The steam turbine shown in Figure 6-29 has been designed to extract energy from the steam flow going through it and convert that energy to work output. Equation 6-40 can easily be used to figure out how much work will be produced if it assumed that q (heat losses to surroundings) is zero and one is able to look up the value of each enthalpy value, h. The finding of h is the next thing we must focus on. Many devices can be analysed using the ideas of open systems (control volumes).
