Continuing research and innovationThanks to its proximity with its customers, LATTY® is geared up with the resources to respond to and anticipate new material, technical and legislative restric-tions.

Qualification is essential

This is across the board right from internal and/or laboratory testing at the CETIM to installation of the product in a power station.

At Electricité de France, a major and long-standing LATTY® customer, for a product to be awarded approval, it is essential that the design, materials and the suppliers are officially approved.

After equipping all type of French electricity power stations, LATTY® installs its mechanical seals in nuclear power stations in Belgium, Spain, China, etc.

In 1988 LATTY® supplied the first LATTY®seal B 11200 seals, via pump manufacturer GUINARD in Annecy, destined for the Chinese power plants of Daya Bay 1 and 2.

These pumps originally fitted with packing seals are now fitted with standard B 14810 mechanical seals, with silicium carbide surfaces. A pump liner supplied by LATTY® enables an adaptation without modification.Numerous 300 and 1300 Mw power stations use this equipment. The first was the St-Laurent power station in 1994.

The operating and interchangeabilty conditions, required by the customer, have led to a special design while retaining all of the construction strong points in the specification qualified by the EDF:

Following numerous exchanges and visits, LATTY® was entrusted with the complete installation of B 11610 seals and also with the supply of the cooling circuit.

This renewed confidence illus-trates a good commercial and technical follow-through, but also favourable feedback on the first installations.

The B 11200 Ø 74 and 102 mm mechanical seals, fitted to pressure EAS/ISBP electric pump units respectively, are derived from our products for the national 900 and 1300 Mw power stations.

The certifications obtained by analogy, and validated by industrial testing on EDF sites, along with the equipment reference documents, favour the decision and reassure the operator of the perform-ances of LATTY®seals.

The largely dimensioned lip seals fitted to the hundreds of tur-bines sited along rivers can be replaced by mechanical seals.

An enormous potential

After providing numerous industrial references, the LATTY® sales force has been able to widen its range of action and win new contracts with companies operating a large number of turbines.

With this product, LATTY® proposes major savings in maintenance and product rotation for the production of hydro-electric power.

Hydraulic

Reference case

The coordination of the service centres with the plant and its technical departments has strengthened LATTY’s® position with the EDF, to conclude the contract.

Upgrading the turbines with LATTY® mechanical seals was implemented progressively following the repair contract obtained by our service centres.

The first was commissioned in January 2004 by LATTY® technicians jointly with EDF, and after validation of these first-off units, LATTY® obtained a 3-year contract, renewed for 3 years in 2006, for equipment and maintenance.

The improvements made to the original equipment have enabled the presen-tation of a new project: the installation of a new seal with modifications to the environment and the unit, in order to optimise the seal lifespan.

In spite of the size of the shaft (320 mm diameter), and the difficult access to these installations, LATTY® has been able to continue to use the U 4222 series which has proven itself on a large number of units.

Assembly and adjustment are difficult phases, so LATTY® technicians assisted our customers for the first installations and trials and also participated in training the maintenance crews.

Ø 263Application

Accessibility for main-tenance of the turbines installed on our rivers is always very difficult and requires major handling equipment. Consequently, over the last few years, overhaul of this type of equipment has brought about a change in sealing systems in or-der to optimise lifespans, shorten servicing times and reduce the number of wear components.

divisible

Mechanical seal assemblies have been designed to a precise technical specification, which has enabled the definition of a compensated seal using only divisible friction surfaces, which integrate into the environment with no major modification to the turbine.

Depending on climatic variations, the turbidity of river waters can change (gravel, sand, etc.).

For this reason, an internal clean water circulating system has been installed provided by a pump propeller on the liner, feeding through a filter; the higher pressure thus obtained continually guarantees clear water and optimises lifespans. A friction surface wear indicator is also incorporated.

The operating conditions may be harsh, and as a general rule, the products have a high content and are highly corrosive. All the materials used in the composition of the seals must be suitable for use under abrasive and corrosive conditions, hence the "stationary" type design of seal with face rings in solid tungsten carbide and the wet parts in exotic grades of the Hastelloy® type, etc.
