Hello Classmates!

Page 2: Mead Hs 1964 40th From Gerry Carlson

We had a great time at our 40th Reunion, didn't we? Especially once we all got over the shock that our high school graduation really was 40 years ago!!! The tour of our "old" high school was so much fun! For those of you who weren't able to take the tour, the building still looks the same inside – just some different colors of paint. It was like stepping back in time! When we were inside the gym, you could hear the cheers and noise of our basketball games! And, perhaps, our saddest day when our Assistant Principal, Mr. Dively told us that our President, John F. Kennedy had been assassinated. Our evening at the Swinging Doors was almost too great of a success. We planned for about 25-30 and far exceeded that! We had a chance to see many classmates who were unable to attend our Saturday night doings and had a lot of fun catching up on the last 40 years with everyone. The big dinner on Saturday evening at Templins was a lot of fun, too. We talked and talked some more and enjoyed the photo displays with new and old pictures. And I must not forget our Classmate Memorial, a bittersweet reminder that life is short – we will miss them all. A big thanks to our Master of Ceremonies, Dale McBeth and to everyone who put in their $.02 worth when he passed the mike around. I can't thank the 40th Reunion Committee enough for all their hard work – we had such a short time to get organized and plan the events. We are all so excited about future events that we decided to keep the Reunion Committee active, so if you're interested, we'd love to have you join anytime! Hope to see you this August 2005 at the Mead All-Years Reunion. If you can't make that, we'll see you at our 60th Birthday Party in 2006! Paula Olmstead Wittstruck, Memory Book Editor

________________________________________________ Don Barnett P.O. Box 635; Dayton, OR 97114; phone: 503-868-7803 I live in Dayton, OR and work as a truck mechanic and my wife, Nella, is the manager of a vitamin store. We have 4 children. Dragoon Rd; Colbert, WA 99005; phone: 509-432-8599; e-mail: [email protected] My wife of 33 years, Bobbi, taught in the Mead School District for 25 years, serving as President of the Mead Education Association for the last 7 and is now retired. Our daughter, Michelle (also a Mead graduate) played varsity volleyball and softball for Mead and softball for 4 years in college. I graduated from Whitworth College in 1968 and taught Art at Ephrata Jr. High until 1972, when I was hired at the "new" Mead High School. I started programs in Pottery, Batik, Leather, and Jewelry (silversmithing) to expand Art opportunities for students and coached baseball and softball at different times – combining two disciplines that I enjoyed, art and sports. I taught long enough to have as students, children of my classmates as well as children of the students I had early in my career! Always a sports enthusiast, I have participated in all the Bloomsday Runs – there are only about 125 of the original runners left now. And I am still a car guy and still have one of my "Riverside Cruising Cars". We built a log house on 6 acres on Dragoon Creek and have spent about 20 years or so establishing a wildlife habitat. I retired from the Mead School District in the spring of 2003 after 35 years in education, but just couldn't quite give up teaching entirely, so am an adjunct instructor at Whitworth College teaching Jewelry in the Art Department. My favorite memories of high school are playing Baseball and "Cruisin' Riverside." I tell my students that I got to live "American Graffiti" and "Happy Days." What would I like to do in the future? I hope to visit Machu Pichu in Peru and climb the Inca Trail while I'm still in good enough physical condition to do so. Kathy Bloom Millick 16925 N. Kathy serves as our reunion committee treasurer, a "natural" since she is an accountant for the city of Liberty Lake. She wasn't able to attend our Reunion Dinner as she fell and knocked her knee replacement out of place – and broke a bone or two, had a surgery and was out of commission for over two months. She told us at our last meeting that she 'had a screw loose' and her husband had offered to use his cordless screwdriver to tighten it up, but her Dr. declined his offer! Kathy is just as personable and friendly as she was in high school and I am so glad that I have gotten re-acquainted with her. Diane Bourcy Pritt 1019 108th Ave NE #115; Bellevue, WA 98004; phone: 206-227-3600; e-mail: [email protected] Marilou Bradley Bier 505 N. Willow; Ellensburg, WA 98926 Marilou has been 'throwing pots' since 1974 and now specializes in Huckleberry designs. You can see her work at Pottery Place Plus, 621 W. Mallon in Spokane, or view her work on the web at: www.potteryplaceplus.com, or just "Google": Marilou Bier.

Gerald "Gerry" Carlson 4501 Holmes, Kansas City, MO 64110; phone: 816-960-1805; e-mail: [email protected] Okay, so what became of me after leaving Mead? Start with a B.S. in Biochemistry at W.S.U., where I met Susan Anderson from White Salmon, Washington in English on our first day of classes and married her following our junior year (37 years now); Peace Corps together in Brazil; worked together as lab techs at W.S.U. (son Michael Christian born 1970); Ph.D's together in biochemistry (me) and nutrition (Susan) at Iowa State University; Postdocs together at the University of Wisconsin (daughter Sara Jayne born 1977); and then faculty positions together at the University of South Florida, followed by the University of Mississippi Medical Center, followed by the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, followed by the University of Missouri-Kansas City, followed by the Kansas University Medical Center where I am chairman of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Clearly, I can't seem to hold a job! Our free time revolves around food, wine, music (Kansas City is a good jazz town), art, conversation, old movies, friends and family, especially grandchildren. Regrets? You betcha. Retirement? Haven't given it much thought. Tomorrow? Hope so! Jerry Cerenzia 16010 E. Longfellow; Spokane, WA 99218; e-mail: [email protected] Richard Cerenzia 1210 E. Brierwood Dr.; Spokane, WA 99218; phone: 509-467-0473 I am married to Cheryle and have two children, Cara and Adam and a granddaughter, Alyson Leonoy. I was a teacher, Vice Principal at Medical Lake High School, Principal at Medical Lake Middle School and am now retired. My favorite memories of high school are sports, Homecoming and rebuilding the outhouses!! Terry Christopherson 2318 E. Empire; Spokane, WA 99207; phone: 509-489-7283 Roger Cool P.O. After high school graduation, I went into active duty as a Hospital Corpsman in the Navy. My active duty areas were Class A Corpsman School in Adam, Alaska and then the aircraft carrier, Bonhomie Richard. I was honorably discharged in 1966. I worked for Boeing, then got into the commercial construction trade as a carpenter, working on commercial structures in the Seattle area. My son, Jerry, born in 1969 and his wife, Soozie have a two-year-old daughter, Shelby. Gay and I were married in 1979 and have been living in the Renton area. My interests over the years are fishing, RC airplanes, ATV flat track racing and woodworking. I had the thrill of a lifetime five years ago at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway when I drove a NASCAR at a top speed of 154 mph! I retired from the Carpenter's Union in November 2003. Gay retired from teaching in 2001. We try to live everyday as if it's a Saturday! Ralph Cram P.O. Box 178; Lake Havasu City, AZ 86405-0178; phone: 928-854-2295; e-mail: [email protected] I am a retired police officer, now living in Lake Havasu City, AZ. I'm married and have one daughter and a grandchild. After high school, I went active service in the Navy and served two cruises to Vietnam. Bill (W.F) Cunningham 14215 E. Black Road; Chattaroy, WA 99003; phone: 509-238-0555 Donna Dahl Pickering 22010 N. Chronicle Lane; Chattaroy, WA 99003; phone: 509-238-6389; e-mail: [email protected] Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined when I left Spokane nearly 40 years ago what would happen. In 1957, as the Class of '64, we were in the beginnings of junior high and America's endeavor with the Russians, "the race for space". America answered the Russian challenge with our satellite called "Explorer." We, too, became explorers to pursue our dreams and challenges. We took challenges that life presented to us and we succeeded. I consider myself very fortunate. I completed college, had a job I enjoyed, was married to my beloved Bill for nearly 37 years and raised 3 children. My father-in-law was the Director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and during my life in California, I had the pleasure of meeting astronauts, civic dignitaries, and TV and Radio personalities. I was privileged to see some of the first photos of the distant stellar worlds that I had gazed upon from my backyard in Spokane so many years ago. In 2002, Bill and I decided that living was more important than money and the hectic pressures of the California lifestyle. We sought the quiet solitude of Spokane. Many of you are experiencing that now, the new goal and endeavor, retirement! It is wonderful. Ours was short lived as my Bill passed away in March 2004. His death was not on our list and so now I have a new challenge, a bit different but basically the same as our early years, set our goals and achieve them. I can now watch my children and grandchildren set their goals and work towards the rewards that life offers. My eldest son, Erik, is an officer in the Coast guard. He is married to Sandra and they have 2 boys, Charles (age 9) and Gregory (age 7). They live in the Chicago area. My other son, Matthew, lives here in Chattaroy and will perhaps pursue a job as a mechanic for NASCAR. Daughter, Rachel, also lives in Chattaroy and is studying to be an interpreter of American Sign Language. I keep busy with cross-stitch and I possess an amateur radio (ham) license. My newest endeavor is learning to quilt. In the beginning I thought it strange to buy perfectly good fabric and cut it into pieces only to sew it back together! Another pleasure for me was working on the Reunion Committee for the Class of '64's 40th Reunion. It was a wonderful and rewarding experience and lifted my spirits as I remembered being in the classroom with some of those same people working on various classroom projects! I am thankful to finally be "home." I also 'thank you', my classmates for your many prayers, understanding and help during this difficult period in my life. Remember to tell your loved ones every day how much you love them, don't go away angry, and always give an extra hug! I love you all and pray to God for His continued care for you and your families. I also pray that He will help you succeed in new endeavors you pursue. My favorite memory of high school is catching the frogs that got loose in biology class while the other girls just screamed!! See you at the 60th Birthday Party! Cindy Dahlgren Hello to all my classmates! I am doing fine and enjoying life. Have a great reunion! Mike Davey 7711 N. Audubon; Spokane, WA 99208; e-mail: [email protected] Annette Davis Taylor 610 N. Perkins; Colfax, WA 99111; phone: 509-397-3012 Where have the last 40 years gone? If there is to be such a thing, I wish to nominate myself for the 'Ho-hum, How humdrum!' award. I've lived in the same town, on the same street, in the same house for 33 years. The best part, however, is that I have the same dearly beloved husband of 38 years still at my side. We have retired from our meat packing business, but find ourselves as busy as ever since most of our 5 children and soon-to-be 8 grandchildren live nearby. We have so much for which to be thankful! Best wishes to all. Hope to see you in 5 years! Connie Davis Vermillion 4620 N. Evergreen; Spokane, WA 99216; phone: 509-928-8862

Steve Davis 12113 N. Whitehouse; Spokane, WA 99218; phone: 509-238-4417; e-mail: [email protected] In 1964 I started working for Kaiser Aluminum. In 1965 my Uncle Sam wanted me to work for him in this place called Vietnam. I was assigned to fighter squadron VF-194. We even went for a long ride on an aircraft carrier for several months. This big boat was call the Bon Homme Richard (affectionately "The Bonnie dick"0. In 1970 I met the love of my life, Sandy, and we were married in Egypt (Washington) in 1972. That same year I left Kaiser and joined the Spokane Fire Department – in the footsteps of my brother, father, and grandfather. Our daughters, Becky and Mandy, were born in 1975 and 1977 respectively. We have spent the last few years traveling, snowmobiling, boating & camping, playing with the twin grandchildren (born in 2001) and now looking at retirement very soon. Kathy Decker Gregory P.O. I am a widow and have 1 daughter. Since retiring, I am doing some traveling. My favorite memories of high school are games, events, dances, and parties. Roger Durheim 1216 W. Woodside Place; Spokane, WA 99208; phone: 509-326-5810 Can't be, has it been 40 years? This year Donna and I will celebrate 36 years of marriage. We have two children, a daughter and a son, and two grandchildren, a granddaughter (13) and grandson (16). Our favorite time is spent with family and their ball games and events. We enjoy our RV and spend as many weekends out camping as possible. Looking at the last reunion picture there still was a lot of hair, now hair is just a memory – for me anyway. I guess that is what happens to most with age. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the reunion. Diane Edelin Swan 3927 E. Fairview; Spokane, WA 99217; phone: 509-326-3511; e-mail: [email protected] I have been a self-employed contractor for the last 20 years, owning and operating Swan Specialty Painting. My son, George, who is retired from the Navy, works with me. My son, Bob, is a Police Officer with the Airway Heights Police Department. I have three little granddaughters, Tiffany, Shelby, Maggie. I love my family and friends, my Rottweiler, Rebel, riding Harleys, and going to Vegas. Leslie Elberson 1227 Four Mile Road; Viola, ID 83872; phone: 208-882-3956 Leslie is currently at WSU. Cheryl Erickson Carpenter 7104 E. Second Ave; Spokane, WA 99212; phone: 509-922-5897; e-mail: [email protected] Rod Fay P.O. We have lived in Wenatchee for almost 29 years. Our "children" are our two German Longhair Pointer hunting dogs, Eika and Freya. Jim is an avid bird hunter and spends his weekends during hunting season hunting chukars and pheasants. He has to keep his "girls" happy! Jim is owner of Littrell and Associates CPA firm. I have worked for the Washington State Department of Corrections for 28 years. I'm currently the Regional Administrator for the Southeast Region. I have responsibility for the three prisons located in this region,

the Washington State Penitentiary, Coyote Ridge Corrections Center, Ahtanum View Assisted Living Facility; two work releases and 12 community corrections field offices located from Wenatchee to the north, Walla Walla to the east, Goldendale to the west and the Tri-Cities to the south. We recently retired from the Mission Ridge Ski Patrol after 22 years. We continue to ski when we can find the time. In the summers, our major recreation is cruising the Pacific Northwest waters into Canada in our 44-foot powerboat, "Sumptin Special", which we keep permanently moored in LaConner. Dan Forsyth 17410 N. Little Spokane Dr.; Colbert, WA 99005; phone: 509-466-7637 Dan owns a printing business, D'n'R Printing, in Mead. Thank you for printing our 2004 Christmas Card! You did a great job! Tom Fox 16407 E. Rich Avenue; Spokane, WA 99216; phone: 509-928-1655 Patty Glodt Herres P.O. Box 862; Leavenworth, WA 98826-0862; phone: 509-548-8059 First of all I want to thank the reunion committee for taking the time to find me and sending an invitation to the reunion. But as you probably have figured out by now, I will not be coming. It's just too hard for me to think about coming without Jim, even though he has been gone for eight years. He was such a part of my high school life and other reunions. Maybe I'll be able to come to the next one. How can it be our 40th reunion? I know I'm not that old! But then my kids are 34, 32, and 30 and I have 4 grandchildren ranging in age from 1 month to 8 months old (2 boys, 2 girls). After Jim died, I bought a house in the country, outside Leavenworth. We had several horses, and I still have horses, but younger ones. The history of my horses is a long story, too. Anyway, I live on 3 acres and maintain an area for the horses and a big yard. In my spare time I work. Or is that the other way around! I've had four different jobs since leaving high school. Actually went to work after my kids were in their teens. Now am working for Keyhole Security, an alarm and locksmith company. As with any job, life is not always rosy, and I ended up suing one of my employers. Never in my life did I think I would sue someone, always thought it was wrong and best just to walk away, but when you are the victim and deal with the harassment it makes you look at things differently. Not a fun time in my life. Life happens to us, and we just have to go on, which is what I'm doing and taking each day as it comes. Some good, some not so good. Hello to my classmates and if you are ever in Leavenworth, look me up. I always have the coffeepot on and my cell phone is never far from my side (509-679-1715). And take a moment to remember Jim. He was a very special man. Carl Graham 4705 E. Handy; Colbert, WA 99005-9643; phone: 509-483-2900; e-mail: [email protected] I am married to Janey, have 2 children and am self-employed. Carol Guthrie Curtis 7303 N. Crestline #3; Spokane, WA 99207; phone: 509-467-6896 Bonne Hansen Ahrens 507 Princeton Lane, Cheney, WA 99004; phone: 509-559-5838; e-mail: [email protected] I attended two years of Junior College and am currently a Level A Pharmacy Tech at Safeway, where I have worked for 19 years. Ken and I have been married for 37 years. We have two children. Our daughter, Stephanie, currently single, graduated from WSU with a Masters Degree and is an ARNP living Moses Lake. Our son, Kasey, who is married to Jessica, also graduated from WSU with a Masters Degree. He teaches the 6th grade in Kelso and coaches football at the Junior High level and JV basketball. Ken has retired due to health problems, but I am still going strong. I enjoy shopping, reading, antiquing, decorating and spending time with family, friends, my cats and horses. My favorite memories of high school are selling carnival tickets, Pep Club and drama class. I am most proud of both my children getting Masters degrees from WSU and keeping my promise to Kathy Carroll on the night she died four years ago to look after her Mom, June. I see June at least twice a week and spend holidays with her and my family.

Gayla Hart Riordan 617 W. Barnes Rd.; Spokane, WA 99218; phone: 509-466-2575; e-mail: [email protected] After high school, I attended Kelsey Baird Secretarial School and have worked for School District 81, Van Camp Seafood (Terminal Island, CA), Sperry Univac Defense Systems Division (Eagan, MN), 8 years at the Western Farmer Stockman Magazine (Cowles Publishing, Spokane), and The Principle Financial Group (Spokane). Currently I am happily employed at Spokane Machinery Company as a secretary. I have worked in computerized drafting, advertising layout & sales and as a secretary. I have two sons from my first marriage, Brian and Kevin and 2 grandchildren, Kaleigh (11) and Gabe (5) who live in Minnesota. I am now happily married to Ron and have several stepchildren and umpteen step-grandchildren. I enjoy reading, crocheting, knitting, working jigsaw puzzles, love plants and gardening and someday hope to have a greenhouse. Ron and I enjoy riding bicycles, hiking, walking my dog, Torree (a beautiful Sheltie), flying in small airplanes (my husband in the pilot), visiting with family and friends and attending concerts and plays. We golf, or at least Ron does and I just hit the ball everywhere, but where I want it to go. And, of course, we like to eat. We enjoy traveling, have been to Belize twice and are planning a cruise in February 2005. I am looking forward to retirement and plan to spend the first year traveling all over the U.S. Also plan to take different classes such as painting, yoga, ceramics, photography. Also plan to get involved in volunteer work. You know, all the things there just isn't time to do while you are working full time. We have a monogramming business in a shop in our backyard with our embroidery machine, 2 heat presses and a Press-A-Print and I plan to get more involved after retirement when I can devote more time to it. Our sons and their families live and run the company in those locations and my husband and I do a lot of traveling to and from all those places. My husband and two of our sons have pilot licenses and enjoyed flying the 210 Cesna, which we just sold last year. We enjoy our family and grandchildren. Traveling and business have kept us very busy. Maybe someday we will actually retire and stay home! My favorite memories of high school are friends and slumber parties. Jay Holberg 6801 N. Dave Johnson 18414 Halliday Road; Mead, WA 99021; phone: 509-238-4784 e-mail: [email protected] After graduating from Mead, I attended SCC and then Eastern. I got a BA (History) from Eastern in '69. Shortly thereafter I went on active duty in the Navy Reserves. I served for one year in Kodiak, Alaska and then about 9 months on a guided Missile Destroyer, the Towers. I did two week cruises on a couple of Destroyer Escorts and another Destroyer and went to Mexico, Hawaii, Taiwan, Guam, California and all over Alaska as a part of my Navy experience – overall the Navy was very good to me!!! I returned to EWU for a year and earned another BA (Social Sciences) and then went to work as a Counselor at Naselle Youth Camp – a State institution for Court-committed delinquent boys. I worked there for about 2 ½ years before accepting a job at the Spokane County Juvenile Court in the Detention Center. I worked in a variety of supervisory roles in Detention and Probation for 26 years until about 4 years ago when I retired – a very enjoyable career! My wife, Sharon, and I have been married for about 23 years. She brought 3 stepchildren into my life and they have added 4 grandchildren (so far) and some great in-laws. All live quite close to us and we get together frequently. Sharon continues to work part-time and we both tinker around our small farm – we've raised a variety of critters over the years and currently we have a few sheep and I cut some hay and Sharon raises some flowers. We also do a fair amount of camping and I love to ride motorcycles (both trail and road). I do cross-country skiing and a bit of snowshoeing in the winter. Over the years, I've done some interesting traveling – I spent a month in Norway with my Dad and visited his birthplace and our many relatives there. I went through the British Isles, floated through the Grand Canyon and spend a lot of time exploring Parks and Wilderness areas close to home and in Canada and Alaska. I take a lot of pictures, read a lot of books, spend a lot of time goofing off with friends and once in a awhile I do some volunteering here and there. My favorite memories of high school are running around in the evening with John Webb, Ray Mecklenburg, Carl Graham, Terry Christopherson, etc. I enjoyed Louis Anderson's Agriculture class and Mrs. Strange's English classes. I learned to fly helicopters in 1976. I've flown commercially for most of my life doing aerial photography, free fall photography, flying charters, towing gliders, dropping skydivers and now I'm learning to fly my new Honda antigravity motorcycle. I also have a business building fiberglass cargo pods for the Swiss built Pilatus Porter PC-6 turboprop aircraft. I may be in California watching Scaled Composites win the $10,000,000 X prize when the reunion happens. If so, consider the 50 bucks a donation. Ruth Kilpatrick 9005 N. I married Greg Heins on January 11, 1969 (separated since 1998…. (long story). We have 3 children, Cory, age 35, married with 4 children; Mark, age 33, married with 1 child; David, age 31, unmarried. I worked in Nursing as a Registered Nurse for the better part of 21 years, until 1990 and had a variety of positions, but most of that time was spent in ICU and CCU. I also served as Director of Education at the hospital in Moses Lake, as well as general medical-surgery nursing. Then, in 1992 I was asked to help teach at a small private Christian School in Moses Lake and with the exception of 3 years in Wenatchee, have been teaching Jr. and Sr. High math and science ever since. Other Life Changing events: I became a Christian in 1972…. walking with the Lord is a remarkable experience….. Goals: (you're never too old for goals, right?) Be a missionary, (somewhere??). My favorite memories of high school are the clubs, drill team, flag twirling, going to all the games, close friends. Alan Knott 24424 W. I have two sons, aged 32 & 34 and two grandsons (one from each son). What do I have to do to get a girl??!! I worked with large and small animals, trained horses and gave riding lessons during my working years. I retired because of health problems. There were a few rough years, but I am feeling ok now. Say hello to everyone! I hope to get to the next reunion. Vicki Lamon 3926 N. I love being near my folks and my sisters. What could possibly be better? Soooo, now I hope to run into all of you still living in Spokane at Home Depot, Lowes, you know, all the hot spots when we are all looking our best. Smile, you know that is exactly how we will meet. Thanks, Dale, you were great! After graduating from Mead, I attended Washington State University (1964-1967), San Francisco State University (1969-1970)-BA, and University of Puget Sound School of Law (1975)-JD. I have worked as a private practice attorney since 1975 and was Court Commissioner for Lewis County District Court from 1992-2002. I am a volunteer Board member for three groups, Lewis County Bar Legal Aid, a non- profit agency to provide legal assistance to less fortunate people involved in court actions, Reliable Enterprises, a non-profit to assist people with developmental disabilities in job situations, and High Noon Sertoma Club, a service organization. Ginger McIlvanie 2090 W. Chestnut Avenue; Yakima, WA 98902; phone: 509-452-3384 After graduating from Whitworth College in 1968, I began a long and rewarding educational career. Most of my professional life has been devoted to teaching seventh grade science education in the Yakima Valley, and I'm looking forward to sharing in the lives of about 135 new students this fall. Although I've worked in many capacities, three highlights were serving as the Washington Science Teacher's Convention State Chairperson twice and as Eastern Washington State Conference Chairperson once. With each conference, new challenges were presented as the face of education continues to change. The Yakima Valley has been home since 1971, and the area continues to be the most diverse agricultural county in the USA. Although the valley has changed drastically since 1971, the excitement of harvest permeates the valley each autumn. I've enjoyed my home and garden, and love to share it with guests. During my spare time, I fish, photograph, hike, swim, and read. I've had the opportunity to travel in several parts of the world. As always, I return home grateful for the experience, and equally blessed to be a citizen of the USA. I am currently teaching middle school. Thank you soooo much for all your efforts! I sincerely appreciate all your incredible hours! After graduating from high school, I went to WSU and received a civil engineering degree in the winter of 1969. I was fortunate to get a job with the Seattle Engineering Dept. and worked for them until December of 1973. In January of 1974, I started my career with the City of Boise as an engineer. When I started, Boise had a population of about 75,000 people and about 150 miles of sewers (my specialty!!). I would say that I was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time to be employed by the City of Boise. I was appointed City Engineer in April of 1975 as the previous city engineer retired after 37 years with the city. Boise has grown to a community of over 200,000 since I started and we now have over 600 miles of sewers!! In the spring of 2003, I was appointed to the position of Director of Public Works for the city. Boise has been a great place to work (nearly 31 years), to raise a family and Idaho is a great state for all of our recreational pursuits. I was married to Pat Stalcup in the summer of 1973 in Olympia, Washington. She is also a WSU graduate although we did not know each other in college. We have a son Craig who is a conservation officer for Idaho Fish and Game and is stationed in the Riggins area. We have a daughter Shelley who is a mechanical engineer and lives in Boise. Both Craig and Shelley went to the University of Idaho so we have two Cougars and two Vandals in the family. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the reunion this year because of our annual elk hunting/camping trip. This year it was just a camping trip (no elk) but it was my group’s 30th year going to the same place in Idaho. We have also been fortunate to be able to whitewater raft on the Idaho and Oregon rivers since the early 1980’s. That has

Page 18: Mead Hs 1964 40th From Gerry Carlson

been one of our primary recreational endeavors. What does the future hold for the Mickelsons? A couple of years ago, Pat and I bought 25 acres of land on the Snake River just across the Oregon border. The property is about an hour from Boise and has a half mile of frontage on the river. When and if I retire or am retired by the city administration, we plan to build a home and live in Oregon, raise a few animals and return to the rural life style. Sorry that we were not able to attend the 40th but maybe we will make it to the 50th! Ray Miller 3917 E. Beverly Rd; Mead, WA 99021; phone: 509-466-3187 Vicki Miner Wolverton 15018 N. Edencrest Drive; Spokane, WA 99208-9794; phone: 509-467-0152; e-mail: [email protected] I'm so glad we're having a 40-Year Class Reunion! Here are my "40 Years of Highlights". My first full-time job (1965-1967) was as secretary to the Alumni & Placement Director at Whitworth College. Should have stayed there-would have earned free tuition for our children-but at 21 years of age who's planning that far ahead? From 1967 to 1968 I worked as secretary to the District Manager for Operator Services (Pacific Northwest Bell then). In 1969 I had the wonderful opportunity to represent the City of Spokane as its' official hostess – "Miss Spokane"! An incredible year of over 120 official appearances, meeting ordinary folks all the way to ambassadors from foreign countries. One highlight was traveling to Sacramento for their Camellia Festival, which included a luncheon, where I was seated at the head table with Nancy Reagan and almost got to meet then Governor Ronald Reagan! On July 30, 1972 I had a "blind date" with a man who proposed marriage two weeks later. We were officially engaged August 16th and married on November 4, 1972. (And still are!) In January 1980 our son, Brian, was born. He attended K-12 in the Mead School District and, being 6'8" (barefoot) started playing basketball in the 5th grade. George Chalich told me once he would have loved to have had Brian play for him. Brian went on to graduate from EWU, is presently working for the Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railroad as a conductor and not married. We bought our first home in April 1981, which was completely destroyed by fire September 5, 2003. Although we lost EVERYTHING (the pictures and mementos are the worst), we are safe and are in the process of rebuilding. We adopted our daughter, Lisa in July 1981. She also attended K-12 at Mead and loves sports. In the 6th grade she was the fastest girl runner out of ALL the elementary schools in the District. She played softball (could throw a ball from centerfield to home plate effortlessly), basketball and participated in some track events. Her senior year, the girl's basketball team went to State and placed third. Lisa is presently working at Lumberman's, is not married, and plans to enlist in the Navy. In 1997 I had the wonderful opportunity to travel with seven other ladies and do a "walking tour" of Rome, Paris, and London. Yes, we walked! Other than the plane flights and "tube" trains, we only took one city bus and we rode the Eurostar train from Paris to London @ 170 mph. In 1998, we searched for and found my husband's daughter who had been put up for adoption in 1959. We have a great relationship with her, as well as her adoptive parents. I'm even a grandmother – have a 17-yr. old grandson and 13-yr. old granddaughter! We owned and operated Zip's Drive In at 725 E. Francis from 1997-1999, sold that, but still manage our 70 mini-storage units and 5 other commercial properties. We have traveled since 1999, taken trips along the northern tier of the US, four of the Atlantic Provinces of Canada, central US, lower US, and a trip to Florida to see the launch of the space shuttle Atlantis at Kennedy Space Center on Oct. 5, 2002. We spend Feb-Apr in Salton Sea, CA, Yuma, AZ and take lots of side trips. There are so many Spokane people in Yuma that there is an All Spokane High School Class Reunion potluck. 2004 there were about 250 attending, with a few more than 125 who were graduates – even 6 from Mead who were from 1959 and earlier – the only one I knew was Bobby Ross. I have very fond memories of Mead. I enjoyed school, the friends I made, the simpler time we lived in during the 60's with very little of the pressures our children faced. In ending, I would just like to say, "Enjoy each day for what it brings (hopefully it begins with God), treasure the time spent with your loved ones, learn and grow from every situation. Life is fragile-handle it with prayer!"

On Valentine's Day 2005 I married a wonderful man, Art Franson. My hobbies are 4-Wheeling and Jeeping. I bought a retirement home at Deer Lake right across from Skip Wells. I've enjoyed working on previous Class Reunions and am looking forward to our 60th birthday party. Gene Neihart 44307 N. I loved working on the 40th Reunion Committee and getting a chance to get to know everyone all over again. I am married to Walt and we have between us 5 living children, our son Will and (Walt's) four girls, Lauren, Melissa, Tammi and Jennifer. There are 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren and one granddoggy, Mikita. As I tell everyone, I married my College Professor! He is still my mentor as well as my husband and best friend. We have a great life filled with love and laughter. After high school I enlisted in the Navy and loved it. Boot camp was on the East Coast, what a culture shock for me! The girls in the barracks thought I was a model because I was so dressed up (hat, suit, gloves, all red, white, & blue)! I took tests and was qualified to go to Electronics Technician Class "A" School, something I would have never chosen on my own! After Boot Camp, I went to ET School at Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Illinois. After graduation I was assigned to my permanent duty station in Newport, RI. When I left the Navy, I was an ETN2, (E-5 or 2nd class). I have two Associates Degrees from Spokane Community College, the first an AAS in Data Processing and the second, an AA in Liberal Arts. The first degree was to get a job; the second was to enhance my personal enjoyment of life. I worked as a Computer Programmer/Analyst for various DP shops (as we used to call them) in Spokane before an unplanned retirement about 25 years ago when our son, Will, had a serious bicycle accident and nearly died. I decided to stay home for the summer, so quit my job, planning to hit the bricks to look for work when Will went back to school. I received a job offer from Hewlett-Packard, then the primo employer in the area, but the thought of being on call and making that drive to Liberty Lake at 3 a.m. by myself wasn't very appealing, so I stayed home and learned to bake bread! My favorite hobby, besides handwork like cross-stitch, knitting and crocheting, is genealogy. I love doing the research and have had at least two really big AH HA moments – discovering something that no one else had found. The computer continues to be a big part of our life - it is much more than a connection to the internet. My favorite memory of high school is everything. I loved school. I loved math, especially algebra and my science classes, well except for dissecting those frogs in Mr. James biology class! I am so grateful for typing class and still use some shorthand

symbols I learned from Mrs. Slind. I liked all my teachers, but remember with special fondness Mrs. Nordby and C.K. I loved being Sr. Class Treasurer, a flag twirler, marching in the Lilac Parade, the Carnival, selling raffle tickets, football and basketball games, doing photography with Jan Knorre for the annual our sophomore and junior years, being in the different clubs, and my friends. Terri Opsal Carrier 14015 N. Rivilla Lane; Spokane, WA 99208; phone: 509-468-3931; e-mail: [email protected] My husband, John and I raised 3 sons and a daughter and FINALLY have our first grandchild. We are head over heels in love with Casey. I worked for Bayer Corporation for 21 years as an assistant to the Medical Director and also for the Director of Sales. I decided I needed a change and went to work as an Executive Assistant for the owner of XN Technologies, Inc. in Cheney. I have been there for the last 5 years. My husband retired from Bayer Corporation several years ago. John and I like to travel when we can and get to San Diego, CA and Sun Valley, ID at least once a year to visit our sons who live there. I like to cook, garden, read, knit and have been known to snow ski when forced into going! I prefer warm, sandy beaches. I am really looking forward to retirement in about 3 ½ years – even though that makes me OLD (but I'm not alone). I graduated from the University of Wisconsin law school in 1972. I had a brief one-year stint in Navy flight school between my first and second semesters of law school. Luckily I got an "early out" from the Navy so I could complete my law studies. My wife, Lynita, and I were married in 1972. My first law job was with the State Attorney General's office in Seattle for two years. I then went into private practice with a firm in downtown Seattle, Grutz, Scott, Kinney & Fjelstad, where I have been since 1974. Lynita and I have lived on Queen Anne Hill in Seattle for the last thirty years. We've been at our current address since 1985. It's a very old house (circa 1910) and we are still trying to renovate it. I have a 30-year-old son, Alex, who is a Vail ski instructor, carpenter and world-traveler, a daughter, Rachel, who is 27, a lawyer, a younger son, Andrew, age 24, who works in residential remodeling, and a Welsh Corgi named Sophie, age 8 who enjoys eating, sleeping, and occasionally biting. None of my kids are married and we have no grandchildren, though we have temporary custody of our grandcat, Carina, who tore a hole in Rachel's new leather sofas. In my spare time, I enjoy racquetball, traveling, poker, cribbage, crossword puzzles, Husky football, Seahawks, Sonics, Mariners, skiing, movies, bird hunting, occasional golf, snorkeling, going to our cabin on Stretch Island, boating and entertaining. Tim Seim 1117 Lake Mount Blvd.; Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada T1K 3S4; e-mail: [email protected] I married my High School girlfriend, Lynn Taylor, Shadle Class of '65. We went to California to attend Biola University and then on to Seminary at Talbot School of Theology. We moved to Canada in 1971 to begin our career in the Pastoral ministry with a small Christian church denomination, the Evangelical Free Church. We have served the Lord with them for 34 years in Canada. I am now supervising 36 churches rather than pastoring a single church and that keeps life on the move. Lynn and I have four daughters, all married and gone from home now, living all over the world...North Carolina, Oregon, Canada, and Scotland. We have 12 grandchildren as of June and that is one of our great joys in life as we travel to spend time with them. We have also had the great opportunity to travel into most parts of the world with our ministry and preach Christ and encourage other Christian workers. It has been great and I cannot believe that 40 years have gone by since our grad from Mead! I'm still an economics professor at University of California Santa Barbara. My wife, Ann, has retired, but I'm going strong. I have 500 students this quarter in my introductory economics course! Isn't that about 4 times as many students as there were in our graduating class? I'm also involved with the Public Policy Institute of California, located in San Francisco. I lived in San Francisco recently for a few years and still do some commuting between there and Santa Barbara. My best to everyone.

Mark Warfield 3203 40th Street West; Billings, MT 59106; phone: 406-656-5208; e-mail: [email protected] After spending 3 years at Mead Jr. High and only 6 weeks at Mead High, my family moved to Bozeman, Montana where I finished high school. Moving in the middle of the year proved difficult and my sister, Carolynne, and I always longed to be back in Spokane and at Mead. Within a year, Carolynne married Gary Gossett and moved back to Spokane. I spent quite a bit of time during my high school summers at her house and some time at Brian Scott's house. In Bozeman, living close to the university, I immediately became a huge fan of the Montana State University Bobcats. I thoroughly enjoyed my 4 years of college there, received a BS degree, and was very active in my fraternity and in student government. After graduation, I drove a Coke truck for a year, then continued my education at the University of Montana in Missoula. In 1972, I graduated with a BS 5-yr. pharmacy degree and finally had a profession where I could earn a living. It has proved to be the perfect match for me. While interning as a pharmacist at St. Johns Hospital in Helena, MT, I met Mary Claire Haffey, RN. I looked forward to being at her table during coffee breaks and lunch, because she was so funny and was always talking, therefore I didn't have to say anything. The Director of Nursing invited us to dinner at her house and Mary Claire and I have been together ever since. She is the best nurse I've ever seen and the best thing that ever happened to me. In 1973, St. Johns Hospital closed and we moved to Billings, MT. I began working at St. Vincent Hospital and have been here for 31 years, the last 7 as a night pharmacist. Mary Claire has worked for an OB-GYN practitioner for the last 15 years. The greatest joys in my life have been my kids, who have completely amazed me and are not a bit like me. My daughter, Molly, loved performing and took Tap and Jazz for 13 years, was a majorette and twirler in high school, as well as being in drama and writing on the school paper. She graduated from the U of Montana in broadcast journalism and from Gonzaga Law School. She works in Spokane as an attorney for the Washington State Attorney General's Office. My son, Kris, always intensely competitive, played high school basketball and legion baseball in Billings. He graduated from the U of Montana with a double major in sociology and psychology. He earned his masters in Social Work and works as a therapist for Arizona Children's Association in Phoenix, AZ. We are more than thrilled with our granddaughter, Elizabeth Claire "Ellie" Parish, who just turned 1 year old and lives in Spokane. My favorite memories of high school are playing on a football team where the seniors and other players were so good, that a lowly sophomore like me could only play late in a varsity game and bus trips listening to the upper-class talk about girlfriends and dates. Things I missed, but wished I could have been there for: (1) Although I rode around in Chas. Rice's hotrod one summer, wished I could have been there to ride to school with him each day as he promised we would in Jr. High and (2) although I read about it and heard about it, I wish I could have witnessed my friend Brian Scott's success in football and my friend Jerry Carlson's success in basketball. Brian and I started out in 7th grade on the football team with no chance of ever getting into a game. Jerry and I were cut from the basketball team, much to our amazement in the 7th and 8th grade. Skip Wells 7923 N. Colton; Spokane, WA 99218; phone: 509-467-8955; e-mail: [email protected] I am single, with a college + education. I have worked for the Whitworth Water Works and the Fire Department. I am semi-retired, working as a consultant. My favorite memories of high school are 'all of it'. Gloria Wilks Gander 9714 N. Ivanhoe; Spokane, WA 99218; phone: 509-468-2331 My husband Wayne, who is retired from the military, and I are enjoying the retired life. I keep busy with hobbies like scrapbooking and helping out my Mom, who lives nearby. My favorite memories of high school are slumber parties and my friends! ________________________________________________
