Approximately 30 residents attended the 2 hour-long meeting. The main purpose of the annual meeting is to conduct elections of Board members who terms expire September 30. Incumbents Bob Grahl, Gene Bennett, and Carole Leandra received nominations from the nominating committee and the floor entertained nominations for one vacancy on the board. Larry Haig, a long time resident and former City Councilman from Florida was nominated and seconded from the floor. A unanimous vote by acclamation for the slate of candidates concluded the election. An open discussion followed where residents asked questions of the Board and made general comments to the Board. Several residents asked how they could report outages and general disrepair of streetlights. Outages and repairs can be reported to Oncor Electric by calling 1-888-313-4747 or through Oncor’s website, www.oncor.com. Per Public Utility Commission of Texas rules, Oncor has 15 days to complete a repair once notified, however they strive to complete standard repairs (burned out bulbs, photocells) in 5 days or less. Yard of the MonthWhat a wonderful time of the year! The nights are cool and we

are getting that much needed RAIN. Many of you have worked very hard to keep your yards green and your shrubs and trees alive. Look at what a little rain can do for our yards!!

There are so many beautiful yards to pick from this month so I have picked a yard that has used landscaping to keep the yard beautiful and to conserve water during this dry season. The yard has a balance of flowers and shrubs to enhance the area that is designed for beauty and relaxation.

I would be grateful for your help in picking a list of beautiful yards and tell us why they are your choice.

The winner for October is: 8905 Joachim Lane

Questions were raised about the intersection of O’Connor and Pocono Drives. An unusual lane shift occurs on O’Connor Dr that direct eastbound traffic into a westbound turn lane. Many accidents and near accidents have occurred in recent months. A noticeable increase in traffic passing through our neighborhood has been observed. Future plans to connect O’Connor Dr. with TX-45 Toll Road will only add to this problem. Residents are urged to be extra careful when passing through this intersection. The HOA Board will be writing a letter to the County Commissioners seeking assistance.

Following the open discussion, Chairman of the Board, Bob Grahl, reflected on this year’s accomplishments, challenges and goals for FY 2010. Among those, Grahl highlighted the HOA’s sponsorship of the very successful and popular 2nd Annual Brushy Creek Backyard BBQ Cook-off, a reduction in delinquencies to less than 1.6%, replacing a deteriorating drinking fountain in Pepper Rock Park, the addition of a dog watering station and resuming Yard of the Month.

Accomplishments that will be most noticeable is the approval and funding of the Phase I fence project that replaces the fence on O’Connor Drive from Great Oaks Drive to Pocono Drive. Once legal issues are resolved, construction could begin soon. Funding for this project was accomplished by good old-fashioned belt tightening. Bob Grahl discussed the economic recession - home sales have slowed but not stopped in our community. Resale of homes is down 45% from 2008. He was proud to note that the sale price(s) of homes in the Meadows HOA is noticeably higher per square foot than those in most surrounding neighborhoods.

Also noted were challenges for the next few years to come. Bradford Pear trees in the median strip at Pocono Drive near O’Connor are nearing the end of their lifespan and will need to be removed and or replaced. The Meadows entry sign at Pepper Rock Park has a weakness in the foundation that has caused a large crack in the stone wall. Bob Grahl anticipates the costs to be expensive.

Goals set for 2010 are to improve the HOA website, eliminate delinquencies, resume the “Welcome Package” to new homeowners and to complete the Phase I fence project.

Refreshments were served and drawings were held. The following door prizes were awarded:

Visa Gift Cards: Cris Yackle Dave Pettit Ernest Sinclair Jennifer Meadows Virgil FinleyDallas Cowboys tickets (2), game of choice: Mark AyotteThank you to all that attended, and that you to those that

submitted their proxy. Without you, the annual meeting would not have occurred!

emergency? We do.

The fifteenth annual Hairy Man Festival was held on Saturday, October 3rd, 2009 at Cat Hollow Park, despite intermittent rain. The festival featured children’s activities, such as a miniature train, pony rides, petting zoo, moonwalk, rock wall, hair and face painting and more. Another section of the festival held food and drink booths, such as the McNeil FFA food booth, which sold hamburgers and the Brushy Creek Marlins Swim Team sold fresh cut french fries and snow cones. Many of the food and games booth are operated by local charities and nonprofit organizations to benefit their programs. Additionally, at least twenty arts and crafts booths sold a variety of handmade items, such as Linda Jewett, who was selling handmade greeting cards and other paper items. The family friendly festival also raises money for several area charities and this year, it also benefited The Pajama Program, which provides pajamas and books to children in need. Many of the children who benefit from The Pajama Program are foster children or children living in orphanages. Several area food banks, including the Round Rock Serving Center, collect food at the event. The 2008 festival raised over $30,000 for local charities. The festival is named in honor of the Hairy Man, a local legend. Stories have long been told in the area along Brushy Creek, with bluffs hanging with ferns, where a very hairy man lived in a cave.

Some say he was a baby left behind by travelers in covered wagons who was raised by wild animals and then jumped out to scare others who came close to the area where he lived. A road, located near the creek between Round Rock and Cedar Park, is named Hairy Man Road. In honor of the Hairy Man.The highlight of the festival is the annual Hairiest Man Contest, where judges choose the man with the most hair. This year the top prize was $500. Nine contestants vied for the prize, dancing to the music and removing their shirts. Lisa Birkman, Williamson County Commissioner Lori Scott, executive director of the Round Rock Serving Center; Tom Clark, general manager of Brushy Creek MUD; Cris Yackle, Vice-President of the Brushy Creek MUD board of directors; Melissa Edwards of Community Impact newspaper and Christy of the musical group, Christy and the Ploughboys served as judges. Contestant #12 was the hairiest, but several others were also extremely hairy. In fact, some contestants appeared from a distance to be wearing a costume, but, upon closer inspection, the hair was their own. All in all, it was fun event again for the 15th time! For more information: on the Hairy Man Festival- http://www.HairyManFestival.org and on The Pajama Project- http://www.pajamaproject.org.

EAT RIGHT TIp Of THE MONTHTHAW YOUR THANKSGIVING TURKEY SAFELY

If you have purchased a frozen turkey for your Thanksgiving feast, be sure to thaw the bird adequately before cooking. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, there are three ways to thaw your turkey safely: in the refrigerator, in cold water and in the microwave.

In the refrigerator: (40 degrees F or below) allow approximately 24 hours for every four to five pounds of bird. For example, a 12- to 16-pound turkey would require 3 to 4 days and a 16- to 20-pound bird would take 4 to 5 days to thaw.

In cold water: Allow approximately 30 minutes per pound. A 12- to 16- pound turkey would take about 6 to 8 hours and a 16- to 20-pound bird 8 to 10 hours. Seal the turkey

securely in plastic to make sure no water leaks in and use only cold water. Change the water every 30 minutes and cook the turkey immediately

after thawing. In the microwave: Check your owner's manual for

the size turkey that will fit in your microwave oven, the minutes per pound, and power level to use for thawing. Remove all outside wrapping. Place on a microwave-safe dish to catch any juices. Cook the turkey immediately after thawing and do not refreeze or refrigerate a raw turkey after thawing in the microwave oven. (Reprinted by permission, and attributed to the American

Dietetic Association.)

What Is Recyclable?

Recyclable items that are accepted: newspaper, magazines, white office paper, aluminum, steel and tin cans, milk jugs, clear and colored plastic bottles (please remove any caps or lids off the plastic bottles). Thanks for recycling!
