Volunteer News March 2019 Fires & other emergencies At our lunch sites, we are doing Fire Drills in March. This means practice evacuating the building. When we do drills we are less likely to panic and make mistakes in an emergency . For Successful Evacuation at lunch sites: Assist disabled persons Everyone must leave the building Check the bathrooms and other rooms Take the dining room sign-in sheet to check people off Gather in the designated meeting spot Check in with a designated person Do not leave without telling the designated person Do not re-enter the building without approval During an earthquake: Do not leave the building while the building is shaking. If there is damage to the building, evacuate following the guide above. If there is a gas leak, do not start your car engine, the spark could ignite a fire. At home, take this time to think about how you would evacuate your home in a fire or earthquake. Make a plan! Wendy Fertschneider, R.D.

Want to know who cooks all that delicious food you enjoy from our kitchen? Meet Antonia, the main cook of our program, and one of only two cooks in our kitchen. Antonia has been cooking for Meals That Connect for 17 years, and she likes everything about her job, even getting to work at 5 a.m., though she says that’s “hard.” Originally from Guerrero, Mexico, she came to this country in 1990 with her husband, whom she married the year before at age 15. She and her husband have three sons, ages 18, 21, and 27. Antonia’s husband and middle son both work for the maintenance department at Cal Poly. One son works at Staples, and the other at Firestone Brewery in SLO. When asked what is the most difficult food she has to prepare, she said the chicken legs and the lasagna. Both require two full days of preparation. In the photo, she is working on the pea salad, a
favorite among our seniors. ¡Gracias, We are so thankful for Cal Poly students, Claire,
Liz and Kristie from Delta Gamma Sorority for volunteering their time in the Central Kitchen.
