The Right Decision

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Students have made a good choice by coming to BCIT. You academic experience is important. By getting involved in the BCIT community, students will feel a sense of belonging and that they are a part of something unique. The BCIT community offers a strong support network for students that they should utilize. Being a set rep/tech rep does not take a lot of time, and it allows you to be in contact with your classmates and keep them informed about important issues that affect them. It’s a great way to network and build rapport with your fellow students and faculty. Being a set rep/tech rep shows that you have initiative, are responsible and organized, and possess strong interpersonal skills. There are many opportunities to get involved during your time at BCIT. Some examples of how you can get involved include: volunteering, joining a club, working on campus, and being on committees such as Education Council.

Presentation Notes
Respect: It is a student’s right and responsibility to work in an environment that is respectful and safe. This means working with honesty and integrity, behaving in a manner that is not offensive or threatening to others, not participating in cheating or plagiarism, and conducting yourself with tact and diplomacy. Please see BCIT policies 5101, 5102, and 5104, which outline expectations around issues such as cheating, plagiarism, attendance, grade-related decisions, and marks reassessment. Students need to understand this policy so they are aware of what they can expect from BCIT, and understand their role and what is expected of them. Policies can be accessed through My.bcit.ca under the student resources tab or from http://www.bcit.ca/about/administration/policies.shtml. BCIT has a discrimination and harassment officer on campus for students, faculty, and staff to deal with sensitive issues/situations. Punctuality and attendance: BCIT has an attendance policy for all students. Punctuality means being respectful of others people’s time, and being on time for class, appointments, and group meetings. If a student misses more than 10% of a class, he or she may be subject to failure or asked to withdraw from the program. Explain that if something happens and a student is ill or unable to attend class due to a family emergency, he or she needs to be responsible and call someone from your area. You can let them know who to contact and provide contact info (email and phone, etc.).
