WELCOME FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

We are one of the largest and most prestigious schools of our kind in Australia, with 2500 student enrolments, 80 academic staff, 25 professional staff, and a total annual budget of over $23 million to support education and research.

Our mission is to nurture students to become industry leaders who will translate our research outcomes to generate societal, economic and environmental impacts. We foster strong partnerships with industry, government, and the community, and through these partnerships we address significant global challenges to meet demands of society, to improve lives, and to engineer a sustainable future.

Our staff and students continue to make an impact in Australia and around the world, and their contributions have won numerous prestigious awards and recognitions. With the state-of-the-art facilities, world class researchers and some of the country’s brightest engineering students, we are eager and uniquely placed to create transformational technologies to shape the future of industries.

The School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering is a leading provider of world class education and research; specialising in education for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. The School also continues to produce internationally acclaimed research, working closely with industry to provide innovative solutions to the sector.

WHAT WE DO

Largest mechanical engineering school in Australia – more than 2500 undergraduate and

postgraduate students and 90 staff members

Our staff are world experts in their fields both locally and internationally

Diverse set of mechanical engineering disciplines: aerospace, mechanical, advanced manufacturing,

mechatronic and robotics

We place strong importance on the translation of research into practice

Focus on creating the next generation of engineers and technologies

Due to recent investment, we are now home to many cutting-edge laboratory facilities

which are unique nationally

WAVES: WEAR, AEROACOUSTICS AND VIBRATION IN ENGINEERING SYSTEMS• Our focus is on

understanding, predicting and controlling noise, vibration and wear.

AMASE: ADVANCED MANUFACTURING, MATERIALS, AND STRUCTURES IN ENGINEERING• Improving products

and processes by making manufacturing more sustainable, increasing efficiency of small- and large-scale manufacturing, and improving management strategies.

• Enhancing the performance and multifunctional capabilities of structures and devices to meet extreme operating conditions.

• Developing multi-scale computational models to link structural performance to materials characteristics and manufacturing processes.

ROBOTICS AND AUTONOMOUS SYSTEMS• Working with state-of-the-art

sensors, we apply complex theories to the development of next generation robotic systems and autonomous vehicles and processing the data from them

ENGINEERED MEDICAL SOLUTIONS• Developing new technologies

for drug delivery, medical diagnostics, and medical treatments.

• Creating the next generation of biomaterials and medical devices.

ENERGY CONVERSION AND STORAGE• Using advanced

diagnostics and modelling to develop efficient, cost-effective and low-emissions engine concepts for applications in transportation (automotive, marine, and aviation) and power generation (reciprocating and gas-turbine engines).

• Alternative fuels utilisation including hydrogen and biofuels.

• Development of new battery and fuel cell technologies, including redox flow batteries.

• Research on new materials and technology that enhance the safe and sustainable deployment of nuclear energy.

CASE STUDIESEach year our academics and research centres work with businesses, government and community organisations on specific projects, transferring our research into practice. We are making an impact that matters with the following research:

ARC INDUSTRY TRANSFORMATION TRAINING CENTRE IN AUTOMATED MANUFACTURE OF ADVANCED COMPOSITES

1We aim to create new knowledge on novel green and durable fire-retardant materials, advanced fire models for urban and built environment, fire suppression technologies, and new flammability tests for compliance with fire safety regulatory standards.

Our researchers work with industry, academia and government to greatly improve the fire safety of lightweight materials, structures and fire protection systems while accelerating the transformation of Australia’s industries in producing new fire-retardant materials, high-value products and engineering services.

2Our research focuses on creating high-value, high-performance composites using high-rate, high-value and error-free processes. Our aim is to lower the barriers for Australian industry to access, engage, adopt and propagate advanced automated composite manufacturing innovations. We are home to the only research centre in the southern hemisphere with specialised Automated Fibre Placement facilities – using both Hot Gas Torch and Laser based.

Our researchers partner with national and international organisations to focus on:

• Material enhancement and characterisation

• Process-property optimisation

• Simulation and performance prediction

• Design,integration and optimisation
