Dear Meadow Pointe residents,

The winner of July’s issue Hidden Picture Contest is Dick Lambert.

The winner of the cover contest for the August issue is Jenny Fuentes.Dick and Jenny have won 2 tickets, each, to MOSI. Please send in your photos and hidden picture entries to [email protected].

School will soon be back in session and all that summer fun with our children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews will fade back into the background till next summer. It is so much fun to be with them during this time and so much fun to see them off again to experience new adventures and take a bit of a break ourselves.

Send us any great summer pictures you may have taken. The fourth of July was a pretty big event for most,

this year and luckily the rain stopped just in time to enjoy fireworks.

For August make sure to mark these IMPORTANT dates on your calendar. August 1st:  Respect Parent’s Day (should this not be 365 days?), August 3rd:  International Forgiveness Day, August 4th:  Taxpayers Appreciation Day (still waiting for my gift from last year), August 6th:  National Fresh Breath Day, August 8th: Admit You’re Happy Day and cannot leave out Aspirin’s birthday, which is August 10th (thank you!). Enjoy all holidays and celebrate life everyday!

cHecK STOrm drainS durinG Heavy rainS

Because street storm drains carry rain into our pond system, it is vital that these drains remain clear. Mulch, sticks, and other things may wash into the streets during heavy rains and cause the openings of the storm drains to clog. If clogs are not removed, water will back up onto the street surface very quickly and then into yards. Residents need to check storm drain openings on their streets during heavy rains and remove any clogs. For maintenance of these structures, call (813) 996-7341 and ask for Pasco County Public Works Dept.

When Are You NOT required To STop for A School BuS?

provisions of this section – FS 316.172(2).

According to Pasco County Sheriff Department, the above Florida Statute applies to County Line Road

in Meadow Pointe CDD and MP II. Vehicles traveling in the opposite direction of a

school bus do not have to stop.

Prior to opening Bliss Facial Spa in August of 2010, I had always thought that day spas

were for “high maintenance” people, which I did NOT consider myself to be. I assumed that they offered over-priced, fluffy, feel good services that I could do without. I am a CPA by trade and had never been one to treat myself to those types of indulgences. However, after being in the industry for the past two years, I can tell you that skin care is a necessity, not a luxury!

There really are very few things in the beauty industry as important as regular and effective skin care for the face. I, like many of you, have struggled with the idea of getting a facial regularly because I didn’t see the value in it. I didn’t

know what I didn’t know! I had never received microdermabrasion or peels so I had no idea what a difference it could make in my skin. With monthly peels or microdermabrasion and daily use of Image Skincare products that contain very high and active levels of salicylic, glycolic, peptides, and other anti-aging ingredients, I can tell you that my skin looks 10 years younger today than it did 2 years ago! Day spas are not a luxury, today they are a necessity, and Bliss Facial Spa makes it affordable so that everyone can get the skin care treatments needed to look and feel their best!

At Bliss Facial Spa our estheticians are highly trained and experienced,

BlIss FacialSpa

they know what they are doing and they do it well. Our prices include all the luxury and protocol of a high end spa without the high end price. You will not be charged more for extractions or a mask or a facial massage, it’s all included and upfront in our prices. You get the real deal here!

We are so excited to announce that Bliss Facial Spa is now offering HydraFacial™ as seen on Real Housewives, The Doctors, and soon to be on Dr. Oz. It is the newest advance in non-laser skin resurfacing. It combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, hydration and antioxidant protection all at the same time! HydraFacial™ treatments improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, congested and enlarged pores, oily or acne-prone skin, and hyperpigmentation. HydraFacial™ is safe and effective

on all skin types and ethnicities; even the most sensitive skin.

Call today for your free skin consultation and to make an appointment for a HydraFacial™, a facial that you will soon find that you can’t live without! v

Bliss Facial Spa is owned by Vicky Lysenko and is located at 1059 Bruce B. Downs Blvd., Wesley Chapel. Call today for an appointment 813-428-5991.

To further enhance your gated experience we now have key chain remotes. They are available at the clubhouse for $25.  We also keep the universal 2 button remotes in stock for the same price.  These remotes will open the gate and the second button can be programmed to most ga-rage door openers on the market.

Several of our gated communi-ties have experienced changes to their exit gates.  You may have noticed the gates open a little sooner than usual when you are leaving. This is because we added an extra vehicle loop for that reason. The intention isn’t to speed every one up. It actually doesn’t affect most

drivers’ speed at all. Before, drivers would actually acceler-ate to catch the gate before it closed if there was a somewhat steady flow of cars, just to have to slam on brakes to wait for it to reopen. Now, everyone moves at a steady rate.  Another added benefit is the gates haven’t ex-changed paint with a vehicle since installing the new

loops. The entrance gates have multi colored paint on the other hand. Thank you, Robert Saliva

There are a number of tasks that you as a homeowner need to be aware of for proper

maintenance of your home’s HVAC system. Regularly changing the air filter in your furnace, air conditioner, and indoor air quality system should be at the top of your list.

While it may not be immediately obvious why it is so important to

change these, air filters can have a major impact on your health, the efficiency of your HVAC system, and the comfort level of your family.

Problems Caused by dirty air Filters

Air filters are rated for a certain duration, if they are not properly replaced or cleaned at the end of that

time period, a number of problems can develop that may result in costly maintenance for you system.

• Inadequate Air Flow - A clean air filter is designed to let air pass through without interrupting the flow of the system. A dirty air filter, however, is filled with debris like pet hair and dander, dust, dirt and mold spores. This can slow air flow and put extra pressure on your HVAC system to maintain temperature. Over time, a dirty air filter can result in undue stress on your furnace motor or blower fan or the compressor in your air conditioner.

• Poor Indoor Air Quality - Again, a clean air filter is amazingly effective at removing these particles from the air circulated through your home. However, when the filter is clogged, those same particles can be thrown back into the air and actually make indoor air quality worse.

Knowing When to Change Your Filters Almost every component of your HVAC system has some sort of filter. Most people don’t know that they will need to change their filter every 30-90 days. You should refer to your user manual to find out how often your particular filter should be changed. Permanent filters often need to be cleaned once every 30-60 days, especially HEPA filters, which can get clogged easily. Disposable filters will vary slightly based on their overall MERV rating and the material used in the filter, but they are rarely rated for more than 90 days per filter.

If you are unsure of your filters’ ratings or when they need to be replaced, call Ierna’s Heating & Cooling, 813-948-6355 or visit them on the web at www.IernaAir.com. We can provide a professional, detailed breakdown for each type of filter in your home’s HVAC system. v

1. Lawns must be mowed regularly (which means at least once a week in the sum-

mer). But keep in mind that a lawn will die if it is scalped. St. Augustine grass thrives when it grows to 6 inches tall and is cut to 4”, but Bahia grass should be kept shorter.

2. Sidewalks, curbs and driveways should be edged at least twice a month. This includes

the street side of each yard. Unless you are very good at wielding a weed whacker, only a fixed-blade edger will work.

3. Grass must be trimmed or edged along the base of the building, borders of plant beds,

and any decorative items or utility equipment in the yard.

4. For places that are tricky to trim (around pipes and mailboxes, for example),

consider putting in a well-mulched bed of low-maintenance shrubs or ornamental grass.

5. Tall grass and weeds should not be grow-ing up through shrubbery. Mulch and

edging will help protect the beds, but established grass and weeds must be pulled by hand.

6. Insects and weeds attack every lawn. Luckily, they can be controlled with easy-

to-apply chemicals – but only if the infestations don’t go too far. Regular irrigation, a few ap-plications of fertilizer, selective weed killers and occasional insecticide really work.

7. Resodding or plugging is the only alterna-tive when a homeowner loses a battle with

lawn pests. Dead grass and bare patches are unacceptable in a neighborhood as nice as yours.

8. Occasional shots of herbicide are necessary to keep grass and weeds from growing in

cracks in sidewalks, driveways, curbs and the street.

9. Shrubs should be trimmed as needed. But remember that different shrubs have

different needs.

10. The county restricts the number of days a yard can be watered. But the

ordinance still gives everyone enough time for sprinklers to do their job. Each resident must figure out how much irrigation time is needed to keep things green without wasting water.

11. Don’t blow or rake grass clippings into the street. They just wash into the

ponds, where they will promote algae blooms. Clippings should go back onto the lawn to decompose and feed the turf instead.

12. Low-hanging branches of trees should be trimmed to provide at least

eight feet of clearance over the sidewalk and 12 feet over the road.

13. Small trees will grow out, as well as up, if you let them. Trees need

discipline. You can teach them to grow tall by pruning all the branches that are within reach.

14. Straps and stakes must be removed from all sturdy trees. Straps will

strangle a tree.

15. Trash cans, recycling bins and bags of yard waste don’t add to curb ap-

peal. They must be kept out of sight except on pickup days. The garage is the best place for trash cans and recycling bins. If you must keep your trash cans outside, however, please have the courtesy to hide them – and your yard waste – behind shrubbery or fencing.

16. Water softeners, pool pumps and other items of outside equipment are

unsightly. Homeowners must plant shrubs or other tall foliage to hide the equipment from view from the street and adjacent lots.

17.Garage doors should be open only when people or vehicles are going in

and out.

18.Call the Pasco County Extension Service – 996-7341, Ext. 4288 – for

advice on yard care.

about forty animal rights activists attended a Pasco County Commissioners’

meeting last month and urged that Animal Services go “no-kill.” Could the Pasco shelter become a no-kill facility?

The sheer number of animals arriving each day makes the proposal problematic. According to guidelines from animal care researchers, the shelter should have about 120 animals. It normally houses over 150. With just a dozen strays and owner turn-ins processed daily, it would double its

capacity every ten days.

Between rescue organizations and people looking for pets, not enough animals go out the front door to prevent the shelter from being overwhelmed within a month. Apart from the problem of caring for so many animals, overcrowding leads to epidemics. An outbreak of distemper in 2008 resulted in the entire facility closing and scores of animals dying that may have found homes.

What a shelter can do is try to

Pasco County Commissioners to study a “No-Kill” Policy for

Pasco Animal servicesby Jeff Lipkes

reduce the number of animals being brought in and increase the number of adoptions. The Pasco facility is working on both. A program is now in place offering neutering and spaying at very reduced rates to low-income families. It also neuters and releases feral cats. Another affiliated organization brings pet food to indigent and disabled seniors and transports dogs and cats to and from clinics. The education co-ordinator visits schools to promote responsible pet ownership.

To help increase adoptions, a new state-of-the-art Adoption Center was opened last year. Prospective owners can take animals out of their cages and play with them. Staff have begun bringing shelter animals to off-site locations for adoption at least once a month. Members of rescue groups are sent pictures every day of animals not selected for adoption by the public. And

volunteers walk the dogs and play with the cats to reduce the stress of life behind bars and to make the animals more adoptable.

Over the past year, the shelter has increased its live release rate from about 20% to 55%. But that means that 45% are still being euthanized. “A dog is the only thing on earth,” wrote Josh Billings, “that loves you more than you love yourself.”

If you’re thinking about adding a dog or a cat into your family, consider coming by the Adoption Center, 19640 Dogpatch Lane, Land O’Lakes. If you already have an animal that’s not neutered or spayed, consider having the procedure done. For information on getting a voucher, check spaypasco.com. v

On July 7th, Shoes At The Door Modern Dance Company

presented their third season perfor-mance, Echoes, at USF’s Theatre 1. The performance used gestural nar-ratives, athletic movements and mul-timedia to explore themes of echoes present in all our lives. Echoes re-ceived positive feedback from audi-ence members who remarked that it was “a Great Show,” “Fabulous!” and called the company “a wonderfully talented group.”

Among the dancers on stage that night was Meadow Pointe 1 resident Danielle Boe. In addition to being

one of the company’s dancers and choreographers, Mrs. Boe is also a founder and director. Addition-ally, Mrs. Boe’s husband Jeff Boe volunteers as the dance company’s technical director and lighting designer. Meeting while attending USF’s School of Theatre and Dance, Jeff and Danielle were married in 2009 and moved to Meadow Pointe in 2010.

Shoes At The Door was founded by USF Dance Alumni Erica Lessner, Danielle Boe and Brooke Willis in an effort to help expand the profes-sional modern dance community in

Tampa Bay. In addition to present-ing work on stage, the company of-fers advanced modern dance classes which are open to the community. The company is affiliated with the USF School of Theatre and Dance, and provides dance therapy classes to patients of the USF Parkinson’s Center.

Starting a new dance company during a time when already lim-ited funding for the arts has been reduced even further has been a challenge, but all of the company’s members are passionate about dance and its ability to enrich the Tampa

Bay community. As a 501(c)3 orga-nization, Shoes At The Door relies heavily on contributions from their donors and is hopeful that they will experience increased support from community as they develop further as artists and collaborators.

Danielle and Jeff  both donate hours of their time each month to the company and enjoy the opportunity not only to work together but to give back to their community through the development of the arts.  For in-formation about Shoes At The Door visit www.ShoesAtTheDoor.org .
