T he Mississippi Delta is known as the Birthplace of the Blues and has been referred to as the “cradle of American civilization.” The birth of the Blues reverberated around the world and lead to the birth of jazz, country, rhythm and blues and, of course, rock and roll. All of these genres were inspired by the music of the cotton fields of the Mississippi Delta. Your journey along U.S. Highway 61, America’s Blues Highway, will be like no other as you search for the roots of American music. Set back and relax and see where the backroads take in the Mississippi Delta. The Mississippi Blues Trail is prominent throughout the Mississippi. Start your backroads adventure in DeSoto County at the grave of Memphis Minnie and end at Catfish Row in Vicksburg. Make a stop at the Gateway to the Blues Museum in Tunica and then head on down to Clarksdale to visit the Delta Blues Museum, Red’s Lounge and Ground Zero Blues Club. Next jump on Highway 49 and head to Greenwood to visit the graves of Robert Johnson. Be sure to stop in at Back in the Day Museum and Awesome AM Radio 960AM. Continue on Highway 49 to Yazoo County and check out the Blue Front Café for some authentic Bentonia Blues. You will want to make a stop by the Sam Olden Yazoo Historical Society Museum. Now it is time to head to Indianola to pay homage to the King of the Delta Blues at the B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center. Our next stop is the Mississippi Grammy Museum in Cleveland and a visit to the birthplace of it all: Dockery Plantation. If you are in the area on Thursday then Po’ Monkey’s juke house in Merigold should be top on your list. It’s time to head over to Leland to visit the Highway 61 Blues Museum. You’ll find live Blues music in Greenville’s entertainment district along Walnut Street. Heading down Highway 61 to Vicksburg you can visit the Muddy Waters Cabin in Rolling Fork. Vicksburg offers live Blues music at LD’s Kitchen on Tuesdays and at Ameristar Bottleneck Blues Bar on the weekends. “The Delta begins in the lobby of the Peabody Hotel in Memphis and ends at Catfish Row in Vicksburg.” ~ David Cohn, God Shakes Creation Mississippi Delta Ultimate Blues Trip /VisitTheDelta #MississippiDelta www.visitthedelta.com MDTA.ProfileSheets_Layout 1 7/19/16 10:13 PM Page 5
