Offer vs. Serve
District 87 participates in “Offer vs. Serve” in our cafeteria. This is a concept
to allow students more choice in their meals while limiting waste of food. Each student has the option daily of
receiving all 5 meal components (listed below), but MUST select 3 of 5 with one
being either a fruit or a vegetable:
1. Grain (up to 2 equivalents)2. Meat/meat alternate (protein)
(up to 2 equivalents)3. Fruit (may take up to 2 at BHS)
4. Vegetable (may take up to 2 at all schools)
5. Milk
*Often the grain and meat/meat alternate are combined into the entrée (ex: chicken
sandwich on bun). While “1 item” actually counts as “2 components” in the “offer vs.
serve” definition.
If you or your child is ever unsure what he/she can eat, please do not hesitate to ask!
**Special note, at breakfast, we participate in Offer vs. Serve as well; however the rules are slightly different. Each student as the option
of receiving all 4 meal components (listed below), but MUST select 3 of the 4 with one
being a fruit.
1. Grain or meat/meat alternate2. Grain or meat/meat alternate
3. Fruit (may take up to 2 at all schools)4. Milk
