WEEK 1 PLAYERS OF THE WEEK• Notre Dame’s Ray Russ, a senior from Willoughby, Ohio, was named the league’s Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Falcons to a 28-13 win over in-state rival Urbana. He was 20-of-37 for 301 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions against the Blue Knights. His 317 yards per game passing lead the MEC after two weeks.• Shepherd’s Shaneil Jenkins, a junior from District Heights, Md., is the MEC’s Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Rams to a shutout victory over Fairmont State. Jenkins finished the game with four tackles, two of which were sacks. He was part of an effort that held FSU to just 77 yards of total offense.• West Liberty’s Josh Wilson, a senior from Martins Ferry, Ohio, earned MEC Special Teams Player of the Week honors in the ‘Toppers narrow 27-24 win at Glenville State. He helped put West Liberty within a touchdown after a 31-yard field goal with two minutes left in the fourth quarter, and then his 43-yard effort in the second overtime proved to be the difference for WLU.

NEWS & NOTES• West Liberty’s double-overtime victory was the third overtime game in MEC history. All three overtime vic-tories were won by the road team. CU 9 at UC 3 (2OT)• WLU’s win over Glenville State snapped a six-game losing streak for the Hilltoppers dating back to last season.• SU quarterback Jeff Ziemba’s 16-of-16 passing against Fairmont State established a new confer-ence record for completion percentage. He also has currently completed 18-straight passes (going back to the first game), which is also a new league mark.• The Shepherd defense has posted four shutouts since the start of the 2013 season.• Shepherd has held its opponents to under 100 yards rushing in 11 of its last 12 regular season games dat-ing back to last season. • Concord quarterback Brian Novak has shown im-provements in two key areas so far this season com-pared to numbers from 2013. Novak is completing 69.4 percent of his passes, up from 53.5 last year.

He also has six touchdowns against one interception, compared to eight TDs and 16 picks a season ago.• Concord has yet to allow a sack so far in 2014.• UC is the last team to play a home game this week as it takes on UVa-Wise. West Virginia State will make its first road trip of the season as it travels to West Liberty.• Charleston running back Marvin Elam leads the league in rushing with 240 yards in the first two games. His five rushing touchdowns are tied with two others for the most in the MEC. • Notre Dame’s Ray Russ is the only quarterback in the MEC to throw for over 300 yards in both games this season. He has thrown for 300 yards or more six times since 2013.• NDC defensive back Marlon Oden is the only player in the conference to record an interception in each of the first two games this season.• Urbana had more first downs and more total offense in each of its first two games.• After missing the second half of the first game against Charleston, WVWC quarterback Jeremy Musselman returned to throw for 317 yards in a win over UVa-Wise.• Bobcat running back Michael Anderson is second in the league in rushing with 117 yards per game, but has yet to find the end zone this season.• UVa-Wise’s Zack Blair shares the league lead in tackles for a loss with four.• West Virginia State has not allowed a score in the fourth quarter of a game this year.• Fairmont State has yet to attempt a field goal.• Glenville State has the second-best rushing attack in the Mountain East Conference averaging 229.5 yards per game.• GSC’s Rahmann Lee needs just eight more rushing yards to surpass the 3,000-yard mark for his career. He is fourth among active rushers in that category.

POLL POSITIONS• Shepherd remained 11th in both the AFCA poll and the D2Football.com poll. • Concord and Charleston each received votes in the AFCA poll.• This is the second-straight week that three MEC teams have been listed in the AFCA poll.

WELCOME BACK• Seventeen players who earned first team All-Moun-tain East Conference honors last season are back for 2014.• Shepherd has six players that earned first team All-MEC honors returning, including the league’s De-fensive Freshman of the Year in linebacker Octavius Thomas and All-America return man C.J. Davis.• The league’s leader in rushing (Rahmann Lee, GSC), scorer (Jabre Lolley, SU), tackles (Hayden Davis, NDC) and tackles for a loss (D’Gary Wallace, UU) return to the field this year. • Glenville State’s Rahmann Lee is sixth in the coun-try in rushing yards among active players heading into the 2014 season.

PRESEASON HONORS• Shepherd’s C.J. Davis earned preseason All-America honors from D2Football.com and Beyond-SportsNetwork.com. He was a first team returner on the BSN team, and a third team honoree by D2Foot-ball.com.• Four other players were named to the Beyond-SportsNetwork.com preseason All-America teams: Concord safety Davon Marion (2nd team), Shep-herd’s Jonathan Hammer (3rd team) and Isaiah Shelton (3rd team) and Urbana linebacker D’Gary Wallace (3rd team).

POLL POSITION PART II• The Shepherd Rams have been picked to repeat as Mountain East Conference football champions after a vote conducted by the league’s coaches. Shepherd collected 95 points in the poll and was picked to finish first on seven ballots.• Concord was picked second with 91 points and collected three first-place votes. Charleston was cho-sen third with 84 points and received the remaining first-place vote. Glenville State placed fourth (67), fol-lowed by West Virginia Wesleyan (60) and Urbana (58). Notre Dame and West Liberty were predicted to finish in a tie for seventh with 44 points, and Fairmont State (33), UVa-Wise (15) and West Virginia State (14) rounded out the poll.
