In paper and board mills... in a wide range ofconverting operations... and in plants processingtextiles, plastics, rubber or almost any web materi-al you can think of, you’ll find ABB PillowBlocktension measurement systems.

The performance of the PillowBlock load cellsis unsurpassed for applications characterized byheavy rolls, high speeds and severe conditions – insome instances they’re the only viable option.

The key reason is the operating principle.ABB PillowBlock load cells produce signals as aresult of magnetic change, which frees them fromthe inevitable limitations and design compromisesof measurement technologies relying on someform of physical movement.

The result is a load cell that combines strong,low-impedance signal output with an exceedinglystiff and rugged construction. A reliable, high-per-formance load cell with exceptional resistance tovibration, overloads, extreme temperatures andotherwise harsh environments.

A complete PillowBlock measuring systemconsists of appropriately sized load cells and a ten-sion electronics. A junction box is sometimes usedto simplify the cabling and reduce cabling costs.

ABB offers two different types of PillowBlockload cells: one design intended for conventionalvertical force measurement, and a sec-ond, unique design that measures

Keeping the tensionconstant in webprocesses is essentialfor high product qualityand productivity

only the horizontal force component resultingfrom web tension on a roll.

Several models and nominal loads are availablein standard stainless steel constructions as well asin acid-resistant and mill-duty versions.

The user-friendly digital signal-processingelectronics provides a high level of functionality tocover a wide range of applications.

How the Measurement Signal Is GeneratedTwo commonly used transducer types – the straingauge and the LVDT transducer – rely on physical

movement in the trans-ducer to produce ameasurement signal (seedrawings). Stretching, compression or bend-

ing motions are prerequisites for signal generation.ABB’s exclusive Pressductor Transducer pro-

duces a signal as a result of changes in an electro-magnetic field. Thisoperating principlehas its origin in ametallurgical phe-nomenon accordingto which mechani-cal forces alter thecapacity of some steels to convey magnetic flux.

Two perpendicular windings of copper wirearound a steel core combine to provide the transduc-

ers measurement sig-nal. A magnetic field iscreated in one of thewindings, sized so thereis no magnetic couplingbetween them.

When the transduc-er is subjected to aforce, the magneticfield pattern changes. A

portion of the field couples with the second windingand induces an AC voltage. This voltage – a com-paratively strong transducer signal that is propor-tional to the force – is converted by the load cellsystem’s electronics into the system output.

The Pressductor ® differenceLike ABB’s other load cells based on Pressductor®

Technology, PillowBlock Load Cells rely on electro-magnetic changes in the transducer, not on physicalmovement, to sense fluctuations in web tension. The Pressductor® Technology operating principleprovides exceptional improvements in load cell per-formance characteristics, including reliability(notably absence of drift), durability, repeatability, and wider measurement range.

Machined from a solid block of steel, theload cells are rugged and stiff, affording highoverload protection as well as an extended meas-urement range above the nominal capacity. Andthey won’t contribute to machine vibration, evenat high speeds.

Since the transducer action – the magneticflux – takes place inside a steel core, environmen-tal factors like dirt or fluids can’t degrade per-formance and reliability.

Furthermore, low transducer impedance – lessthen a couple of ohms – helps eliminate suscepti-bility to radio-frequency and electromagnetic inter-ference.

Strain gauge: Stretching altersresistance of electrical circuits.

LVDT: Movement of piston causessignal change in output coils.

Pressductor® Technology:Mechanical force alters mag-netic field.

There is a PillowBlock load cell suitable for most web processing machineryused in the paper processing industries. In the paper industry, the PillowBlock load cells are ideal in wire, felt and dryersections as well as in coaters, calenders and winders.

In the converting industry, the PillowBlock load cells have proven their superi-or performance in laminator and coater machinery.

Extended-RangeOperationAn extended range ofmeasurement beyondthe nominal load allowsthe PillowBlocks to besized for normal, asopposed to maximum, tension levels. As aresult, they permitgreater applicationflexibility on the webprocessing machinery.

Measurement essentialsKeeping the tension constant in sheet or webprocesses is essential for high product quality andproductivity. Continuously measuring the tensionis an obvious prerequisite for tension control.Drives and operator instruments need quick andaccurate input to regulate tension levels and mon-itor machine performance.

Most web processing lines put a premium onlong-term reliability, in addition to accuracy andoverall performance. The measurement system, after all, is the front line of machine control, exposed to all the rigors of the operating environ-ment. The costs associated with downtime andpoor product bring out the true value of its com-ponents.

Quality measurement technology for superiortension control that will keep your processinglines productive and producing top-notch out-put... that’s what you can expect from us. We’reentirely devoted to providing process measure-ment systems and services, and we have 50 yearsof experience in the field. We’re the experts in weband strip tension as well as force measurement forvirtually any purpose.

Selecting and sizing load cellsTwo types of ABB PillowBlock load cells aredesigned for either conventional vertical forcemeasurement or to sense the horizontal forcecomponent that may arise as the processed mate-rial partially wraps around a measurement roll.

Using the “horizontal” load cells can be quiteadvantageous. By design, they can be made excep-tionally sturdy, rugged, and stiff. So, requirementsfor recalibration, other maintenance, or replace-ment are negligible, and they won’t contribute tomachine vibration. Since they don’t measure thetare weight, but just the horizontal force compo-nent of the web tension, they can be sized smallerthan otherwise possible, measuring tension withgreater accuracy.

Application requirements may dictate theselection of a “vertical” load cell. But whenever anadequate horizontal force component is present(or can be developed), the horizontal cell shouldbe considered.

Application HintTwo “10 percent” appli-cation guidelines areuseful in selecting loadcell sizes:

11.. The proportion ofweb tension that

is actually sensed by theload cell should be atleast 10 percent of totalweb tension. For opera-tional conditions pro-ducing values below 10percent, consult ABB.

22.. During normaloperation, the

sensed force should notbe less than 10 percentof the load cell’s capacity.

Specifying the load cellSince load cells are typically used at both ends ofa roll, rating the individual cell is usually based onhalf of the resultant force. The ideal load cell sizeis usually the smallest nominal capacity ratingaccommodating that force level, so long as theforce exceeds 10 percent of the nominal load. Before choosing a larger size, however, considerusing the “extended range” feature of ABB loadcells. And always verify that overload specifica-tions will not be exceeded in either direction.

The size, or nominal load, of a load cell is con-tingent on the anticipated force it will measure. When a “vertical” load cell is mounted horizontal-ly (the most common arrangement), the measure-ment force (FR) is a function of the tension in theweb (T), the deflection angles (α and β), and thetare weight of the roll and bearings (Tare).

The “horizontal” load cell senses the web ten-sion’s (T) horizontal component (FR); not the ver-tical force (FV).

In this scenario, the measurement force (FR) isa function of only the tension in the web (T) andthe web angles (α and β). Since the tare force –the weight of the deflector roll and bearings – willnot be measured, it can be very large compared tothe web tension without affecting the accuracy ofthe tension measurement.

FRtot=FR+Tare=T(sinα+sinβ)+TareFVtot=FV=T(cosβ-cosα)

FRtot=FR=T(cosβ-cosα)FVtot=FV+Tare=T(sinβ+sinα)+Tare

Pressductor® PillowBlock Load Cells– h o r i z o n t a l f o r c e m e a s u r e m e n t 1 0 - 1 0 0 k N

ABB’s “horizontal”Pressductor® load cellsare specificallydesigned for horizontalforce measurement.

Key advantages:• Smaller load cell

sizes can be speci-fied since the tareweight won’t be afactor

• Inherently sturdierdesigns are virtuallymaintenance-free.

• No contribution tomachine vibration.

In many web processes, the web tension inherent-ly produces a horizontal force component on aroll... or, by design, it can be made to do so. Papermachines and machinery processing plastics, foilsor textiles are typical examples.

Using this horizontal force component tomeasure web tension can be highly advanta-geous. The load cell can be sized to measure justthe web tension, excluding the tare weight ofthe roll, which, on a big paper machine, forexample, can be far greater than the tension inthe sheet. The result is optimized measurementaccuracy.

Another advantage is that ABB’s unique hori-zontal load cell – specifically designed to measurethis force component – provides stiffness levelsand overload tolerances in all force directions thatare significantly greater than what can be achievedwith vertical load cells.

Solid stainless steel construction combinessensitivity and accuracy with exceptional rugged-ness and high spring constant. The units tolerateoverloads up to ten times their nominal capacity, and combined with the electronics are designed toprovide stable output even when subjected tointense vibration.

Four different models, with force measure-ment capacities ranging from 0.5 kN (112 lbs.) to100 kN (22,500 lbs.), make up the family of hori-zontal load cells (PFTL 201 and PFTL 101).Each model is available in several nominal loads;the family can cover the highest tension levelsencountered in any industry.

Two versions of the PFTL 201 are available:• The standard version PFTL 201C/D equipped

with Cannon connector for the connectioncable.

• The mill-duty version PFTL 201CE/DE withfixed connection cable in protective hose, bestsuited for wire and felt tension applications inpaper machines.

ABB PillowBlock horizontal load cells are idealin applications characterized by low tension levels, heavy rolls and high operating speeds – a scenariooften encountered in the paper industry.

The PillowBlock comes in three versions: Thestandard Version, PFTL 101A/B, is often used foraccurate measurement in the paper industry, forinstance paper machines, calenders, coaters andwinders. Load cells are designed for demandingapplications with, for instance, heavy rolls, widetension range and high speed.

For web tension measurement in dryer sectionsin paper machines, the mill-duty version, PFTL101AE/BE, is recommended. This version has afixed connection cable and a degree of protectionof IP 66, which provides accurate and reliablemeasurement with long service life.

The acid resistant version, PFTL 101AER/BER,is designed for the wet end of the paper machinesand has a degree of protection of IP 66/67(>Nema 4).

All load cells are delivered standard calibrated.

Application Hint

Horizontallymeasuring load

cells are ideal in appli-cations with high tareloads and relativelysmall tensions, such aspaper machines.

In applicationswhere high over-

loads can occur in anydirection, the high over-load tolerance in alldirections of ABB’s hori-zontal PillowBlock loadcell adds reliability.

If no horizontalresultant force is

present, mounting theload cell on a slant willgive rise to one.

Pressductor® PillowBlock Load Cells– v e r t i c a l f o r c e m e a s u r e m e n t 5 . 0 - 5 0 . 0 k N

For applications thatdemand vertical forcemeasurement, thestandard and mill-dutyversions of ABB’s “ver-tical” PillowBlock loadcell provide the best inmeasurement rangeand durability.

Extended-RangeOperationAn extended range ofmeasurement beyondthe nominal load allowsABB’s PillowBlock loadcells to be sized fornormal, as opposed tomaximum, tension lev-els. As a result, theypermit greater applica-tion flexibility on theweb processingmachinery.

These units are designed for web tension measure-ment in applications where it is essential oradvantageous to determine the vertical force com-ponent.

Machined from a single block of stainlesssteel, they have exceptionally high tolerance foroverloads, shock and impact, in addition to highimmunity to dust and corrosion.

The standard construction is of highly resist-ant stainless steel with potted internal compo-nents. Mill-duty versions are available for excep-tionally hostile environments. They’re ideal for thewet end of a paper machine.

The family of “vertical” load cells comprisesunits in four operating ranges offering measure-ment capacities from 5 kN (1,125 lbs.) to morethan 50 kN (11,250 lbs.), covering applicationswith tensions levels in excess of 1,000 kN(225,000 lbs.).

ABB’s vertical load cells, like their counter-parts for horizontal measurement, feature anextended operating load range. Up to 50 percentmore measurement capacity is available in thisrange with fully retained performance characteris-tics, except some decline in measurement accura-cy. As a result, in most applications, the load cells

can safely be specified for the web’s normal ten-sion range, but still will accommodate substantialpeak loads.

In fact, both types of ABB PillowBlock loadcells feature an exceptionally wide measurementrange. With the capacity to measure web and striptension ranges of up to 30:1, they provide valu-able machine versatility in processing a variety ofapplications.

Installation in existing equipment can be sim-plified by use of top and bottom adapter plates, which can be supplied by ABB.

Two versions are available:• The standard version PFCL 201C equipped

with Cannon connector for the connectioncable.

• The mill-duty version PFCL 201CE withfixed connection cable in protective hose, bestsuited for wire and felt tension applications inpaper machines.

Tension Electronics– br ing ing someth ing new to web tens ion

The basic function ofthe tension electronicsis to provide a 330 Hzexcitation to the tensionload cells and toprocess the measure-ment signals. It alsoprovide outputs for con-trol and/or indication ofthe measured tension.

The signal process-ing function of the ten-sion electronics ampli-fies, rectifies, and filtersthe measurement sig-nals from the load cellsand provides an accu-rate and reliable outputsignal.

PFEA 111A cost effective, compact and user friendly tensionelectronics providing an accurate and reliable fastanalog SUM signal from two load cells for controland/or monitoring. The display can show the SUMindividual A & B and difference signal. The smallsize and DIN-rail mount make this unit very easyto integrate into many types of electrical cabinets.

PFEA 112This unit provides the same functionality and userfriendliness as the PFEA 111 with the addition offieldbus communication via Profibus-DP.

PFEA 113This advanced tension electronics can supply upto four load cells and has six configurable analogoutputs for control and/or monitoring of webtension. The output signals are also available onProfibus-DP.

Another useful feature is the possibility to, viathe digital input or Profibus, switch the gain fortwo different web paths. Alternatively, the digitalinput could be used for remote gain scheduling orzero set. This unit also includes a self-diagnosticfunction and four configurable digital outputs foralarms and level detection. Status of self-diagnosticfunctions are also available on Profibus-DP.

By combining up to three PFEA 113 the sys-tem can handle segmented roll applications, i.e.winders, with up to 12 load cells.

The high level of functionality and user-friendliness make the PFEA 113 one of the mostcomplete tension electronics on the market.

Covering a wide range of applications the TensionElectronics comes in three versions, with differentlevels of performance and functionality. All threeversions have multi-language digital display andconfiguration keys. The configuration keys beingused for setting different parameters and to checkthe status of the tension system. The 2 x 16 char-acter display can present sum, difference or indi-vidual load cell signals. All three versions are avail-able in both DIN-rail version and enclosed IP65(NEMA 4) version for mounting in more severeenvironments.

• Analog outputsIndividual scaling and filtering of all analogoutputs.

• Fieldbus communicationVersions PFEA 112 and PFEA 113 have field-bus communication via Profibus-DP as stan-dard. In contradiction to many other tensionsystems the PFEA 112 and PFEA 113 providea scaled and zeroed tension output ready foruse in control or monitoring.

• PC-configurablePFEA 113 can beconfigured from aPC via RS-232.

• Filter functionAll units come witha selectable filterfunction forremoval of rollunbalance, machinevibrations andother disturbances.

• Built-in self diagnosticsThe electronics continuously supervise a num-ber of important parameters and provideserror messages if something goes wrong.

• Commissioning without calibration weightsAll Pressductor load cells are standard calibrat-ed to the same sensitivity before delivery fromABB factory. This means that the fastest andmost accurate way to commission a tensionsystem is to use a calculated value instead ofusing calibration weights.
