of all of the network servers. That entails adding new servers and building and configuring them, including all of the applications that we use outside of Meditech. They also handle new user additions, program updates, wireless networks, and even protect mobile devices being used. Along with doing all of this, they keep a watchful eye on several monitors to ensure that a job or service has not stopped running.

The Applications area consists of experts in all applications including Meditech, LSS, MPM, Midas, PICIS, SQL, Data Repository, etc. In general terms, the work performed here involves making the software work to enable better care for patients. Any new software will usually start here and takes anywhere from weeks to months to be installed. The employees in this area are Amy White, Jan Cook, Tami Pitts, Jo Blanchard, Cheryl Ivey, Jennifer Fetner and Hank Bragg.

The IS Department provides all these services and more not just at the Medical West main campus, but also at Medical West remote locations including the FED and physician clinic locations.

Medical West Information Systems hours are Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4:30 PM. The department also has an after-hours on-call phone for critical issues that can’t wait to be corrected on the next normal business day. - Bob Duckworth, Director of Information Systems

Evelyn Russo RetiresEvelyn Russo, Patient Access Rep, has retired after 36 years of dedicated and loyal service to Medical West. Thank you Evelyn, you will greatly be missed.

A Pat on the BackAnja West, Registered Nurse, recently received a positive comment from a patient.

“My mother has been on a ventilator since Monday, June 6, 2016. Nurse Anja has come to her room about every ten minutes to check on her and our family. It seems that nurses who genuinely care are few and far between. However, nurse Anja has shown so much love and compassion to the point she became emotional. This hospital visit has been the best we’ve experienced and I believe that’s because of the compassion and genuine desire to help the patient nurse Anja has displayed.”

Thank you Anja for making a difference. We appreciate you!
