46 éme Grand Chapitre d’Italie • FLORENCE April 3rd - 6th 2014

I’ fui nato e cresciuto sovra’l bel fiume d’Arno a la gran villa. (D.C. Inferno Canto XXIII)I was born and grew up in the great town on the fair river of Arno. (D.C. Inferno Canto XXIII)Dante referred to Firenze as “The Great Town”; it was a

large and popular City in the Middle Ages, so it remains today.

If, as the grammar books teach us, a certain number of adjectives can be

attributed to one noun, for Florence all those meaning beauty, art, music, poetry and history are not enough. In fact coming to Florence, we enter in the Heaven of art, with the astonishing view of all its monuments. The viewing of the Cathedral with its superb Dome by Brunelleschi and the Giotto’s bell tower, the Baptistery with Ghiberti’s doors is breath-taking as well as the beautiful Piazza della Signoria with the Loggia dei Lanzi -an outdoor art gallery- and Palazzo Vecchio with its Salone dei Cinquecento. And how could we not mention the Uffizi gallery, one of the most beautiful museums in the world? And Santa Croce, where the remains of those who made Italy great can be found, all the other churches full of treasures and, finally, all the beautiful palaces and gardens. Let’s think to the city’s sons, who made it unique: Dante, Giotto, Machiavelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo, Cellini, Vasari, Ghiberti, Brunelleschi and the Della Robbia. This is Firenze, amazingly beautiful, surrounded by great green hills covered with olive trees and cypresses. However the whole of Tuscany is a wonderful and fecund region, able to offer excellent food and wines. Once satisfied our souls with such and many marvelous, let’s fill our wine glass for a toast to this unique city in the world, that welcome us with open arms. Image for one moment to relive the magnificence of the sumptuous banquets, and to sit at the Medici’s table; the Lords of Florence weren’t second to anybody, both for luxury and refinement! I thank those who hardly worked to organize this unforget-table meeting and I wish you all an exciting stay.

I have been living in Florence for eight years, due to professional reasons. In these eight years this unique city, this beacon of civilization throughout the world, captured me and definitely won me over. Florence is the city where many

modern industries (textiles, etc.) were born, along with

fashion, modern finance, painting, sculpture, architecture, literature and

the Italian language. Also gastronomy has its origin in Florence (in fact the French began their tradition only after Catherine and Maria de’ Medici moved their chefs from Florence to the royal court of France), the same goes for cosmetics. Even the modern football game was born in Florence and finally the Americas were discovered by a Florentine. Art permeates this wonderful and amazing city.I faced the task of organizing the Grand Chapitre 2014 with fear, for such a great responsibility, but the city is enthusias-tically encouraging me day by day. During the four days of the Chapitre, the most important monuments and artworks of Florence will be at our disposal: Palazzo Medici Riccardi, Uffizi Gallery, Vasari Corridor, San Lorenzo Basilica and cloister, Palazzo Vecchio and its Salone dei 500, the Medici Villa La Petraia and even more, and of course Tuscan food and wine, carefully selected. My dear consoeurs and dear confrères, you will certainly come back to Florence many times, but for sure you will not be able to enjoy as much as it will be offered in this Chapitre. I am and I will always be in dept to this city for the joys and beauties received, and if I succeed in conveying to you a small part of my feelings I will consider my debt to be alleviated a little. I especially want to thank our confrère Francesco Bechi (the President of Florentine Hotels Association) without whose help it wouldn’t have been possible to plan such a program. Welcome!

FLORENCE AND ITS LANDS

There are a thousand reasons to visit Florence, there are millions to come back.Everybody comes here with his own baggage of expectations and dreams, all leave with a feeling of appreciation and gratitude.Between the myriad different faces of Florence, we have decided to show a more unusual one, far from the traditional tourist destinations, representing the very essence of the city, in order to rediscover the origins of Renaissance in Florence through places and vicissitudes of the family whose name will always be indissolubly linked to the fate of the city: the Medici Family. Passing the villas, palaces and churches of the “ Renaissance Magnates ”, we will enter Florence, to capture aspects and feelings away from large crowds. The common denominator of this back in time trip will be the reason that, finally, lead us here: the cookery, learnedly interpreted by generous hands, through products, receipts and uses typically Medicean. Remember that modern cookery was born right here, thanks to the passion of one of the greatest queens of France, Caterina de’ Medici. Thanks to her it crossed the borders beyond the Alps and spread with success throughout France. In fact Caterina, not satisfied with the cookery of the court of France, brought the best Tuscan chefs to Paris. It was she who divided salty foods from sweet ones and brought the fork to the French tables. The same fork leads us here, where everything began...

The beating heart of the city, seat of the political power of the Medici Family, will be the setting of the suggestive Induction Ceremony. Palazzo Vecchio, strictly linked to the destiny of the Medici Family, better than any other site in Florence represents the essence of a rich and prosperous past. The room called “Salone dei 500”, with its Vasari’s frescoes and the famous statue called “Genio della Vittoria” by Michelangelo, at the time was the biggest hall ever built in Italy for the management of the civil power.

Palazzo Strozzi is one of the most beautiful Renaissance palaces in Italy, so imposing that at least 15 existing buildings were destroyed to make room for it. Considered a masterpiece of the Florentine civil architecture, it was the residence of the Strozzi Family which was traditionally opposed to the Medici faction. After lunch we will get the opportunity to visit the exhibition hosted in the Palazzo, about the Florentine mannerism whose main protagonists were Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino.

La Petraia is one of the most attractive Medici country villas for its panoramic position overlooking the city of Florence, its fine pictorial decoration and for the beauty of its garden and park. Aperitif will be served in the wonderful Sala Rossa and in the Terrace from which you will have an unforgettable view of the villa’s garden and of the sunset over Florence. The Gala Dinner will take place in the ballroom frescoed by Cosimo Daddi and Volterrano in the sixteenth century.Harry’s Bar Firenze, a Chaîne des Rotisseurs member, will prepare the dinner bringing in this wonderful location the hospitality, the elegance and the quality food that are indissolubly linked to its name for 60 years. Every dish is the result of a careful processing, joining at the same time history, evolving tradition and local food excellences. From ten centuries the Castle overlooks the valleys which surround it.From 1114 the Castle is owned by the Ricasoli family, whose name is particularly tangled with the history of the famous wine, the Chianti Classico. In fact it was a member of the Ricasoli family, Bettino, who first created the ideal formula for the Chianti wine. He mixed three different varieties of grape, and the proportions that he determined have been used to produce the Chianti d.o.c. (controlled designation of origin) until 1967.The tour includes first a visit to the wine cellar, then to the most ancient halls of the castle where a small family museum is located and where a private collection of weapons is on display.Lunch will be served in the Tavern of the Castle, where the Chef Franco Sangiacomo will prepare traditional meals combined with a careful selection of wines. In the afternoon the bus will head back to Florence through the wonderful villages of Gaiole and Greve in Chianti.
