Yesterday… • We reviewed imperialism of

have learned about so far this school year.

Today...• We will be reviewing the Great Depression and Industrial Revolution

including:

– Ways that these eras were the same and ways that they were different.

– Assessing the problems and successes that came along with both eras.

Why?

– Ms. Bush and Ms. Wiedemann noticed that many of you got the events and characteristics of the Great Depression and Industrial Revolution mixed up and we want to clarify the differences between the two before your interim!

Industrial RevolutionExplanation: • Child labor was NOT illegal yet. Children were often

put to work to help support families. • Their smaller size made them ideal for working in

factories and mines. • Could be paid less

Industrial RevolutionExplanation: • The Bessemer process, developed in 1856, allowed

factories to mass produce steel. Before all metal objects were made from iron, copper, aluminum and tin. Steel is stronger and more durable

• Part of the new developments of the second industrial revolution

Industrial RevolutionExplanation: • This image shows urbanization. Urbanizations was when

people moved from the country into towns and cities in search for work.

• There were MANY jobs available because of new factories

• Urbanization resulted in overcrowded cities and unsanitary living conditions (tenement housing)

Great Depression Explanation: • Many families lost their source of income. With no

income they had little food to eat.

• Children (and their families) were often fed at soup kitchens by organizations like schools, YMCA, and Salvation Army

Industrial RevolutionExplanation: • This image shows the magnitude (how big) the

British Empire was. Imperialism was a consequence of industrialization because countries needed raw materials and a new market to sell their manufactured goods.

Great DepressionExplanation: • The Dust Bowl, a drought in the Midwest of the

US caused farmers to lose a lot of money because they were not able to farm.

• Created black blizzards also known as dust storms

Industrial RevolutionExplanation: • Industry means using raw materials to make

manufactured goods. • This picture shows a textile mill (factory) where

cloth was made from raw materials.

Great Depression Explanation: • Over 2 million people were homeless because they

had lost their jobs during the GD.• With no income families could not pay their bills

and lost their homes. • Many people built “shanties” (shack homes) in

parks and public spaces.

Industrial RevolutionExplanation: • The rise of factories created the industrial working

class. A social class of people who worked long hours in poor conditions to keep their job.

• No labor laws protect workers because this is a new problem the British are experiencing.

Great DepressionExplanation: • Many families struggled with unemployed parents

and lived with just the bare minimum or less during the GD.

Great DepressionExplanation: • Men were expected to provide for the family,

however many were unable to get jobs because the unemployment rate was SO high.

• Men struggled with not being able to provide, sometimes leaving their families in search of work

Industrial RevolutionExplanation: • Before the industrial revolution began, small

business made goods in homes using family workers. These was known as cottage industries

Great DepressionExplanation: • Due to financial stress and Dust Bowl, many

families (especially men) packed up and moved west in the hopes to find jobs.

• It is estimated 2.5 million people moved from the Midwest to California

Industrial RevolutionExplanation: • A thresher, a farming machine, was used to separate grain

from its husk. This improved farming which allowed farmers to grow and harvest more crops

better farming → more food → more people → more workers

Great DepressionExplanation: • This was a family of drought refugees from Texas.

The family of seven were seeking work in California. They lived in a tent because that’s what they could afford.

Great DepressionExplanation: • At its highest of 25%, unemployment (in the U.S.) was

one of the largest problems everyday families encountered. Men tried different strategies to get hired.

• We wrapped up our human timeline activity by creating a timeline of our own to keep and study over the weekend for your Interim on Tuesday.

• We also began to talk about the major differences between the Industrial Revolution and Great Depression based on the image Gallery Walk around the classroom.

Today...● We will finish up going over our Industrial Revolution vs. Great

Depression Gallery Walk to get a clear understanding of the differences between the two events.

● Next, we will complete a Venn Diagram Exit Ticket over the similarities and differences between the two events

● Lastly, we will begin to go over and work on our Cycle II Interim Review Guide!

● To get started make eye contact with the person that you traded papers with yesterday and, when I say GO, trade papers again!

• We WANT YOU TO STUDY for your Interim, therefore, you will earn 5 extra points on your Interim with a parent signature, length of time studied (at least 30 mins), and date filled out on your Interim Review Guide.

• Your interim is made up of:

– 8 Short Answer/Chart Questions

– 2 of the 8 Short Answer Questions are for EXTRA CREDIT!
